श्लोक 1

इति श्रीगारुडे महापुराणे उत्तरखण्डे द्वितीयांशे धर्मकाण्डे प्रेतकल्पे श्रीकृष्णगरुडसंवादे और्ध्वदेहिकादिनिरूपणं नाम चतुस्त्रिंशो ऽध्यायः श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम्- ३५ तर्क्ष्य उवाच ।अपरं मम सन्देहं कथयस्व जनार्दन ।पुरुषस्य च कस्यापि मता पञ्चत्वमागता

iti śrīgāruḍe mahāpurāṇe uttarakhaṇḍe dvitīyāṃśe dharmakāṇḍe pretakalpe śrīkṛṣṇagaruḍasaṃvāde aurdhvadehikādinirūpaṇaṃ nāma catustriṃśo 'dhyāyaḥ śrīgaruḍamahāpurāṇam- 35 tarkṣya uvāca / aparaṃ mama sandehaṃ kathayasva janārdana / puruṣasya ca kasyāpi matā pañcatvamāgatā

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

O bird, I shall repeat the mode of sapitdikarana already mentioned to you. The lady in question shall be joined to Uma, Laksmi and Savitri.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 2

पितामही जीवति च तथा च प्रपितामही ।वृद्धप्रपितामही तद्वन्मातृसक्तः पिता तथा

pitāmahī jīvati ca tathā ca prapitāmahī / vṛddhaprapitāmahī tadvanmātṛsaktaḥ pitā tathā

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

Three generations from one are those who share the pinda. The next three generations are those who do not share the pinda. The next three generations are those who receive the wipings of the food-offerings sticking to the hand and the tenth is near the line.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 3

प्रमातामहश्च तथा वृद्धप्रमातामहस्तथा ।केन सा मेल्यते माता एतत् कथय मे प्रभो

pramātāmahaśca tathā vṛddhapramātāmahastathā / kena sā melyate mātā etat kathaya me prabho

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

These are the names assigned to men in one's father's as well as mother's family. The householder who performs the sraddhas saves ten preceding and ten succeeding generations.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 4

श्रीकृष्ण उवाच ।पुनरुक्तं प्रवक्ष्यामि सपिण्डीकरणं खग ।उमा लक्ष्मीश्च सावित्रीत्यताभिर्मेलयेद्ध्रुवम्

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca / punaruktaṃ pravakṣyāmi sapiṇḍīkaraṇaṃ khaga / umā lakṣmīśca sāvitrītyatābhirmelayeddhruvam

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

Grandfather of the fourth degree of the first tyajaka is the first lepaka [i.e. the 7th grandfather reckoning from the householder]. Grandfatlier of the 4th degree of the first lepaka is in the 10th degree since he is the fourth in reckoning from the 7 th one.

श्लोक 5

त्रयः पिण्डभुजो ज्ञेयास्त्यजाकाश्च त्रयः स्मृताः ।त्रयः पिण्डानुलेपाश्च दशमः पङ्क्तिसंन्निधः

trayaḥ piṇḍabhujo jñeyāstyajākāśca trayaḥ smṛtāḥ / trayaḥ piṇḍānulepāśca daśamaḥ paṅktisaṃnnidhaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

Now, listen to the benefit accruing from performing the sraddhas and offering gifts according to astras in favour of the dead.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 6

इत्येते पुरुषाः ख्याताः पितृमातृकुलेषु च ।तारयेद्यजमानस्तु दश पूर्वान् दशावरान्

ityete puruṣāḥ khyātāḥ pitṛmātṛkuleṣu ca / tārayedyajamānastu daśa pūrvān daśāvarān

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

The father blesses the performer with the birth of sons, the grandfather with cattle-wealth and the great-grand- iather with coins of gold.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 7

सपिण्डः स भवेदादौ सपिण्डीकरणे कृते ।अन्त्यस्तु त्याजको ज्ञेयो यो वृद्धप्रपितामहः

sapiṇḍaḥ sa bhavedādau sapiṇḍīkaraṇe kṛte / antyastu tyājako jñeyo yo vṛddhaprapitāmahaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

Such are the benefits derivable from sraddhas and tarpanas. The great grandfather blesses one with plenty of foodstuffs.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 8

अन्तिमस्त्याजको ज्ञेयो लेपकः प्रथमो भवेत् ।लेपकस्त्वन्तिमो यस्तु स भवेत् पङ्क्तिसन्निधः

antimastyājako jñeyo lepakaḥ prathamo bhavet / lepakastvantimo yastu sa bhavet paṅktisannidhaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

