From Satyaloka; where there is no return, that is called Brahma's world. From the foot downward is Bhuloka; Bhuvah is remembered up to the sun; Svarloka and up to Bhuvah, fourteen niyutas. The egg of Brahma is a single staff, surrounded by the cosmic shell; by water, fire, air, space, then up to the origin of elements; the egg is encased tenfold, the origin of elements by the great, likewise; the remainder in tens. Having covered the great, the Pradhana stands; Ananta has no end nor does his constitution exist. That Prakriti is the cause of all, O sage, in the beginning. Countless eggs were produced there for those who see. As fire in wood, as oil in sesame, so is the Person: abiding in Pradhana, pervading, the Self of consciousness, knowing the Self. Pradhana and Purusha are the Self of all beings, by Vishnu's power in the great, wise activity, holding refuge; their separation is the cause of doubt. Mahakhya, Svatala and also Patala, O best one; black, yellow, red, white, pebble, rock and golden lands; in them and others Daityas and others dwell in comfort. Below the Patalas at the end is Shesha, Vishnu's tamasic form; Ananta bearing the earth on his head and holding other qualities; below the earth the hells lead the world, Kshatra-Vaishnava. As long as the earth is flooded by water, so long is space held. The doctrine be so. [This passage is a stray insertion from another section, noted by manuscript readings.] I shall tell the eight houses beginning with banner in the order of Indra and the rest; the washing-house, the garland-house, in fire its kitchen.
