Understanding the Self

आत्मा को समझें

Read four verses from the Gita’s second chapter on the Self (Atman).

  1. मूल श्लोक (Original Sanskrit)

    देहिनोऽस्मिन्यथा देहे कौमारं यौवनं जरा।तथा देहान्तरप्राप्तिर्धीरस्तत्र न मुह्यति

Literal TranslationJust as the self associated with a body passes through childhood, youth, and old age, so too, at death, it passes into another body. A wise man is not deluded by that.

    Context (प्रसंग)

The embodied self passing through childhood, youth and age.

    Simple Explanation (सरल अर्थ)

The steady person is not shaken by bodily change.

    Pause and Think (आत्म-चिंतन)

“What in you has stayed the same while everything else changed?”

  2. मूल श्लोक (Original Sanskrit)

    न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचिन्नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः।अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणोन हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे

Literal TranslationIt is never born; it never dies; having come into existence once, it never ceases to exist. Unborn, eternal, perpetual, and primordial, it is not destroyed when the body is destroyed.

    Context (प्रसंग)

The Self as never born and never dying.

    Simple Explanation (सरल अर्थ)

The Self is not ended when the body ends.

    Pause and Think (आत्म-चिंतन)

“How does this view change what you hold on to?”

  3. मूल श्लोक (Original Sanskrit)

    वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहायनवानि गृह्णाति नरोऽपराणि।तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णान्यन्यानि संयाति नवानि देही

Literal TranslationAs a man casts off worn-out garments and puts on new ones, so does the embodied self cast off its worn-out bodies and enter into new ones.

    Context (प्रसंग)

Changing clothes as an image of taking new bodies.

    Simple Explanation (सरल अर्थ)

As old garments are set aside, the embodied self takes new forms.

    Pause and Think (आत्म-चिंतन)

“What image helps you think about change without fear?”

    Next reading
  4. मूल श्लोक (Original Sanskrit)

    नैनं छिन्दन्ति शस्त्राणि नैनं दहति पावकः।न चैनं क्लेदयन्त्यापो न शोषयति मारुतः

Literal TranslationWeapons cannot cleave It, fire cannot burn It, waters cannot wet It, and wind cannot dry It.

    Context (प्रसंग)

What cannot be cut or burned.

    Simple Explanation (सरल अर्थ)

Weapons cannot cut consciousness; it cannot be harmed.

    Pause and Think (आत्म-चिंतन)

“What feels unharmed in you even on hard days?”
