इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते पूर्वभागे द्वितीये ऽनुषङ्गपादे मन्वन्तरवर्णनं नामाष्टात्रिंशत्तमो ऽध्यायः समाप्तो ऽयं ब्रह्माण्डमहापुराणपूर्वभागः श्रीगणेशाय नमः अथ ब्रह्माण्डमहापुराणमध्यभागप्रारम्भः ।शांशपायन उवाच पादः शेक्तो द्वितीयस्तु अनुषङ्गेन नस्त्वया ।तृतीयं विस्तरात्पादं सोपोद्धातं प्रवर्त्तय

iti śrībrahmāṇḍe mahāpurāṇe vāyuprokte pūrvabhāge dvitīye 'nuṣaṅgapāde manvantaravarṇanaṃ nāmāṣṭātriṃśattamo 'dhyāyaḥ samāpto 'yaṃ brahmāṇḍamahāpurāṇapūrvabhāgaḥ śrīgaṇeśāya namaḥ atha brahmāṇḍamahāpurāṇamadhyabhāgaprārambhaḥ / śāṃśapāyana uvāca pādaḥ śekto dvitīyastu anuṣaṅgena nastvayā / tṛtīyaṃ vistarātpādaṃ sopoddhātaṃ pravarttaya

त्वं मे गुरुः सुहृद्देवं बंधमित्रं च केवलम् ।

English

"I shall narrate to you all the Third Pdda ( called ) Upodghdta in details and in aggregate, O Brahmanas. Under- stand it even as I recite.

श्लोक 2

सूत उवाच कीर्त्तयिष्ये तृतीयं वः सोपोद्धातं सविस्तरम् ।पादं समुच्चयाद्विप्रा गदतो मे निबोधत

sūta uvāca kīrttayiṣye tṛtīyaṃ vaḥ sopoddhātaṃ savistaram / pādaṃ samuccayādviprā gadato me nibodhata

राजा सगर ने कहा-हे महषें ! मेरे यहाँ सर्वत्र कुशल है--इसमें तो कुछ भो संशय नहीं है जिस मेरे विषय में भागंव श्रेष्ठ आप शमका

मनोर्वैवस्वतस्येमं सांप्रतं तु महात्मनः ।विस्तरेणानुपूर्व्या च निसर्गं शृणुत द्विजाः

पितृगन्धर्वयक्षैश्च रक्षोभूतमहोरगैः ।मानुषैः पशुभिश्चैव पक्षिभिः स्थावरैः सह

pitṛgandharvayakṣaiśca rakṣobhūtamahoragaiḥ / mānuṣaiḥ paśubhiścaiva pakṣibhiḥ sthāvaraiḥ saha

श्लोक 6

मन्वादिकं भविष्यान्तमाख्यानैर्बहुभिर्युतम् ।वक्ष्ये वैवस्वतं सर्गं नमस्कृत्य विवस्वते

manvādikaṃ bhaviṣyāntamākhyānairbahubhiryutam / vakṣye vaivasvataṃ sargaṃ namaskṛtya vivasvate

हे ब्रह्मन् ! धीरे-धीरे जल पी रहा है ओर बह आपके इस तपोवन में बिल्कुल ही निःशन्जु अर्थात् भय से रहित है

Apart from the discrepancy in number (here actually eight sons of Brahma are enumerated instead of seven under Sap tarsia), the names of the Saptar.sis of this Manvantara as given Supra I. ii 38. 26-29 are different viz. Visvamitra, Jamadagni, Bharadvaja, Saradvana (of Gautama gotra), Atri alias Brahma Kosa, Vasuman (son of Vasi§tha), Vatsara (son of Kafyapa). शापान्महेश्वरस्यासीत्प्रादुर्भावो महात्मनाम् ।भूयः सप्तर्षयस्त्वेवमुत्पन्नाः सप्त मानसाः

पुनः प्रवर्त्तितः सर्गो यथापूर्वं यथाक्रमम् ।तेषां प्रसूतिं वक्ष्यामि विशुद्धज्ञानकर्मणाम्

punaḥ pravarttitaḥ sargo yathāpūrvaṃ yathākramam / teṣāṃ prasūtiṃ vakṣyāmi viśuddhajñānakarmaṇām

समासव्यासयोगाभ्यां यथावदनुपूर्वशः ।येषामन्वयसंभूतैलर् एको ऽयं सचराचरः ।पुनरापूरितः सर्वो ग्रहनक्षत्रमण्डितः

samāsavyāsayogābhyāṃ yathāvadanupūrvaśaḥ / yeṣāmanvayasaṃbhūtailar eko 'yaṃ sacarācaraḥ / punarāpūritaḥ sarvo grahanakṣatramaṇḍitaḥ

वह अत्यन्त दुबली हरिणी भी अत्यधिक विश्राम के साथ अपने स्तन

All these, in their beautiful embodied forms arrived at the sacrifice when god Varuna assuming a physical body was performing the sacrifice. They were all endowed with beauty and splendour.

