The 18-chapter song of divine wisdom on the battlefield of life
oṁ pārthāya pratibodhitāṁ bhagavatā nārāyaṇena svayaṁ vyāsena grathitāṁ purāṇamuninā madhyemahābhāratam | advaitāmṛtavarṣiṇīṁ bhagavatīmaṣṭādaśādhyāyinīmamba tvāmanusandadhāmi bhagavadgīte bhavadveṣiṇīm ||
“Om, O Bhagavad Gita, with which Partha was enlightened by the Lord Himself, which Vyasa recorded in the midst of Mahabharata, mother of eighteen chapters showering the nectar of Advaita, upon thee I meditate.”
आरम्भो ज्ञानस्य दीपः — Every journey begins with a quiet breath of inquiry.
Philosophical Objective & Scope
The Bhagavad Gita is not an invitation to violence, but an allegorical and practical manual on overcoming moral paralysis (Visada). Spoken at the knife-edge between two armies, it demonstrates how transcendental wisdom directly empowers decisive, compassionate duty in the world.
Scholarly Lineage & Canonical Context
Occurring in the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata. Classical commentators like Adi Shankara, Ramanuja, and Madhvacharya divided the 18 chapters into three hexads (Shatkas) corresponding to the Mahavakya "Tat Tvam Asi".
