इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महादृवायुप्रोक्ते पूर्वभागे द्वितीये ऽनुषङ्गपादे ध्रुवचर्याकीर्त्तनं नाम त्रयोविंशतितमो ऽध्यायः सूत उवाच एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु सुनयः पुनस्ते संशयान्विताः ।पप्रच्छुरुत्तरं भूयस्तदा ते रोमहर्षणम्

iti śrībrahmāṇḍe mahādṛvāyuprokte pūrvabhāge dvitīye 'nuṣaṅgapāde dhruvacaryākīrttanaṃ nāma trayoviṃśatitamo 'dhyāyaḥ sūta uvāca etacchrutvā tu sunayaḥ punaste saṃśayānvitāḥ / papracchuruttaraṃ bhūyastadā te romaharṣaṇam

कालेयपंक सुर भीकृतनन्दनोत्यशुभ्रप्रसूननिकर-

English

The rainfall has its root (source) in the sun water; proceeds from (functions on account of) the sun. It is after being presided over by Dhruva that the sun works for rain.

श्लोक 2

यदेतदुक्तं भवतागृहाणीत्येव विस्तृतम् ।कथं देवगृहाणि स्युः कथं ज्योतींषिवर्णय

yadetaduktaṃ bhavatāgṛhāṇītyeva vistṛtam / kathaṃ devagṛhāṇi syuḥ kathaṃ jyotīṃṣivarṇaya

The Cctmdas (Vedic Metres) have assumed the forms of horses and arc stationed in the direction of the wheel. The chariot has characteristics similar to those of the chariot of Varuia.

श्लोक 3

एतत्सर्वं समाचक्ष्व ज्योतिषां चैव निर्णयम् ।वायुरुवाच श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तेषां तदा सूतः समाहितः

etatsarvaṃ samācakṣva jyotiṣāṃ caiva nirṇayam / vāyuruvāca śrutvā tu vacanaṃ teṣāṃ tadā sūtaḥ samāhitaḥ

प्रविकीरये माण: ।

Muhurtas and Kal are remembered as the beauti¬ ful trappings and fittings. Kastha is remembered as its nose and the (Moment) is its axle.

उवाच परमं वाक्यं तेषां संशयनिर्णयम् ।अस्मिन्नर्थे माहाप्राज्ञैर्यदुक्तं ज्ञानबुद्धिभिः

uvāca paramaṃ vākyaṃ teṣāṃ saṃśayanirṇayam / asminnarthe māhāprājñairyaduktaṃ jñānabuddhibhiḥ

श्लोक 5

एतद्वो ऽहं प्रवक्ष्यामि सूर्याचन्द्रमसोर्भवम् ।यथा देवगृहाणीह सूर्यचन्द्रग्रहाः स्मृताः

etadvo 'haṃ pravakṣyāmi sūryācandramasorbhavam / yathā devagṛhāṇīha sūryacandragrahāḥ smṛtāḥ

ततः परं च त्रिविधस्याग्नेर्वक्ष्ये समुद्भवम् ।दिव्यस्य भौतिकस्याग्नेरब्योनेः पार्थि वस्य तु

tataḥ paraṃ ca trividhasyāgnervakṣye samudbhavam / divyasya bhautikasyāgnerabyoneḥ pārthi vasya tu

sarvabhūtāvaśiṣṭe 'smiṃlloke naṣṭaviśeṣaṇe / svayaṃbhūrbhagavāṃstatra lokatantrārthasādhakaḥ

खद्योतवत्स व्यचरदाविर्भावचिकीर्षया ।सो ऽग्निं दृष्ट्वाथ लोकादौ पृथिवीजलसंश्रितम्

khadyotavatsa vyacaradāvirbhāvacikīrṣayā / so 'gniṃ dṛṣṭvātha lokādau pṛthivījalasaṃśritam

संवृत्य तं प्रकाशार्थं त्रिधा व्यमजदीश्वरः ।पवनो यस्तु लोके ऽस्मिन्पार्थिवः सो ऽग्निरुच्यते

saṃvṛtya taṃ prakāśārthaṃ tridhā vyamajadīśvaraḥ / pavano yastu loke 'sminpārthivaḥ so 'gnirucyate

यश्चासौ तपते सूर्ये शुचिरग्निस्तु स स्मृतः ।वैद्युतो ऽब्जस्तु विज्ञेयस्तेषां वक्ष्ये ऽथ लक्षमम्

yaścāsau tapate sūrye śuciragnistu sa smṛtaḥ / vaidyuto 'bjastu vijñeyasteṣāṃ vakṣye 'tha lakṣamam

अतिथि के अचेन करने में परमाधिक समुत्सुक उस नगर वासियों की अङ्गं नाओं के करकमलों से गिरी हुई खीलों की वर्षा हो रही घी । उस समय में होने वाले प्छ (कीच) से सुगन्धितं नन्दन वन में समुत्पन्न पुष्पों की"राशियाँ बरसायों जा रही थीं जिन पर सोरभ से संमोहित भ्रमर-गुञ्जारः कर रहे