ऋषय ऊचुः कथं सप्तर्षयः पूर्वमुत्पन्नाः सप्त मनसाः ।पुत्रत्वे कल्पिताश्चैव तन्नो निगद सत्तम

ऊचुः सर्वे सदान्योन्यं जनलोके महार्षयः ।एत एव महाभागा वरुणे वितते ऽध्वरे

ūcuḥ sarve sadānyonyaṃ janaloke mahārṣayaḥ / eta eva mahābhāgā varuṇe vitate 'dhvare

सर्वे वयं प्रसूयामश्चाक्षुषस्यान्तरे मनोः ।पितामहात्मजाः सर्वे तन्नः श्रेयो भविष्यति

sarve vayaṃ prasūyāmaścākṣuṣasyāntare manoḥ / pitāmahātmajāḥ sarve tannaḥ śreyo bhaviṣyati

भूमि पर ऐसी दुर्लभ शक्ति अन्यत्र कहीं पर भी दिखलाई नहीं देती है

When the semen was once poured into the fire by way of Homa, Kavi came out of the flame. On seeing him coming out after splitting the flame, Hiranyagarbha (i.e. Brahma) said — "You are Bhrgu". Since it was said, so he became Bhrgu.

एवमुक्त्वा तु ते सर्वे चाक्षुषस्यान्तरे मनोः ।स्वायंभुवेन्तरे प्राप्ताः सृष्ट्यर्थं ते भवेन तु

evamuktvā tu te sarve cākṣuṣasyāntare manoḥ / svāyaṃbhuventare prāptāḥ sṛṣṭyarthaṃ te bhavena tu

हिन्दी अर्थ

रिपुओं को ध्वस्त करके अपने राज्य में प्राप्त हुआ हूँ

Hence Bhrgus are Varunas (those pertaining to the race of Varuna). That lord is his child.

श्लोक 19

जज्ञिरे ह पुनस्ते वै जनलोकादिहागताः ।देवस्य महतो यज्ञे वारुणीं बिभ्रतस्तनुम्

jajñire ha punaste vai janalokādihāgatāḥ / devasya mahato yajñe vāruṇīṃ bibhratastanum

हिन्दी अर्थ

भबहिहक्षा संजाता सापेक्षा भूगुपु गव

'It was I who bestowed the semen upon thee* Hence, let this second one be my (son).' "Let it be so", thus Sadasasfiati (the fire-god) was replied to by Brahma.

श्लोक 20

ब्रह्मणो जुह्वतः शुक्रमग्रौ पूर्वं प्रजेप्सया ।ऋषयो जज्ञिरे दीर्घे द्वितीयमिति नः श्रुतम्

brahmaṇo juhvataḥ śukramagrau pūrvaṃ prajepsayā / ṛṣayo jajñire dīrghe dvitīyamiti naḥ śrutam

नान्योऽपहर्तता लोकेऽस्मिन् ममेति त्वाभुपागतः

(The fourth sage) was born with overspreading hairs. Hence he is remembered as Pulastya. (The fifth sage) was born with long hairs. Hence he is remembered as Pulaha.

श्लोक 21

भृग्वङ्गिरा मरीचिश्च पुलस्त्यः पुलहः क्रतुः ।अत्रिश्चैव वसिष्ठश्च ह्यष्टौ ते ब्रह्मणः सुताः

bhṛgvaṅgirā marīciśca pulastyaḥ pulahaḥ kratuḥ / atriścaiva vasiṣṭhaśca hyaṣṭau te brahmaṇaḥ sutāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

उवाच भगवानोबं: सनिदेशमिदं वचः

(The sixth sage) was bom from among the Vasus artd was himself self-controlled and master of Vasu (wealth).

श्लोक 22

तथास्य वितते यज्ञे देवाः सर्वे समागताः ।यज्ञाङ्गानि च सर्वाणि वषठ्कारश्च मूर्त्तिमान्

tathāsya vitate yajñe devāḥ sarve samāgatāḥ / yajñāṅgāni ca sarvāṇi vaṣaṭhkāraśca mūrttimān

हिन्दी अर्थ

नियम्य सह भार्याभ्यां किचित्कालमिहावस ।

They are Amartas, Aprakasas and the renowned Jyotismants. Their king is Lord Yania who has got rid of all sins by means of Yamas (the famous ten qualities of restiaining influence such as celibacy, non-violence, non-stealth etc. (Brahmacarya, Ahimsa, Asteya, etc.)