Or he may be born in other species of living beings such as a tree, a bird, a reptile. If a child is born and dies, the man cannot be freed from hell, still.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 9

यजमानो भवेदेको दश पृर्त्वे दशावरे ।इत्येते पितरो ज्ञेया एकविंशति संख्यकाः

yajamāno bhavedeko daśa pṛrtve daśāvare / ityete pitaro jñeyā ekaviṃśati saṃkhyakāḥ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

For his sake the Netr&yana bali should be performed by his preceptor or disciple or even by a distant relative.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 10

विधिना कुरुते यस्तु संसारे श्राद्धमुत्तमम् ।जायते ऽत्र न सन्देहः शृणु तस्यापि यत् फलम्

vidhinā kurute yastu saṃsāre śrāddhamuttamam / jāyate 'tra na sandehaḥ śṛṇu tasyāpi yat phalam

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

He will be freed from sins and saved from hell. He will stay permanently in heaven. No doubt need be entertained on this account.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 11

पिता ददाति पुत्त्रान् वै विच्छिन्नसन्ततिः खग ।होमदाता भवेत्सोपि यस्तस्य प्रपितामहः

pitā dadāti puttrān vai vicchinnasantatiḥ khaga / homadātā bhavetsopi yastasya prapitāmahaḥ

English

Great distress will befall sons and clansmen

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 12

कृते श्राद्धे गुणा ह्येते पितॄणां तपेणे स्मृताः ।दद्याद्विपुलमन्नाद्यं वृद्धस्तु प्रपितामहः

kṛte śrāddhe guṇā hyete pitṝṇāṃ tapeṇe smṛtāḥ / dadyādvipulamannādyaṃ vṛddhastu prapitāmahaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

Four effigies of Darbha are consecrated with the mantras of the naksatras. These are thrown beside the corpse.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 13

यस्य पुंसश्च मर्त्ये वै विच्छिन्ना सन्ततिः खग ।स वसेन्नरके घोरे पङ्के मग्नः करी यथा

yasya puṃsaśca martye vai vicchinnā santatiḥ khaga / sa vasennarake ghore paṅke magnaḥ karī yathā

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

The man who dies on any of these five days does not attain salvation unless for his sake the gingelly seeds, cow, gold and ghee arc gifted away.

श्लोक 14

योन्यन्तरेषु जायते यत्र वृक्षसरीसृपाः ।न सन्ततिं विना सो ऽत्र मुच्यते नरकाद्ध्रुवम्

yonyantareṣu jāyate yatra vṛkṣasarīsṛpāḥ / na santatiṃ vinā so 'tra mucyate narakāddhruvam

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

Gifts are made to brahmins to ward off impending calamity after the expiry of impurity period. QTts help the deceased attain release from the bonds of his previons actions.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 15

आचार्यस्तस्य शिष्यो वा यो दूरे ऽपि हि गात्रेजः ।नारायणबलिं कुर्यात् तस्याद्देशेन भक्तितः

ācāryastasya śiṣyo vā yo dūre 'pi hi gātrejaḥ / nārāyaṇabaliṃ kuryāt tasyāddeśena bhaktitaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

O bird, a third method of reckoning the sixteen Sraddhas is as follows:— the twelve monthly Sraddhas together with that on the eleventh, that on tripaksa (after the expiry of si.x weeks) and those on the two rikta days.

श्लोक 16

विशुद्धः सर्वपापेभ्यो मुक्तः स नरकाद्ध्रुवम् ।निवसेन्नाकलोके च नात्र कार्या विचारणा

viśuddhaḥ sarvapāpebhyo muktaḥ sa narakāddhruvam / nivasennākaloke ca nātra kāryā vicāraṇā

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

The first set of sixteen Sraddhas are for purifying the corpse. The fifty Sriddhas are for purifying the line of Manes (pitrpankti).

श्लोक 17

आदौ कृत्वा धनिष्ठाञ्च एतन्नक्षत्रपञ्चकम् ।रेवत्यन्तं सदा दूष्यमशुभं सर्वदा भवेत्

ādau kṛtvā dhaniṣṭhāñca etannakṣatrapañcakam / revatyantaṃ sadā dūṣyamaśubhaṃ sarvadā bhavet

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

Ceremonial ablutions, gifts, sacrifices, water- libations and worship of gods are futile when performed with a dead body in the village. The convention holds good for all kiths and kins.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 18

दाह (बलि) स्तत्र न कर्तव्यो विप्रदिसर्वजातिषु ।दीयते न जलं तत्र अशुभं जायते ध्रुवम् ।लोकयात्रा न कर्तव्या दुः खार्तः स्वजनो यदि

dāha (bali) statra na kartavyo vipradisarvajātiṣu / dīyate na jalaṃ tatra aśubhaṃ jāyate dhruvam / lokayātrā na kartavyā duḥ khārtaḥ svajano yadi

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

O lord of birds, this convention prevails among cousins and kins. If it is violated, the dead man is tarnished by sins.