वैद्युतो जाठरः सौरो ह्यपां गर्भास्त्रयो ऽग्रयः ।तस्मादपः पिबन्सूर्यो गोभिर्दीप्यत्यसौ दिवि

vaidyuto jāṭharaḥ sauro hyapāṃ garbhāstrayo 'grayaḥ / tasmādapaḥ pibansūryo gobhirdīpyatyasau divi

वैद्युतेन समाविष्टो वार्ष्यो नाद्भिः प्रशाम्यति ।मानवा नां च कुक्षिस्थो नाद्भिः शास्यति पावकः

vaidyutena samāviṣṭo vārṣyo nādbhiḥ praśāmyati / mānavā nāṃ ca kukṣistho nādbhiḥ śāsyati pāvakaḥ

जैसे मन्दराचल चन्द्रमा की किरणों के सबुदाय से शोभाशाज़ी हुआ करता है। उस सभय अस्पन्त उवार और लोकों में चिन्तन न करने के योग्य ब्राह्मणों की तपश्चर्या का भी अबलोकन राज! ने किया था जो कि अस्य लोकों में महादुलंभ और स्पृहणीय शोभा से समन्वित सी रचा

श्लोक 14

तस्मात्सौरो वैद्युतश्च जाठरश्चप्यनिन्धनः ।किञ्चिदप्सु मतं तेजः किञ्चिद्दृष्टमबिं धनम्

tasmātsauro vaidyutaśca jāṭharaścapyanindhanaḥ / kiñcidapsu mataṃ tejaḥ kiñciddṛṣṭamabiṃ dhanam

मेने च हैहयपति भूं त्रि दुरलभिय क्षात्री मनोहरतरा सहिता

These abide in the sun for the period of two months each in due order.

श्लोक 15

काष्ठेन्धनस्तु निर्मथ्यः सो ऽद्भिः शाम्यति पावकः ।अर्चिष्मान्पवमानो ऽग्निर्निष्प्रभो जाठरः स्मृतः

kāṣṭhendhanastu nirmathyaḥ so 'dbhiḥ śāmyati pāvakaḥ / arciṣmānpavamāno 'gnirniṣprabho jāṭharaḥ smṛtaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

मध्येपुरं पुरजनोपचितां विभूतिमालोकयन्सह

These verses (2-24) ecumierate the names of the different devw> sages etc.-tbe hqitad who occupy the solar chariot every month. These verses are common to the descrdoa of the Solar chariot in other Purioai e.g. the Mt. F. 125. 1«$4, Vk* 1-26 with slight differences in the names of the bccupaati of the chariot.

यश्चायं मण्डले शुक्लो निरूष्मा संप्रकाशकः ।प्रभा सौरी तु पादेन ह्यस्तं याति देवाकरे

yaścāyaṃ maṇḍale śuklo nirūṣmā saṃprakāśakaḥ / prabhā saurī tu pādena hyastaṃ yāti devākare

हिन्दी अर्थ

राजा ततो मुनिबरोपचितां सपर्यामात्मानुरूपमिह

Making the Pitt'S, Devas and Human beings well nourished, O Britbmanas, Savitf the cause of days and nights goes on revolving.

श्लोक 17

अग्निमाविशते रात्रौ तस्माद्दूरात्प्रकाशते ।उद्यन्तं च पुनः सूर्यमौष्णमयमाग्नेयमाविशत्

agnimāviśate rātrau tasmāddūrātprakāśate / udyantaṃ ca punaḥ sūryamauṣṇamayamāgneyamāviśat

पोरे: समेत्य विविकाहणपाणिसि्च मार्गे मुदा विरचितां:

These Devas reside in the sun for periods of two months in due order. These twelve groups of seven (orheptads) identify themselves with their place of office and residence.

श्लोक 18

पादेन पार्थिवस्याग्नेस्तस्मादग्निस्तपत्यसौ ।प्राकाश्यं च तथौष्ण्यं च सौराग्नेये तु तेजसी

pādena pārthivasyāgnestasmādagnistapatyasau / prākāśyaṃ ca tathauṣṇyaṃ ca saurāgneye tu tejasī

हिन्दी अर्थ

कक्षांतराणि नुषतिः अनकेरतोत्य ओणि क्रमेण च

English

By means of their splendour they increase the excels lent splendour of the sun. By means of words (and prayers) composed by themselves, sages eulogise the sun.

परस्परानुप्रवेशादाप्यायेते परस्परम् ।उत्तरे चैव भूम्यर्द्धे तथा ह्यग्निश्च दक्षिणे

parasparānupraveśādāpyāyete parasparam / uttare caiva bhūmyarddhe tathā hyagniśca dakṣiṇe

The Gandharvas and the Apsaras serve him by means of songs and dances. The Grimaols, Yakas and Bhutas perform the worship of his rays.

उत्तिष्ठति पुनः सूर्ये रात्रिराविशते ह्यपः ।तस्मात्तप्ता भवन्त्यापो दिवारत्रिप्रवेशनात्

uttiṣṭhati punaḥ sūrye rātrirāviśate hyapaḥ / tasmāttaptā bhavantyāpo divāratripraveśanāt

हिन्दी अर्थ

जमदग्नि द्वारा अतिथि सत्कार नबे

English

The serpents carry the sun, the demons follow him. From sunrise to sunset, the Valakhilyas surround the sun and lead him on.

