English
For him who knows thus, the sacrifice has the Self as sacrificer, faith as wife, the body as fuel, the chest as altar, the hairs as grass, the Veda as topknot, the heart as sacrificial post, desire as ghee, anger as victim, austerity as fire, self-control and calm as the slaughterer, giving as the fee; speech is the Hotri, breath the Udgatri, the eye the Adhvaryu, the mind the Brahma, the ear the Agnidhra. As long as one lives, that is the initiation; what he eats is the offering; what he drinks is his soma-drinking; what he delights in is the Upasad rites; his moving about, sitting and rising is the Pravargya; his mouth is the Ahavaniya fire; his utterance is the oblation; his knowledge is what he offers; what he eats evening and morning is the fuel; morning, midday and evening are the pressings; day and night are the new-moon and full-moon sacrifices; the half-months and months are the Chaturmasya rites; the seasons are the animal sacrifices; the years and cycles of years are the groups of days. This is the all-wealth sacrificial session; death is the final bath. This indeed is the Agnihotra session lasting till old age and death. He who, knowing thus, dies in the northern course, having reached the greatness of the gods, attains union with the Sun; and he who dies in the southern, having reached the greatness of the fathers, attains union with the Moon. These are the two greatnesses of Sun and Moon; the knowing Brahmin attains them; therefore the greatness of Brahman — thus the Upanishad.