श्लोक 19

पञ्चकानन्तरं तस्य कर्तव्यं सर्वमन्यथा ।पुत्राणां गोत्रिणां तस्य सन्तापो ऽप्युपजायते

pañcakānantaraṃ tasya kartavyaṃ sarvamanyathā / putrāṇāṃ gotriṇāṃ tasya santāpo 'pyupajāyate

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

After the panchaka period everything for him should be done; otherwise distress arises for his sons and kinsmen.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 20

गृहे हानिर्भवेत्तस्य ऋक्षेष्वेषु मृतश्च यः ।अथवा ऋक्षमध्ये ऽपि दाहस्तस्य विधीयते

gṛhe hānirbhavettasya ṛkṣeṣveṣu mṛtaśca yaḥ / athavā ṛkṣamadhye 'pi dāhastasya vidhīyate

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

One who dies under these constellations brings loss to his house; or, if he dies within the constellation period, his cremation is still prescribed,

श्लोक 21

क्रियते मानुषाणान्तु सद्य आहुतिकारणात् ।सद्याहुतिकरं पुण्यं तीर्थे तद्दाह उत्तमः

kriyate mānuṣāṇāntu sadya āhutikāraṇāt / sadyāhutikaraṃ puṇyaṃ tīrthe taddāha uttamaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

for men's cremation is performed at once, for the sake of the immediate offering. Cremation at a tirtha, bringing immediate oblation, is meritorious and best.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 22

विप्रैर्नियमतः कार्यः समन्त्रो विधिपूर्वकः ।शवस्य च समीपे तु क्षिप्यन्ते पुत्तलास्ततः

viprairniyamataḥ kāryaḥ samantro vidhipūrvakaḥ / śavasya ca samīpe tu kṣipyante puttalāstataḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

It must be performed duly by brahmins, with mantras and according to rule. Then effigies are placed beside the corpse —

दर्भमयाश्च चत्वारो विप्रा मन्त्राभिमन्त्रिताः ।ततो दाहः प्रकर्तव्यः तैश्च पुत्तलकैः सह

darbhamayāśca catvāro viprā mantrābhimantritāḥ / tato dāhaḥ prakartavyaḥ taiśca puttalakaiḥ saha

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

four made of darbha grass, consecrated with mantras by brahmins; then the cremation should be performed together with those effigies.

श्लोक 24

सूतकान्ते ततः पुत्रः कुर्याच्छान्तिकमुत्तमम्

sūtakānte tataḥ putraḥ kuryācchāntikamuttamam

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

Then, at the end of the period of impurity, the son should perform the excellent pacificatory rite.

श्लोक 25

पञ्चकेषु मृतो यो ऽसौ न गतिं लभते नरः ।तिलान् गाश्च सुवर्णं च तमुद्दिश्य घृतं ददेत्

pañcakeṣu mṛto yo 'sau na gatiṃ labhate naraḥ / tilān gāśca suvarṇaṃ ca tamuddiśya ghṛtaṃ dadet

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

A man who dies during the panchaka does not attain a good destiny; for him one should give sesame, cows, gold and ghee.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 26

विप्राणां दीयते दानं सर्वोपद्रवनाशनम् ।सूतकान्ते च सत्पुत्रैः स प्रेतो लभते गतिम्

viprāṇāṃ dīyate dānaṃ sarvopadravanāśanam / sūtakānte ca satputraiḥ sa preto labhate gatim

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

The gift given to brahmins destroys all misfortune; and at the end of the impurity, through his good sons, that departed one attains his goal.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 27

भाजनोपानहौ च्छत्रं हेममुद्राच वाससी ।दक्षिणा दीयते विप्र सर्वपातकमोचनी

bhājanopānahau cchatraṃ hemamudrāca vāsasī / dakṣiṇā dīyate vipra sarvapātakamocanī

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

A vessel, sandals, an umbrella, a gold coin and a pair of garments are given as the fee, O brahmin, releasing him from all sins.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 28

