अध्याय २३१
आसन्नं विप्रकृष्टं वा यदि कालं न विद्महे ततो द्वापरविध्वंसं युगान्तं स्पृहयामहे
āsannaṃ viprakṛṣṭaṃ vā yadi kālaṃ na vidmahe tato dvāparavidhvaṃsaṃ yugāntaṃ spṛhayāmahe
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
The son of the Sun-god said to the sages: "I shall kill those Raksasas, O brahmins, when I complete my penance. With the penance (as yet) incomplete I am powerless to kill them.*'
अध्याय २३१
प्राप्ता वयं हि तत् कालम् अनया धर्मतृष्णया आदद्याम परं धर्मं सुखम् अल्पेन कर्मणा
prāptā vayaṃ hi tat kālam anayā dharmatṛṣṇayā ādadyāma paraṃ dharmaṃ sukham alpena karmaṇā
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Again, the sages said: "We shall give you the benefit of our penance".
अध्याय २३१
संत्रासोद्वेगजननं युगान्तं समुपस्थितम् प्रनष्टधर्मं धर्मज्ञ निमित्तैर् वक्तुम् अर्हसि
saṃtrāsodvegajananaṃ yugāntaṃ samupasthitam pranaṣṭadharmaṃ dharmajña nimittair vaktum arhasi

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Saturn, the son of the Sun-god, approached the Raksasa in the form of a holy fig. Saturn was in the guise of a brahmin. As a brahmin he circumambulated the Raksasa.
अध्याय २३१
अरक्षितारो हर्तारो बलिभागस्य पार्थिवाः युगान्ते प्रभविष्यन्ति स्वरक्षणपरायणाः
arakṣitāro hartāro balibhāgasya pārthivāḥ yugānte prabhaviṣyanti svarakṣaṇaparāyaṇāḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
As he circumambulated the Raksasa the sinful demon thought that he was an ordinary brahmin. He therefore ate him up by his power of Maya.
अध्याय २३१
अक्षत्रियाश् च राजानो विप्राः शूद्रोपजीविनः शूद्राश् च ब्राह्मणाचारा भविष्यन्ति युगक्षये
akṣatriyāś ca rājāno viprāḥ śūdropajīvinaḥ śūdrāś ca brāhmaṇācārā bhaviṣyanti yugakṣaye
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
As usual Pippala devoured Saturn, the son of Sun-god. When Saturn-entered his body he looked at the intestines in the belly of the Raksasa.
अध्याय २३१
श्रोत्रियाः काण्डपृष्ठाश् च निष्कर्माणि हवींषि च एकपङ्क्त्याम् अशिष्यन्ति युगान्ते मुनिसत्तमाः
śrotriyāḥ kāṇḍapṛṣṭhāś ca niṣkarmāṇi havīṃṣi ca ekapaṅktyām aśiṣyanti yugānte munisattamāḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
The tasks of the people will be accomplished when they touch the holy fig tree on my day after observing all holy rites. They will not have any trouble arising from me.
अध्याय २३१
अशिष्टवन्तो ऽर्थपरा नरा मद्यामिषप्रियाः मित्रभार्यां भजिष्यन्ति युगान्ते पुरुषाधमाः
aśiṣṭavanto 'rthaparā narā madyāmiṣapriyāḥ mitrabhāryāṃ bhajiṣyanti yugānte puruṣādhamāḥ

The holy centre Somatirtha has also been mentioned by noble men. By taking a holy plunge and by distributing charitable gifts there, the benefit of drinking Soma juice can be had.
अध्याय २३१
राजवृत्तिस्थिताश् चौरा राजानश् चौरशीलिनः भृत्या ह्य् अनिर्दिष्टभुजो भविष्यन्ति युगक्षये
rājavṛttisthitāś caurā rājānaś cauraśīlinaḥ bhṛtyā hy anirdiṣṭabhujo bhaviṣyanti yugakṣaye

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Formerly, the medicinal herbs were the mothers of worlds. They are honoured by all living beings. They are also my divine mothers. They are prior to all prior ones.
अध्याय २३१
धनानि श्लाघनीयानि सतां वृत्तम् अपूजितम् अकुत्सना च पतिते भविष्यति युगक्षये
dhanāni ślāghanīyāni satāṃ vṛttam apūjitam akutsanā ca patite bhaviṣyati yugakṣaye
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
All the ailments are undoubtedly cured by them. Food comes from them and all lives are saved by them. These medicinal herbs are worthy of being honoured by the worlds but being free from egoism they spoke to me.
अध्याय २३१
प्रनष्टनासाः पुरुषा मुक्तकेशा विरूपिणः ऊनषोडशवर्षाश् च प्रसोष्यन्ति तथा स्त्रियः
pranaṣṭanāsāḥ puruṣā muktakeśā virūpiṇaḥ ūnaṣoḍaśavarṣāś ca prasoṣyanti tathā striyaḥ