मूर्त्तिमन्ति च सामानि यजूंषि च सहस्रशः ।ऋग्वेदश्चाभवत्तत्र यश्च क्रमविभूषितः

mūrttimanti ca sāmāni yajūṃṣi ca sahasraśaḥ / ṛgvedaścābhavattatra yaśca kramavibhūṣitaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

पत्नीभ्यां सह धर्मात्मा भक्तियुक्तश्चिरं तदा

The groups of sages (called) Vaikhanasas are earn- estly devoted to penance and higher Vedic learning.

श्लोक 24

यजुर्वेदश्च वृत्ताढ्य ओङ्कारवदनोज्ज्वलः ।स्थितो यज्ञार्थसंपृक्तः सूक्तब्राह्मणमन्त्रवान्

yajurvedaśca vṛttāḍhya oṅkāravadanojjvalaḥ / sthito yajñārthasaṃpṛktaḥ sūktabrāhmaṇamantravān

मेरे सभो अभार्य बस्य हैं और तीनों बगा में भी मैं यथायोग्य आदर प्राप्त करने बाला ह । आपके ही द्वारा जो उपदेश प्राप्त किया है उसी मार्ग से मैंने अच्छी तरह से राज्य का परिपालन किया है ।१४। इसी रीति से मैं

sāmavedaśca vṛttāḍhyaḥ sarvageyapuraḥ saraḥ / viśvāvasvādibhiḥ sārddhaṃ gandharvaiḥ saṃbhṛto 'bhavat

Let all of them resort to Brahman, the truthful and the greatest penance on the Earth. All of us and these are, O lord, your own progeny.

ब्रह्मवेदस्तथा घोरैः कृत्वा विधिभिरन्वितः ।प्रत्यङ्गिरसयोगैश्च द्विशरीरशिरो ऽभवत्

brahmavedastathā ghoraiḥ kṛtvā vidhibhiranvitaḥ / pratyaṅgirasayogaiśca dviśarīraśiro 'bhavat

लक्षणा विस्तराः स्तोभा निरुक्तस्वर भक्तयः ।आश्रयस्तु वषट्कारो निग्रहप्रग्रहावपि

lakṣaṇā vistarāḥ stobhā niruktasvara bhaktayaḥ / āśrayastu vaṣaṭkāro nigrahapragrahāvapi

और पितृगण को पिण्डो का देना दुष्कर सा हो रहा है ।१७। यही मुझे बड़ा भारी घोर दुःख है जो मेरे मन में बेठा हुआ है और निवारण के योग्य नहीं है। इस लोक में मेरे इस दुःख का अपहरण करने वाला आपको छोड़कर अन्य कोई भी नहीं है। अतएव मैं आपकी सन्निधि में प्राप्त हुआ हैं

श्लोक 28

दीप्तिमूर्त्तिरिलादेवी दिशश्चसदिगीश्वराः ।देवकन्याश्च पत्न्यश्च तथा मातर एव च

dīptimūrttirilādevī diśaścasadigīśvarāḥ / devakanyāśca patnyaśca tathā mātara eva ca

हिन्दी अर्थ

इस प्रकार से जब सगर तृप के द्वारा उस मुनि से कहा गया था तो वह मुनिं एक क्षण तक मन ही मन में सोचते हुए स्थित रहे ये और फिर औवं भगवान् ने निदेश पूर्वक यह वचन राजा से कहा था ।१९। आप नियमित रहकर अपनी दोनों पत्नियों के साथ कुछ समय तक यहों पर निवास करें।

āyayuḥ sarva evaite devasya yajato makhe / mūrtimantaḥ surūpākhyā varuṇasya vapurbhṛtaḥ

स्वयंभु वस्तु ता दृष्ट्वा रेतः समपतद्भुवि ।ब्रह्मर्षिभाविनोर्ऽथस्य विधानाच्च न संशयः

svayaṃbhu vastu tā dṛṣṭvā retaḥ samapatadbhuvi / brahmarṣibhāvinor'thasya vidhānācca na saṃśayaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

ही चिरकाल पर्यन्त वहाँ निवास किया था

They were Tvastr, Varatrin, San<ja and Marka. In splendour they resembled the Sun and in prowess they were as good as god Brahma.