बालवृद्धातुराणाञ्च मृतानां पञ्चकेषु हि ।विधानं यो न कुर्वीत विघ्नस्तस्य प्रजायते

bālavṛddhāturāṇāñca mṛtānāṃ pañcakeṣu hi / vidhānaṃ yo na kurvīta vighnastasya prajāyate

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

For children, the old and the sick who die in the panchaka, whoever does not perform the prescribed rite meets with obstacles.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 29

अष्टादशैव वस्तूनि प्रेतश्राद्धे विवर्जयेत् ।आशिषो द्विगुणान् दर्भान् प्रणवान् नैकपिण्डताम्

aṣṭādaśaiva vastūni pretaśrāddhe vivarjayet / āśiṣo dviguṇān darbhān praṇavān naikapiṇḍatām

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

In the shraddha for the departed eighteen things should be avoided: blessings, doubled darbha grass, the pranava, and the single rice-ball,

अग्नौकरणमुच्छिष्टं श्राद्धं वै वैश्वदैविकम् ।विकिरं च स्वधाकारं पितृशब्दं न चोच्चरेत्

agnaukaraṇamucchiṣṭaṃ śrāddhaṃ vai vaiśvadaivikam / vikiraṃ ca svadhākāraṃ pitṛśabdaṃ na coccaret

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

the offering into fire, the leftovers, the shraddha to the Vishvedevas, the scattered offering, the cry of svadha; and one should not utter the word 'ancestors.'

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 31

अनुशब्दं न कुर्वीत नावाहनमथोल्मुकम् ।आसीमान्तं न कुर्वीत प्रदक्षिणविसर्जनम्

anuśabdaṃ na kurvīta nāvāhanamatholmukam / āsīmāntaṃ na kurvīta pradakṣiṇavisarjanam

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

One should not use the word 'anu,' nor the invocation, nor the firebrand; one should not go to the boundary, nor perform the circumambulation and dismissal.

श्लोक 32

न कुर्यात् तिलहोमञ्च द्विजः पूर्णाहुतिं तथा ।न कुर्याद्वैश्वदेवं चेत्कर्ता गच्छत्यधोगतिम्

na kuryāt tilahomañca dvijaḥ pūrṇāhutiṃ tathā / na kuryādvaiśvadevaṃ cetkartā gacchatyadhogatim

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

The brahmin should not perform the sesame oblation or the final full oblation; if he performs the Vaishvadeva, the performer goes to a low state.

मलिनश्राद्धसंज्ञानं पूर्वषोडशकं तथा ।स्थाने द्वारे चार्धमार्गे चितायां शवहस्तके

malinaśrāddhasaṃjñānaṃ pūrvaṣoḍaśakaṃ tathā / sthāne dvāre cārdhamārge citāyāṃ śavahastake

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

śmaśānavāsibhūtebhyaḥ pañcamaṃ prativeśyakam / ṣaṣṭhaṃ sañcayane proktaṃ daśa piṇḍā daśāhikāḥ / śrāddhaṣoḍaṣakañcaitat prathamaṃ parikīrtitam

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

the fifth for the beings dwelling in the cremation ground, for neighbours; the sixth is declared at the gathering of the bones; and the ten rice-balls of the ten days — this is proclaimed the first set of sixteen shraddhas.

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

Now hear from me, Tarkshya, the second, middle set of sixteen: here eleven shraddhas are to be performed according to rule,

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 36

ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवाद्यञ्च तथान्यच्छ्राद्धपञ्चकम् ।एवं षोडशकं प्राहुरेतत् तत्त्वविदो जनाः

brahmaviṣṇuśivādyañca tathānyacchrāddhapañcakam / evaṃ ṣoḍaśakaṃ prāhuretat tattvavido janāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

those to Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and the rest, and another set of five shraddhas; thus those who know the truth speak of this set of sixteen.

अध्याय २७४

श्लोक 37

द्वादश प्रतिमास्यानि श्राद्धमेकादशे तथा ।त्रिपक्षसम्भवञ्चैव द्वे रिक्ते खग षोडश

dvādaśa pratimāsyāni śrāddhamekādaśe tathā / tripakṣasambhavañcaiva dve rikte khaga ṣoḍaśa

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

The twelve monthly shraddhas, the shraddha on the eleventh day, the one arising at three fortnights, and two for the gaps — these, O bird, make sixteen.

श्लोक 38

आद्यं शवविशुद्ध्यर्थं कृत्वान्यच्च त्रिषोडशम् ।पितृपाङ्क्तिविशुद्ध्यर्थं शताद्धैंन तु योजयेत्

ādyaṃ śavaviśuddhyarthaṃ kṛtvānyacca triṣoḍaśam / pitṛpāṅktiviśuddhyarthaṃ śatāddhaiṃna tu yojayet

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

Having performed the first for the purification of the corpse and the other three sets of sixteen, one should join him with the fifty for the purification of the ancestral line.

