इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे धन्वन्तरिसंभवादिवर्णनं नाम सप्तषष्टितमो ऽध्यायः ॥ ६७॥ ऋषय ऊचुः मरुतेन कथं कन्या राज्ञे दत्ता महात्मना ।किंवीर्याश्च महात्मानो जाता मरुतकन्यया

iti śrībrahmāṇḍe mahāpurāṇe vāyuprokte madhyamabhāge tṛtīya upoddhātapāde dhanvantarisaṃbhavādivarṇanaṃ nāma saptaṣaṣṭitamo 'dhyāyaḥ // 67// ṛṣaya ūcuḥ marutena kathaṃ kanyā rājñe dattā mahātmanā / kiṃvīryāśca mahātmāno jātā marutakanyayā

हिन्दी अर्थ

नास्तिकान्पापशीलांश्च वृयेव प्राणिहिसकान्

English

That lord of subjects desirous of cooked food, per- formed the sacrifice Marutsoma. That king of great splendour performed it every month for sixty years.

अध्याय १०६

श्लोक 2

सूत उवाच आहरत्स मरुत्सोममन्नकामः प्रजेश्वरः ।मासिमासि महातेजाः षष्टिसंवत्सरान्नृप

sūta uvāca āharatsa marutsomamannakāmaḥ prajeśvaraḥ / māsimāsi mahātejāḥ ṣaṣṭisaṃvatsarānnṛpa

हिन्दी अर्थ

स्त्री द्विशंल्लोकविद्विषन्पाषंडानां हि पालिनः । कालसूत्रे रौरवे च कुम्मोपाके च कुम्भ

English

The gods, Maruts, were pleased by the sacrifice Marut- soma of that king. Delighted in their heart, they give never- failing cooked food with all the other articles he should desire.

श्लोक 3

तेन ते मरुतस्तस्य मरुत्सोमेन तोषिताः ।अक्षय्यान्नं ददुः प्रीताः सर्वकामपरिच्छदम्

tena te marutastasya marutsomena toṣitāḥ / akṣayyānnaṃ daduḥ prītāḥ sarvakāmaparicchadam

हिन्दी अर्थ

एवमादिषु कष्टेषु नरकेषु घटोदुभव । पातयत्याज्ञया तस्याः श्रीदेव्या: स महौजसः

VV. 1-6 speak of Maruta and Mitra-Jyoti. But these have no connection with any dynasty in this chapter.

अन्नं तस्य सकृद्भुक्तमहोरात्रं न क्षीयते ।कोटिशो दीय मानं च सूर्यस्योदयनादपि

annaṃ tasya sakṛdbhuktamahorātraṃ na kṣīyate / koṭiśo dīya mānaṃ ca sūryasyodayanādapi

राक्षसं लोकमाश्रित्य वतंते ललिताचंकः

मित्रज्योतेस्तु कन्याया मरितस्य च धीमतः ।तस्माज्जाता महासत्त्वा धर्मज्ञा मोक्षदर्शिनः

mitrajyotestu kanyāyā maritasya ca dhīmataḥ / tasmājjātā mahāsattvā dharmajñā mokṣadarśinaḥ

To the daughter of Mitra-jyoti and the intelligent Maruta were bom many sons who were conversant with dharma, could realize salvation and who were endowed with great intrinsic strength.

श्लोक 6

संन्यस्य गृहधर्माणि वैराग्यं समुपस्थिताः ।यतिधर्ममवाप्येह ब्रह्मभूयाय ते गताः

saṃnyasya gṛhadharmāṇi vairāgyaṃ samupasthitāḥ / yatidharmamavāpyeha brahmabhūyāya te gatāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

धारण करने वाले गुह थ्रो देवी के समय को नियमित किया करते हैं

English

They renounced the rites and vows pertaining to the householder and adopted Vairdgya (non-attachment to worldly desires or objects). After taking up the duties of recluses they attained salvation.

