Bhagavad Gita Foundations

Explore the 6 foundational pillars that form the philosophical spine of the Bhagavad Gita.

(Original Sanskrit)

Literal TranslationDhṛtarāṣṭra said: “O Sanjaya, what did my people and the Pāṇḍavas do, gathered together on the holy field of Kurukshetra, eager for battle?”

    Context (प्रसंग)

Dhritarashtra inquires about the battle on the field of Dharma (Kurukshetra).

    Simple Explanation (सरल अर्थ)

The setting is both historical and allegorical: every human life is an inner battlefield where duty confronts dilemma.

    Pause and Think (आत्म-चिंतन)

“What is the primary moral or practical dilemma calling for your courage right now?”

Literal TranslationYou have the right to work alone, but not to the fruits of it. Do not be driven by the results of your work, nor have attachment to inaction.

    Context (प्रसंग)

Krishna turns Arjuna from despair to decisive, detached action.

    Simple Explanation (सरल अर्थ)

Karma Yoga: Focus 100% on right action, zero on anxiety over results. Never let passivity become an excuse.

    Pause and Think (आत्म-चिंतन)

“Can you work with absolute excellence today simply for the craft itself, free from craving praise?”

(Original Sanskrit)

Krishna defines Yoga in five words: Samatvam Yoga Uchyate (Equanimity is Yoga).

    Simple Explanation (सरल अर्थ)

Poise in success and failure alike is true Yoga. When inner balance is unshakeable, outer storms lose their grip.

    Pause and Think (आत्म-चिंतन)

“Recall a recent win or loss—did it disturb your inner stillness, or could you hold it with quiet equanimity?”

Literal TranslationBetter is one's own duty, even if done poorly, than the duty of another done well. It is better to die while performing one's own duty; the duty of another is full of fear.

    Context (प्रसंग)

Arjuna asks if an easier, foreign path is preferable to his demanding duty.

    Simple Explanation (सरल अर्थ)

It is vastly better to live your own authentic calling imperfectly than to mimic someone else’s life with perfection.

    Pause and Think (आत्म-चिंतन)

“Where in your life are you currently tempted to copy others instead of walking your true lane?”

Literal TranslationWhenever there is a decline of Dharma, O Arjuna, and an uprising of Adharma, then I incarnate myself.

    Context (प्रसंग)

Krishna explains the cosmic law of moral equilibrium and the descent of divine order.

    Simple Explanation (सरल अर्थ)

Whenever righteousness wanes and chaos mounts, universal consciousness intervenes to protect the good and restore truth.

Lay down the heavy burden of doership, anxiety, and guilt. Trust in the supreme presence and grieve no more.