श्लोक 39

शतार्धेन विहीनो यो मिलितः पङ्क्तिभाङ्न हि ।चत्वारिंशत् तथैवाष्टश्राद्धं प्रेतत्वनाशनम्

śatārdhena vihīno yo militaḥ paṅktibhāṅna hi / catvāriṃśat tathaivāṣṭaśrāddhaṃ pretatvanāśanam

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

One who is joined without the fifty does not share in the line. The forty-eight shraddhas destroy the state of a ghost;

श्लोक 40

सकृदूनशतार्धेन सम्भवेत् पङ्क्तिसन्निधः ।मेलनीयः शतार्धेन सन्धिः श्राद्धेन तत्त्वतः

sakṛdūnaśatārdhena sambhavet paṅktisannidhaḥ / melanīyaḥ śatārdhena sandhiḥ śrāddhena tattvataḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

with forty-nine one comes near the line, and truly he is to be joined by the fiftieth shraddha as the link.

श्लोक 41

(अथ शवाविधिः) ।शवस्य शिबिकायां करचरणबन्धनं तत्र कर्तव्यम् ।एवं चेन्न विधानं विधीयते तत्पिशाचपरिभवनम्

(atha śavāvidhiḥ) / śavasya śibikāyāṃ karacaraṇabandhanaṃ tatra kartavyam / evaṃ cenna vidhānaṃ vidhīyate tatpiśācaparibhavanam

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

(Now the rite for the corpse.) On the bier the hands and feet of the corpse should be bound; if this rule is not followed, it is overpowered by pishachas.

श्लोक 42

संजायते रजन्याञ्च शवनिर्गमने राष्ट्रं भयशून्यम् ।शवं न मुञ्चेत मुच्यते चेत् दुः स्पर्शाद्दुर्गतिर्भवेत्

saṃjāyate rajanyāñca śavanirgamane rāṣṭraṃ bhayaśūnyam / śavaṃ na muñceta mucyate cet duḥ sparśāddurgatirbhavet

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

If the corpse is carried out at night the realm is free of fear. The corpse should not be let go; if it is let go, an evil touch brings a bad destiny.

ताम्बूलं दन्तकाष्ठञ्च भोजनं ऋतुसेवनम् ।ग्राममध्ये स्थिते प्रेते वर्जयेत् पिण्डपातनम्

tāmbūlaṃ dantakāṣṭhañca bhojanaṃ ṛtusevanam / grāmamadhye sthite prete varjayet piṇḍapātanam

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

Betel, tooth-sticks, eating and marital relations should be avoided, and the offering of rice-balls, while a corpse lies in the village.

ग्राममध्ये स्थिते प्रेते श्रुते भुङ्क्ते यदृच्छया ।तदन्नं मांसवज्ज्ञेयं तत्तोयं रुधिरोपमम्

grāmamadhye sthite prete śrute bhuṅkte yadṛcchayā / tadannaṃ māṃsavajjñeyaṃ tattoyaṃ rudhiropamam

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

If anyone knowingly eats as he pleases while a corpse lies in the village, that food is to be regarded as flesh and that water as blood.

श्लोक 43-2

(३५।४४) स्नानं दानं जपो होमस्तर्पणं सुरपूजनम् ।ग्राममध्ये स्थिते प्रेते शुद्ध्यर्थं ज्ञातिधर्मतः

(35.44) snānaṃ dānaṃ japo homastarpaṇaṃ surapūjanam / grāmamadhye sthite prete śuddhyarthaṃ jñātidharmataḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

Bathing, giving, japa, oblation, libations and worship of the gods, while a corpse lies in the village, are for purification according to the duty of kinsmen.

(३५।४५) ज्ञातिसम्बन्धिनामेवं व्यवहारः खगेश्वर ।विलुप्य ज्ञातिधर्मञ्च प्रेतपापेन लिप्यते

(35.45) jñātisambandhināmevaṃ vyavahāraḥ khageśvara / vilupya jñātidharmañca pretapāpena lipyate

हिन्दी अर्थ

यश्चेदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यो यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत्। विहाय यातनां घोरां धूतपापो दिवं ब्रजेत्॥

English

Such is the conduct of kinsmen and relatives, O lord of birds; one who neglects the duty of kinsmen is stained by the sin of the departed.