O Gautamf, of meritorious waters, O beloved of Sambhu, if you had not come down to the Earth, could the people with miseries arising from their contact with different sins, have found it possible to live?
अध्याय २३१
अट्टशूला जनपदाः शिवशूलाश् चतुष्पथाः प्रमदाः केशशूलाश् च भविष्यन्ति युगक्षये
aṭṭaśūlā janapadāḥ śivaśūlāś catuṣpathāḥ pramadāḥ keśaśūlāś ca bhaviṣyanti yugakṣaye

English
Who knows the fate of persons on the Earth, O queen of rivers? O mother Ganga, you are the destroyer of their sins. You are easily accessible to them for ever.
अध्याय २३१
सर्वे ब्रह्म वदिष्यन्ति द्विजा वाजसनेयिकाः शूद्राभा वादिनश् चैव ब्राह्मणाश् चान्त्यवासिनः
sarve brahma vadiṣyanti dvijā vājasaneyikāḥ śūdrābhā vādinaś caiva brāhmaṇāś cāntyavāsinaḥ

O Ganga, worthy of being honoured by the three worlds, O mother of the worlds, does anyone understand your real greatness? Although his body is closely embraced by Gauri, lord Siva holds you on his head.
अध्याय २३१
शुक्लदन्ता जिताक्षाश् च मुण्डाः काषायवाससः शूद्रा धर्मं वदिष्यन्ति शाठ्यबुद्ध्योपजीविनः
śukladantā jitākṣāś ca muṇḍāḥ kāṣāyavāsasaḥ śūdrā dharmaṃ vadiṣyanti śāṭhyabuddhyopajīvinaḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Obeisance to you, O mother, bestower of all desired objects! Obeisance to you, O destroyer of sins, O goddess identical with Brahman! Obeisance to you, O river, rising from the lotus-like feet of Visnu! Obeisance to you, O river rising from the matted hair of Sambhu!
अध्याय २३१
श्वापदप्रचुरत्वं च गवां चैव परिक्षयः साधूनां परिवृत्तिश् च विद्याद् अन्तगते युगे
śvāpadapracuratvaṃ ca gavāṃ caiva parikṣayaḥ sādhūnāṃ parivṛttiś ca vidyād antagate yuge

English
After getting Moon as their husband, the medicinal herbs became joyous. They spoke these words liked by Ganga and the entire world.
अध्याय २३१
अन्त्या मध्ये निवत्स्यन्ति मध्याश् चान्तनिवासिनः निर्ह्रीकाश् च प्रजाः सर्वा नष्टास् तत्र युगक्षये
antyā madhye nivatsyanti madhyāś cāntanivāsinaḥ nirhrīkāś ca prajāḥ sarvā naṣṭās tatra yugakṣaye
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

O king, you redeem him who gifts us on Ganga. You are the excellent one, O lord of herbs. The mobile and immo¬ bile beings are dependent on you.

तपोयज्ञफलानां च विक्रेतारो द्विजोत्तमाः ऋतवो विपरीताश् च भविष्यन्ति युगक्षये
tapoyajñaphalānāṃ ca vikretāro dvijottamāḥ ṛtavo viparītāś ca bhaviṣyanti yugakṣaye

तथा द्विहायना दम्याः कलौ लाङ्गलधारिणः चित्रवर्षी च पर्जन्यो युगे क्षीणे भविष्यति
tathā dvihāyanā damyāḥ kalau lāṅgaladhāriṇaḥ citravarṣī ca parjanyo yuge kṣīṇe bhaviṣyati

पितृदेयानि दत्तानि भविष्यन्ति तथा सुताः न च धर्मं चरिष्यन्ति मानवा निर्गते युगे
pitṛdeyāni dattāni bhaviṣyanti tathā sutāḥ na ca dharmaṃ cariṣyanti mānavā nirgate yuge

pitṛdāyādadattāni vibhajanti tathā sutāḥ haraṇe yatnavanto 'pi lobhādibhir virodhinaḥ

सौकुमार्ये तथा रूपे रत्ने चोपक्षयं गते भविष्यन्ति युगस्यान्ते नार्यः केशैर् अलंकृताः
saukumārye tathā rūpe ratne copakṣayaṃ gate bhaviṣyanti yugasyānte nāryaḥ keśair alaṃkṛtāḥ

A holy plunge, Japa, Homa, charitable gifts, libation to the Manes and gifting of food performed there are capable of bestowing endless benefit.

