Definition
Īśvara is the personal God in Hindu philosophy — Brahman with attributes (saguna Brahman). While Brahman is the impersonal Absolute beyond all description, Īśvara is the divine with form, qualities, and agency — the creator, preserver, and destroyer of the universe. In different traditions, Īśvara is identified as Vishnu, Shiva, Shakti, or other deities. In Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, Īśvara is a special purusha (consciousness), untouched by ignorance and karma, who serves as the object of meditation (īśvara-praṇidhāna). In Advaita Vedanta, Īśvara is Brahman associated with maya — the efficient and material cause of the universe. Upon liberation, the distinction between Ātman and Īśvara dissolves into pure Brahman.
Etymology
From the root īś (ईश्), "to own, possess, rule, control." Īśvara means "the Lord, the ruler, the master" — the one who possesses and governs all.