श्लोक 7

अनेनसः सुतो जातः क्षत्रधर्मः प्रतापवान् ।क्षत्रधर्मसुतो जातः प्रतिपक्षो महातपाः

anenasaḥ suto jātaḥ kṣatradharmaḥ pratāpavān / kṣatradharmasuto jātaḥ pratipakṣo mahātapāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

जो गुहु के द्वारा शप्त हैँ-दुराचारी हैं--ललिता के साथ दष करने वाले हैं--कृटभक्ति में तत्पर हैं--मूर्ख हैँ -स्तब्ध हैं और बहुत ही अधिक दपं बाले हैं--मन्ध चोर हैं-कुत्सित मन्त बाले हैं-कूबिद्या के पाप का संय करने वाले हैं-नास्तिक हैं--पाप कर्मों के करने वाले हैं उनको भिन्न-भिन्न

English

Sffijaya, the son of Pratipaksa, became well-known. Jaya was the son of Srfijaya. Vijaya was born to him.

श्लोक 8

प्रतिपक्षसुतश्चापि सृंजयो नाम विश्रुतः ।सृंजयस्य जयः पुत्रो विजयस्तस्य जज्ञिवान्

pratipakṣasutaścāpi sṛṃjayo nāma viśrutaḥ / sṛṃjayasya jayaḥ putro vijayastasya jajñivān

हिन्दी अर्थ

नरकों में डाल दिया जाता है । उन नरकों के नाम ये हैं-कालसूत्र-रौरव- कुम्भीपाक-बह महान ओज वाला उसी खी देवी को आज्ञा से है घटोदुभव ! इन नरकों में डाल दिया करता है ।५८-६२! उसके हो पश्चिम भाग में खड्ग का धारण करने वाला निति है। वह भी खरो ललिता का अर्चक

This dynasty of Anenas (also given in V&. 7-11 and Brahma 27-31) was limited and could not be properly located. Bh.P.IX. 17 gives a different line of Anenas.

विजयस्य जयः पुत्रस्तस्य हर्यश्वकः स्मृतः ।इर्यश्वस्य सुतो राजा सहदेवः प्रतापवान्

vijayasya jayaḥ putrastasya haryaśvakaḥ smṛtaḥ / iryaśvasya suto rājā sahadevaḥ pratāpavān

हिन्दी अर्थ

राक्षस लोक का आस्रय ग्रहण करके रहा करते हैं

English

Yati adopted the path of salvation. He became a sage and became one with Brahman. Among the other five*, it was Yayati who became king.

अध्याय १०६

श्लोक 10

सहदेवस्य धर्मात्मा अहीन इति विश्रुतः ।अहीनस्य चयत्सेनस्तस्य पुत्रो ऽथ संकृतिः

sahadevasya dharmātmā ahīna iti viśrutaḥ / ahīnasya cayatsenastasya putro 'tha saṃkṛtiḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

वारुणं लोकमाश्रित्य वरुणे वतंते सदा

English

He got Devayani, the daughter of U£anas, and Sarmistha the Asura lady and daughter of Vr$aparvan, as his wives.

श्लोक 11

संकृतेरपि धर्मात्मा कृतधर्मा महायशाः ।इत्येते क्षत्रधर्माणो नहुषस्य निबोधत

saṃkṛterapi dharmātmā kṛtadharmā mahāyaśāḥ / ityete kṣatradharmāṇo nahuṣasya nibodhata

हिन्दी अर्थ

सदा श्रीदेवतामंत्रजापी श्रीक्रमसाधकः

English

With that pre-eminent chariot* he constantly con- quered the different kingdoms on the earth. Yayati was invin- cible in battle to the Devas* Danavas and human beings.

श्लोक 12

नहुषस्य तु दायादाः षडिन्द्रोपमतेजसः ।यतिर्ययातिः संयातिरायतिर्वियतिः कृतिः

nahuṣasya tu dāyādāḥ ṣaḍindropamatejasaḥ / yatiryayātiḥ saṃyātirāyatirviyatiḥ kṛtiḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

४७६ ब्रह्माण्ड पुराण

English

Abandoned (Banished) by the citizens and people of the outlying districts* that king Lohagandhi ran about here and there. He did not get happiness or mental peace anywhere.