श्लोक 21

अस्तं याति पुन सूर्ये अहर्वै प्रविशत्यपः ।तस्मान्नक्तं पुनः शुक्ला आपो ऽदृश्यन्त भास्वराः

astaṃ yāti puna sūrye aharvai praviśatyapaḥ / tasmānnaktaṃ punaḥ śuklā āpo 'dṛśyanta bhāsvarāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

प्रवेकरु्चिजालविराजमानम्

English

All these followers of the day revolve along with the sun. They'shower rain on the subjects, they scorch them and they delight them (too).

श्लोक 22

एतेन क्रमयोगेन भूम्यर्द्धे दक्षिणोत्तरे ।उदयास्तमने नित्यमहोरात्रं विशत्यपः

etena kramayogena bhūmyarddhe dakṣiṇottare / udayāstamane nityamahorātraṃ viśatyapaḥ

क्षत्रियों के अधिपति ने उस नगर की सम्पदा को देखकर है राजन्! बचनों की भाति मन में बहुत ही अधिक प्रशंसा की थी। और हैहयपति ने यह् मान लिया था कि भूमण्डल में अधिक मनोहह हित के सहित क्षत्रियों की सम्पदा ऐसी परम दुलंभ है । अर्थात् क्षत्रियों को सम्पदा ऐसी कभी भी

The sun releases heat energy during the summer. He scatters rain during the rainy season and snow (during winter). He is the maker of day and night. He keeps up his movement in accordance with (the changing) seasons and gratifies the Devos, the Pitrs and the human beings with the rays suitably adapted.

यश्चासौ तपते सूर्यः पिबन्नंभो गभस्तिभिः ।पार्थिवाग्निविमिश्रो ऽसौ दिव्यः शुचिरिति स्मृतः

yaścāsau tapate sūryaḥ pibannaṃbho gabhastibhiḥ / pārthivāgnivimiśro 'sau divyaḥ śuciriti smṛtaḥ

सहस्रपादसौ वह्निर्घृतकुंभनिभः शुचिः ।आदत्ते स तु नाडीनां सहस्रेण समन्ततः

sahasrapādasau vahnirghṛtakuṃbhanibhaḥ śuciḥ / ādatte sa tu nāḍīnāṃ sahasreṇa samantataḥ

मन में विप्रश्ली की महत्ता कां ज्ञान हुआ था ।३०। जिस समय में राजा नगर में भीतर गमन कर रहा था उस समय में अपने पाव में चरण करने वालों के द्वारा सोधों का वर्ग उसे दिखाया गया था तया वहाँ के ग्रुरुजतों के द्वारा सभी ओर से वह पूज्यमान हो रहा था और उसको विशेष आनम्द प्राप्त

तस्य रश्मिसहस्रं तु शीतवर्षोष्णनिःस्तवम् ।तासां चतुःशता नाड्यो वर्षन्ते चित्र मूर्त्तयः

tasya raśmisahasraṃ tu śītavarṣoṣṇaniḥstavam / tāsāṃ catuḥśatā nāḍyo varṣante citra mūrttayaḥ

सभी अनुचरों के सहित अपने स्वरूप के अनुरूप मुनिवर के द्वारा इस सपर्या का लाभ प्राप्त कीजिए ।३१। फिर राजा अपने स्वार्थ को तिवत्तित करके प्रकल्पित गृह की और अभिमुख होकर वहाँ से चला था। मार्ग में सभी ओर से अनेक प्रकार की पूजा को सामग्रो हाथों में ग्रहण किये हुए पुरवा-

चन्दनाश्चैव साध्यश्च कूतनाकूतनास्तथा ।अमृता नामतः सर्वा रश्मयो वृष्टिसर्जनाः

candanāścaiva sādhyaśca kūtanākūtanāstathā / amṛtā nāmataḥ sarvā raśmayo vṛṣṭisarjanāḥ

सियों ने एकत्रित होकर अपने करों को जोड़कर उसका परमाधिक आतिथ्य सत्कार किया था और पद-पद पर जयकार के शब्दों के घोष से तथा सूर्य की ध्वनि से सभी दिशाओं को बधिर करते हुए उस राज़ा'का नगर निबा- सियों ने विशेष सम्मान किया था । फिर राजा ने क्रम से तीन अन्य कक्षं

हिमोद्गताश्च ताभ्यो ऽन्या रश्मयस्त्रिशताः पुनः ।दृश्या मेघाश्च याम्यश्च ह्रदिन्यो हिमसर्जनाः

का अतिक्रमण किया था जिनमें बड़े ही संभ्रम ठाले कञ्चुकी वर्तमान ये ।

The chariot of Soma (the Moon) has three wheels.* His horses have the lustre of Kunda (white Jasmine) flowers. They are ten in number and they are yoked to the lefl as well as to the right. The moon traverses by means of this.

It should be known that the chariot of the moon has three wheels with horses on cither side. The chariot is born (i.e. evolved] out of the womb of the waters along with the horses and the charioteer.