निर्वीर्यस्य रतिस् तत्र गृहस्थस्य भविष्यति युगान्ते समनुप्राप्ते नान्या भार्यासमा रतिः
nirvīryasya ratis tatra gṛhasthasya bhaviṣyati yugānte samanuprāpte nānyā bhāryāsamā ratiḥ

बहुयाचनको लोको न दास्यति परस्परम् राजचौराग्निदण्डादिक्षीणः क्षयम् उपैष्यति
bahuyācanako loko na dāsyati parasparam rājacaurāgnidaṇḍādikṣīṇaḥ kṣayam upaiṣyati

aphalāni ca sasyāni taruṇā vṛddhaśīlinaḥ aśīlāḥ sukhino loke bhaviṣyanti yugakṣaye

वर्षासु परुषा वाता नीचाः शर्करवर्षिणः संदिग्धः परलोकश् च भविष्यति युगक्षये
varṣāsu paruṣā vātā nīcāḥ śarkaravarṣiṇaḥ saṃdigdhaḥ paralokaś ca bhaviṣyati yugakṣaye

Kshatriyas will live by wealth and grain like Vaishyas; as the age declines, kinsmen will no longer be kinsmen.

अप्रवृत्ताः प्रपश्यन्ति समयाः शपथास् तथा ऋणं सविनयभ्रंशं युगे क्षीणे भविष्यति
apravṛttāḥ prapaśyanti samayāḥ śapathās tathā ṛṇaṃ savinayabhraṃśaṃ yuge kṣīṇe bhaviṣyati

भविष्यत्य् अफलो हर्षः क्रोधश् च सफलो नृणाम् अजाश् चापि निरोत्स्यन्ति पयसो ऽर्थे युगक्षये
bhaviṣyaty aphalo harṣaḥ krodhaś ca saphalo nṛṇām ajāś cāpi nirotsyanti payaso 'rthe yugakṣaye

Men's joy will bear no fruit and their anger will bear fruit; at the end of the age even goats will be tethered for their milk.

अशास्त्रविहितो यज्ञ एवम् एव भविष्यति अप्रमाणं करिष्यन्ति नराः पण्डितमानिनः
aśāstravihito yajña evam eva bhaviṣyati apramāṇaṃ kariṣyanti narāḥ paṇḍitamāninaḥ

śāstroktasyāpravaktāro bhaviṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ sarvaḥ sarvaṃ vijānāti vṛddhān anupasevya vai

No doubt they will not teach what the scriptures say; everyone will think he knows everything, without having served the elders.

न कश्चिद् अकविर् नाम युगान्ते समुपस्थिते नक्षत्राणि वियोगानि न कर्मस्था द्विजातयः
na kaścid akavir nāma yugānte samupasthite nakṣatrāṇi viyogāni na karmasthā dvijātayaḥ

चौरप्रायाश् च राजानो युगान्ते समुपस्थिते कुण्डीवृषा नैकृतिकाः सुरापा ब्रह्मवादिनः
cauraprāyāś ca rājāno yugānte samupasthite kuṇḍīvṛṣā naikṛtikāḥ surāpā brahmavādinaḥ

When the end of the age arrives, kings will be little better than thieves; brahmins will be adulterers' sons, deceitful, and drinkers of liquor, while talking of Brahman.

अश्वमेधेन यक्ष्यन्ते युगान्ते द्विजसत्तमाः याजयिष्यन्त्य् अयाज्यांस् तु तथाभक्ष्यस्य भक्षिणः

एकशङ्खास् तथा नार्यो गवेधुकपिनद्धकाः नक्षत्राणि विवर्णानि विपरिता दिशो दश
ekaśaṅkhās tathā nāryo gavedhukapinaddhakāḥ nakṣatrāṇi vivarṇāni viparitā diśo daśa

संध्यारागो विदग्धाङ्गो भविष्यति युगक्षये प्रेषयन्ति पितॄन् पुत्रा वधूः श्वश्रूः स्वकर्मसु
saṃdhyārāgo vidagdhāṅgo bhaviṣyati yugakṣaye preṣayanti pitṝn putrā vadhūḥ śvaśrūḥ svakarmasu

At the end of the age the twilight glow will look like burnt limbs; sons will send their fathers, and daughters-in-law their mothers-in-law, to work.