श्लोक 13

यतिर्ज्येष्ठस्तु तेषां वै ययातिस्तु ततो ऽवरः ।काकुत्स्थकन्यां गां नाम लेभे पत्नीं यतिस्तदा

yatirjyeṣṭhastu teṣāṃ vai yayātistu tato 'varaḥ / kākutsthakanyāṃ gāṃ nāma lebhe patnīṃ yatistadā

हिन्दी अर्थ

श्रीदेवतादर्शनस्य द्वेषिण: पाशवस्त्रने: ।

English

Distressed with sorrow and misery as he was, he did not get sympathetic understanding from anyone anywhere. Utterly dejected he sought refuge in the sage Saunaka.

श्लोक 14

स यतिर्मोक्षमास्थाय ब्रह्मभूतो ऽभवन्मुनिः ।तेषां मध्ये तु पञ्चानां ययातिः पृथिवीपतिः

sa yatirmokṣamāsthāya brahmabhūto 'bhavanmuniḥ / teṣāṃ madhye tu pañcānāṃ yayātiḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

तस्य चोत्तरकोणेषु वायुलोको महाद्युतिः ।

English

That saintly king Yayaii, the son of Nahusa, attain- ed old age. He then spoke these words to Yadu, his eldest and the most excellent son.

अध्याय १०६

श्लोक 15

देवयानीमुशनसः सुतां भार्यामवाप ह ।शर्मिष्ठामासुरीं चैव तनयां वृषपर्वणः

devayānīmuśanasaḥ sutāṃ bhāryāmavāpa ha / śarmiṣṭhāmāsurīṃ caiva tanayāṃ vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

उसके उत्तर भाग में दोनों के मध्य स्थल में वारुण लोक का आश्रके लेकर सदा वरुण देवता रहा करता है ।६४। यह वारुणी के अस्वादन में मत्त रहता है । इसका परमशुध्र है और वृष इसका वाहन है। यह भी श्रीदेवी के मन्त्र के जप करने वाला है और खरो के क्रम की साधन करने वाला है

यदुं च तुर्वसुं चैव देवयानो व्यजायत ।द्रुह्युं चानुं च पूरुं च शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी

yaduṃ ca turvasuṃ caiva devayāno vyajāyata / druhyuṃ cānuṃ ca pūruṃ ca śarmiṣṭhā vārṣaparvaṇī

हिन्दी अर्थ

।६५। जो भी ल्ली देवता से द्वेष करने बाले हैं उनको पाशों के बन्धनों से बांधकर भक्तों के बन्धन को छुड़ाने वाला यह अधो मार्ग में पहुँचा दिया करता है ।६६। और उसके उत्तर कोने में महती द्य ति वाला बायुलोक है। वहाँ पर वागु के हो शरीरों वाले तया स्वेदा आनन्द से पूणं महोदय सिद्धः

English

O Yadu, accept my sin along with my old age. Accept my old age."

अध्याय १०६

श्लोक 17

अजीजनन्महावीर्यान्सुतान्देवसुतोपमान् ।रथं तस्मै ददौ शक्रः प्रीतः परमभास्वरम्

ajījananmahāvīryānsutāndevasutopamān / rathaṃ tasmai dadau śakraḥ prītaḥ paramabhāsvaram

हिन्दी अर्थ

गण और दिव्य ऋषिगण तथा दूसरे पवन के अभ्यास वाले--गो की रक्षा मैं प्रधान-योग में परायण योगी रहा करते हैं और इन्हीं के साथ महान सत्व वाला ख्रीमास्तेश्वर निवास करते हैं । इनकी मूति सर्वथा भिन्न है

On being told thus by Yadu, he became extremely furious. (The king) who was the most excellent among the elo- quent ones spoke to the eldest son after censuring him.

अध्याय १०६

श्लोक 18

असंगं काञ्चनं दिव्यमक्षयौ च महेषुधी ।युक्तं मनोजवैरश्वैर्येन कन्यां समुद्वहत्

asaṃgaṃ kāñcanaṃ divyamakṣayau ca maheṣudhī / yuktaṃ manojavairaśvairyena kanyāṃ samudvahat

हिन्दी अर्थ

हे कुम्भ-सम्भव ! इडा-पिङ्गला और सुषुम्णा इसकी शक्तियां हैं। ये तीन शक्तियाँ मरुतनाथ की सवंदा मधु के मद से अलस रहा करती हैं

English

"O evil-minded one, what other devout rite do you have for which you disregard me, your preceptor (and father)? What other Asrama (stage of life) can you have?'*

अध्याय १०६

श्लोक 19

स तेन रथमुख्येन जिगाय सततं महीम् ।ययातिर्युधि दुर्द्धर्षो देवदानवमानवैः

sa tena rathamukhyena jigāya satataṃ mahīm / yayātiryudhi durddharṣo devadānavamānavaiḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

तेन सत्त्वेन कल्पांन्ते त्रेलोक्यं सचराचरम् ।

English

"An old man cannot drive a chariot or ride a horse. He cannot enjoy women. He has no pleasure. Therefore, I do not desire old age".

अध्याय १०६

श्लोक 20

पौरवाणां नृपाणां च सर्वेषां सो ऽभवद्रथी ।यावत्सुदेशप्रभवः कौरवो जनमेजयः

pauravāṇāṃ nṛpāṇāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ so 'bhavadrathī / yāvatsudeśaprabhavaḥ kauravo janamejayaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

पुष्पराग अकारादि नुक्ताकार वर्णन ४७७

English

"An old man is as weak and feeble as a child. He is always unclean. He does not perform Homa in the sacred fire at the proper time. I do not like that type of old age."

अध्याय १०६

श्लोक 21

कुरोः पौत्रस्य राज्ञरतु राज्ञः पारीक्षितस्य ह ।जगाम सरथो नाशं शापाद्गार्ग्यस्य धीमतः

kuroḥ pautrasya rājñaratu rājñaḥ pārīkṣitasya ha / jagāma saratho nāśaṃ śāpādgārgyasya dhīmataḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

तस्लोकपूबंभागस्ये यक्षलोके महादय ति: ।

English

He delighted his wives by means of all favours desired by them. He made excellent Brahmanas pleased by granting them everything they desired. He pleased guests by means of foodstuffs and beverages and the Vaisyas (the merchant class) by according them benign administration.

अध्याय १०६

श्लोक 22

गार्ग्यस्य हि सुतं बालं स राजा जनमेजयः ।दुर्बुद्धिर्हिंसया मास लोहगन्धी नराधिपः

gārgyasya hi sutaṃ bālaṃ sa rājā janamejayaḥ / durbuddhirhiṃsayā māsa lohagandhī narādhipaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

निश्विभिश्च नवाकारंऋ द्विवृद्ध यादिशक्तिभिः।

English

He delighted Sudras by avoiding cruelty and pre- venting their harassment by others. He controlled decoits by giving punishments and restraining them otherwise. He delighted all subjects duly according to the injunctions of dharma.

अध्याय १०६

श्लोक 23

स लोहगन्धी राजर्षिः परिधावन्नितस्ततः ।पौरजानपदैस्त्यक्तो न लेभे शर्म कर्हिचित्

sa lohagandhī rājarṣiḥ paridhāvannitastataḥ / paurajānapadaistyakto na lebhe śarma karhicit

हिन्दी अर्थ

वह मास्तेश्वर श्रेष्ठ सिह के बाहुन पर विराजमान हैं--हाथ में धवजा लिए हुए हैं और ललिता देवो के यजन-ध्यान ओर अचेन के क्रम में परायण रहते हैं ।७१। आनन्द से पूरित अङ्गों वालो अन्य शक्तियों से समा वृत रहते हैं। बह श्रोमात मरुतेश्‍्वर सदा चक्रिणी का जाप किया करते

अध्याय १०६

श्लोक 24

ततः स दुःखसंतप्तो नालभत्संविदं क्वचित ।स प्रायाच्छौनकमृषिं शरणं व्यथितस्तदा

tataḥ sa duḥkhasaṃtapto nālabhatsaṃvidaṃ kvacita / sa prāyācchaunakamṛṣiṃ śaraṇaṃ vyathitastadā