युगेष्व् एवं निवत्स्यन्ति प्रमदाश् च नरास् तथा अकृत्वाग्राणि भोक्ष्यन्ति द्विजाश् चैवाहुताग्नयः

भिक्षां बलिम् अदत्त्वा च भोक्ष्यन्ति पुरुषाः स्वयम् वञ्चयित्वा पतीन् सुप्तान् गमिष्यन्ति स्त्रियो ऽन्यतः

न व्याधितान् नाप्य् अरूपान् नोद्यतान् नाप्य् असूयकान् कृते न प्रतिकर्ता च युगे क्षीणे भविष्यति

स्वयं कृत्वा निवत्स्यन्ति तस्मिन् भूते युगक्षये अरण्येषु च वत्स्यन्ति नरा म्लेच्छगणैः सह
svayaṃ kṛtvā nivatsyanti tasmin bhūte yugakṣaye araṇyeṣu ca vatsyanti narā mlecchagaṇaiḥ saha

they will dwell there when the age has ended; men will live in the forests together with bands of Mlecchas.
अध्याय २३१
नैव शून्या नवारण्या भविष्यति वसुंधरा अगोप्तारश् च गोप्तारो भविष्यन्ति नराधिपाः
naiva śūnyā navāraṇyā bhaviṣyati vasuṃdharā agoptāraś ca goptāro bhaviṣyanti narādhipāḥ

English
The earth will be neither empty nor newly forested; kings who do not protect will become protectors.
अध्याय २३१
मृगैर् मत्स्यैर् विहंगैश् च श्वापदैः सर्पकीटकैः मधुशाकफलैर् मूलैर् वर्तयिष्यन्ति मानवाः
mṛgair matsyair vihaṃgaiś ca śvāpadaiḥ sarpakīṭakaiḥ madhuśākaphalair mūlair vartayiṣyanti mānavāḥ

Men will live on deer, fish, birds, beasts of prey, snakes and insects, on honey, herbs, fruits and roots.

बीजानाम् अकृतस्नेहा आहताः काष्ठशङ्कुभिः अजैडकं खरोष्ट्रं च पालयिष्यन्ति नित्यशः

Without care for seeds, turning the soil with wooden stakes, they will always tend goats and sheep, donkeys and camels.
अध्याय २३१
नदीस्रोतांसि रोत्स्यन्ति तोयार्थं कूलम् आश्रिताः पक्वान्नव्यवहारेण विपणन्तः परस्परम्
nadīsrotāṃsi rotsyanti toyārthaṃ kūlam āśritāḥ pakvānnavyavahāreṇa vipaṇantaḥ parasparam

Settling on the banks for the sake of water, they will dam the streams of rivers, trading with one another in cooked food.
अध्याय २३१
तनूरुहैर् यथाजातैः समलान्तरसंभृतैः बह्वपत्याः प्रजाहीनाः कुलशीलविवर्जिताः
tanūruhair yathājātaiḥ samalāntarasaṃbhṛtaiḥ bahvapatyāḥ prajāhīnāḥ kulaśīlavivarjitāḥ

एवं भविष्यन्ति तदा नराश् चाधर्मजीविनः हीना हीनं तथा धर्मं प्रजा समनुवत्स्यति

अध्याय २३१
आयुस् तत्र च मर्त्यानां परं त्रिंशद् भविष्यति दुर्बला विषयग्लाना जराशोकैर् अभिप्लुताः
āyus tatra ca martyānāṃ paraṃ triṃśad bhaviṣyati durbalā viṣayaglānā jarāśokair abhiplutāḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ

English
The lifespan of mortals there will be thirty years at most; they will be weak, wearied by sense objects, and overwhelmed by old age and grief.
अध्याय २३१
भविष्यन्ति तदा तेषां रोगैर् इन्द्रियसंक्षयः आयुःप्रत्ययसंरोधाद् विषयाद् उपरंस्यते
bhaviṣyanti tadā teṣāṃ rogair indriyasaṃkṣayaḥ āyuḥpratyayasaṃrodhād viṣayād uparaṃsyate

Then their senses will decay through disease, and with the checking of life's supports they will turn away from sense objects.

शुश्रूषवो भविष्यन्ति साधूनां दर्शने रताः सत्यं च प्रतिपत्स्यन्ति व्यवहारोपसंक्षयात्
śuśrūṣavo bhaviṣyanti sādhūnāṃ darśane ratāḥ satyaṃ ca pratipatsyanti vyavahāropasaṃkṣayāt

They will become eager to serve and delight in seeing the good, and will take to truth as their dealings dwindle.
अध्याय २३१
भविष्यन्ति च कामानाम् अलाभाद् धर्मशीलिनः करिष्यन्ति च संस्कारं स्वयं च क्षयपीडिताः
bhaviṣyanti ca kāmānām alābhād dharmaśīlinaḥ kariṣyanti ca saṃskāraṃ svayaṃ ca kṣayapīḍitāḥ

Through failing to obtain their desires they will become righteous, and, afflicted by decline, will themselves perform the sacraments.