हिन्दी अर्थ

हैं ।७२। उसी के सत्व से चराचर प्रलोकय को कल्प के अन्त में परागमयता को प्राप्त करके उसो क्षण में निनो दित किया करते हँ ।७३। उसी सत्व की सिद्धि के लिए उसो ललितेशवरी की भावना तथा अचंना करते हुए समस्त आभरणो से भूषित हैँ ।७४। उस लोक के पूर्व भाग में यक्षलोक है उसमें

You may take up the administration of the realm. Indeed, you alone among all the sons carried out my wish in order to please me." King Yayati, the son of Nahusa took back his old age. Puru regained his youthful age.

श्लोक 25

इन्द्रोतोनाम विख्यातो यो ऽसौ मुनि रुदारधीः ।योजयामास चैन्द्रोतः शौनको जनमेजयम्

indrotonāma vikhyāto yo 'sau muni rudāradhīḥ / yojayāmāsa caindrotaḥ śaunako janamejayam

महान कान्ति सम्पन्न यक्षराज निवास किया करते हैं। यह श्री सम्पन्न हैं और उसके द्वारों के मध्य में स्थित हैं ।७५। निधियों के द्वारा जो नो हैं तथा ऋद्धि, वृद्धि आदि शक्तियों के द्वारा ललिता के भक्तों को धन सम्पदा से पूति किया करते हैं ।७६। अनुकूल प्रवृत्ति वाली परम सुन्दरी पत्नियों के

श्लोक 26

अश्वमेधेन राजानं पावनार्थं द्विजोत्तमाः ।स लोहगन्धो व्यनशत्त स्यावभृथमेत्य ह

aśvamedhena rājānaṃ pāvanārthaṃ dvijottamāḥ / sa lohagandho vyanaśatta syāvabhṛthametya ha

हिन्दी अर्थ

सहित अनेक प्रकार के मधु के भेदों से उसी चक्रिणी देबी की सविधि पूजा किया करते हैं

स वै दिव्यो रथस्तस्माद्वसोश्चेदिपतेस्तथा ।दत्तः शक्रेन तुष्टेन लेभे तस्माद्बृहद्रथः

sa vai divyo rathastasmādvasoścedipatestathā / dattaḥ śakrena tuṣṭena lebhe tasmādbṛhadrathaḥ

इत्येवमादयो यक्षसेनान्यस्तत्र सस्ति वे

English

VV.90-94 show that despite the disobedience of his sons Yayati gave parts of his kingdom to his sons, thougn the hereditary throne was given to the youngest son Puru.

श्लोक 28

ततो हत्वा जरासंधं भीमस्तं रथमुत्तमम् ।प्रददौ वासुदेवाय प्रीत्या कौरवनन्दनः

tato hatvā jarāsaṃdhaṃ bhīmastaṃ rathamuttamam / pradadau vāsudevāya prītyā kauravanandanaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

तल्लोकपू वं भागे तु रुद्रलोको महोदयः ।

English

The king established the eldest son Yadu in the South-Western quarter. He assigned the Western quarter ta Druhyu and the northern quarter to Anu.

श्लोक 29

स जरां प्राप्य राजर्षिर्ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः ।पुत्रं श्रेष्टं वरिष्ठं च यदुमित्यब्रवीद्वचः

sa jarāṃ prāpya rājarṣiryayātirnahuṣātmajaḥ / putraṃ śreṣṭaṃ variṣṭhaṃ ca yadumityabravīdvacaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

अनध्येरत्नखचितस्तत्र रुद्रोऽधिदेवता ।

English

After conquering the Earth consisting "of seven oceans and continents, King Yayati, the son of Nahusa, divided it into five divisions and distributed them among his sons.

अध्याय १०६

श्लोक 30

जरावली च मां तात पलितानि च पर्ययुः ।काव्यस्योशनसः शापान्न च तृप्तो ऽस्मि यौवने

jarāvalī ca māṃ tāta palitāni ca paryayuḥ / kāvyasyośanasaḥ śāpānna ca tṛpto 'smi yauvane

हिन्दी अर्थ

सहैब मन्युना दीप्तः सदा वद्धमहेबुधिः ।

English

The entire Earth consisting of towns and seven continents is being protected by them righteously without encroaching on other territories as they were conversant with Dharma.