एवं शुश्रूषवो दाने सत्ये प्राण्यभिरक्षणे ततः पादप्रवृत्ते तु धर्मे श्रेयो निपत्स्यते
evaṃ śuśrūṣavo dāne satye prāṇyabhirakṣaṇe tataḥ pādapravṛtte tu dharme śreyo nipatsyate

Thus becoming eager for giving, truth and the protection of living beings, when dharma begins to move again on one foot, good will return.
अध्याय २३१
तेषां लब्धानुमानानां गुणेषु परिवर्तताम् स्वादु किं त्व् इति विज्ञाय धर्म एव च दृश्यते
teṣāṃ labdhānumānānāṃ guṇeṣu parivartatām svādu kiṃ tv iti vijñāya dharma eva ca dṛśyate

For those who have gained discernment and turn toward virtues, knowing what is truly sweet, dharma alone is seen.

यथा हानिक्रमं प्राप्तास् तथा ऋद्धिक्रमं गताः प्रगृहीते ततो धर्मे प्रपश्यन्ति कृतं युगम्
yathā hānikramaṃ prāptās tathā ṛddhikramaṃ gatāḥ pragṛhīte tato dharme prapaśyanti kṛtaṃ yugam

Just as they came to decline step by step, so they go on to prosperity step by step; and when dharma is taken up, they behold the Krita age.
अध्याय २३१
साधुवृत्तिः कृतयुगे कषाये हानिर् उच्यते एक एव तु कालो ऽयं हीनवर्णो यथा शशी
sādhuvṛttiḥ kṛtayuge kaṣāye hānir ucyate eka eva tu kālo 'yaṃ hīnavarṇo yathā śaśī
हिन्दी अर्थ

English
Good conduct is said to belong to the Krita age, and decline to the age of dregs; yet it is one and the same time, like the moon that has lost its colour.

छन्नश् च तमसा सोमो यथा कलियुगं तथा मुक्तश् च तमसा सोम एवं कृतयुगं च तत्

As the moon covered by darkness, so is the Kali age; and as the moon freed from darkness, so is the Krita age.
अध्याय २३१
अर्थवादः परं ब्रह्म वेदार्थ इति तं विदुः अविविक्तम् अविज्ञातं दायाद्यम् इह धार्यते
arthavādaḥ paraṃ brahma vedārtha iti taṃ viduḥ aviviktam avijñātaṃ dāyādyam iha dhāryate

English
The Arthavada they know as the supreme Brahman and the meaning of the Veda; undiscerned and unknown, it is held here only as an inheritance.

इष्टवादस् तपो नाम तपो हि स्थविरीकृतः गुणैः कर्माभिनिर्वृत्तिर् गुणाः शुध्यन्ति कर्मणा
iṣṭavādas tapo nāma tapo hi sthavirīkṛtaḥ guṇaiḥ karmābhinirvṛttir guṇāḥ śudhyanti karmaṇā

English
Austerity is said to be the doctrine of reward, and austerity has grown old; works come about through the qualities, and the qualities are purified by works.
अध्याय २३१
आशीस् तु पुरुषं दृष्ट्वा देशकालानुवर्तिनी युगे युगे यथाकालम् ऋषिभिः समुदाहृता
āśīs tu puruṣaṃ dṛṣṭvā deśakālānuvartinī yuge yuge yathākālam ṛṣibhiḥ samudāhṛtā

English
Blessings, suited to the person, place and time, have been declared by the sages in every age according to the time.

धर्मार्थकाममोक्षाणां देवानां च प्रतिक्रिया आशिषश् च शिवाः पुण्यास् तथैवायुर् युगे युगे
dharmārthakāmamokṣāṇāṃ devānāṃ ca pratikriyā āśiṣaś ca śivāḥ puṇyās tathaivāyur yuge yuge
हिन्दी अर्थ

English
So too in every age are the remedies concerning dharma, wealth, pleasure and liberation and the gods, the holy and auspicious blessings, and the lifespan.

तथा युगानां परिवर्तनानि चिरप्रवृत्तानि विधिस्वभावात् क्षणं न संतिष्ठति जीवलोकः क्षयोदयाभ्यां परिवर्तमानः

Thus the turnings of the ages have gone on for long by the nature of the ordinance; the world of living beings does not stand still for a moment, turning through decline and rise.