त्वं यदो प्रतिपद्यस्व पाप्मानं जरया सह ।जरां मे प्रतिगृह्णीष्व तं यदुः प्रत्युवाच ह

tvaṃ yado pratipadyasva pāpmānaṃ jarayā saha / jarāṃ me pratigṛhṇīṣva taṃ yaduḥ pratyuvāca ha

After dividing the Earth among his sons and after transferring the royal glory to his sons, the king, the son of Nahu$a, became delighted.

श्लोक 32

अनिर्दिष्टा हि मे भिक्षा ब्राह्मणस्य प्रतिश्रुता ।सा तु व्यायामसाध्या वै न ग्रहीष्यामि ते जराम्

anirdiṣṭā hi me bhikṣā brāhmaṇasya pratiśrutā / sā tu vyāyāmasādhyā vai na grahīṣyāmi te jarām

हिन्दी अर्थ

स्वसमाने मंहासत्वैरलोकनिर्वाहदक्षिणेः

English

After laying aside the bow and the arrows, after entrusting the kingdom to his sons and after allotting the duties and responsibilities to his kinsmen, the king became pleased.

अध्याय १०६

श्लोक 33

जरायां बहवो दोषाः पानभोजनकारिताः ।तस्माज्जरां न ते राजन्ग्रहीतुमहमुत्सहे

jarāyāṃ bahavo doṣāḥ pānabhojanakāritāḥ / tasmājjarāṃ na te rājangrahītumahamutsahe

हिन्दी अर्थ

अधिज्यकामु केदक्षे: पोडशावरणस्थितैः ।

English

In this context the following verses have been formerly sung by Yayati, the great king. By following the advice therein one should restrain and withdraw lustful desires like a tortoise that withdraws his limbs.1

अध्याय १०६

श्लोक 34

सितश्मश्रुधरो दीनो जरया शिथिलीकृतः ।वलीसंततगात्रश्च निराशो दुर्बलाकृतिः

sitaśmaśrudharo dīno jarayā śithilīkṛtaḥ / valīsaṃtatagātraśca nirāśo durbalākṛtiḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

आवृतः सततं वकत्रेर्जपञ्छोदेवतामनुम्

English

"Never can lust subside by enjoying the pleasures. Just as the fire is ablaze all the more by ghee offer- ings so also the desires get increased by indulgence.

श्लोक 35

अशक्तः कार्यकरणे परिबूतस्तु यौवने ।सहोपवीतिभिश्चैव तां जरां नाभिकामये

पालयित्वा व्रतं चार्षं तत्रैव स्वर्ग माप्तवान् ।तस्य वंशास्तु पञ्चैते पुण्या देवर्षिसत्कृताः

pālayitvā vrataṃ cārṣaṃ tatraiva svarga māptavān / tasya vaṃśāstu pañcaite puṇyā devarṣisatkṛtāḥ

चरूथी--विल्मी--कवची-श्रुत--सेन--दुम्दुभी. इत्यादि रुद्र है

English

Having kept the vow of the sages, he attained heaven from that very place. His five lineages are holy and honoured by the divine sages.

श्लोक 106

यैर्व्याप्ता पृथिवी कृत्स्ना सूर्यस्येव गभस्तिभिः ।धन्यः प्रजावा नायुष्मान्कीर्त्तिमांश्च भवेन्नरः

yairvyāptā pṛthivī kṛtsnā sūryasyeva gabhastibhiḥ / dhanyaḥ prajāvā nāyuṣmānkīrttimāṃśca bhavennaraḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

चरूथी--विल्मी--कवची-श्रुत--सेन--दुम्दुभी. इत्यादि रुद्र है

English

By them the whole earth is pervaded, as by the rays of the sun. A man who hears this becomes blessed, rich in offspring, long-lived and famous.

ययातेश्चारितं सर्वं पठञ्छृण्वन्द्विजोत्तमाः
