इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे श्राद्धकल्पो नाम विंशतितमो ऽध्यायः ॥ २०॥ समाप्तश्चायं श्राद्धकल्पः ।वसिष्ठ उवाच इत्थं प्रवर्त्तमानस्य जमदग्नेर्महात्मनः ।वर्षाणि कतिचिद्राजन्व्यतीयुरमितौजसः

iti śrībrahmāṇḍe mahāpurāṇe vāyuprokte madhyabhāge tṛtīya upoddhātapāde śrāddhakalpo nāma viṃśatitamo 'dhyāyaḥ // 20// samāptaścāyaṃ śrāddhakalpaḥ / vasiṣṭha uvāca itthaṃ pravarttamānasya jamadagnermahātmanaḥ / varṣāṇi katicidrājanvyatīyuramitaujasaḥ

हे महाराज ! आपके युद्ध में परों के बल के हरण करने वाली विद्या भगवान् शिव ने ही प्रदान की है इसलिए आपकी सदा ही विजय होगी ।५७। दानवों के नायक भण्ड ने उसके वाकय को मान लिया था और सेनाओं के साथ वह निकल कर हैमबत के तट पर चला मया था ।५८। जगम्बिका

रामो ऽपि नृपशार्दूल सर्वधर्मभृतां वरः ।वेदवेदाङ्गतत्त्वज्ञः सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः

rāmo 'pi nṛpaśārdūla sarvadharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ / vedavedāṅgatattvajñaḥ sarvaśāstraviśāradaḥ

अध्याय ५९

श्लोक 3

पित्रोश्चकार शुश्रूषां विनीतात्मा महामतिः ।प्रीतिं च निजचेष्टाभिरन्वहं पर्यवर्त्तयत्

pitroścakāra śuśrūṣāṃ vinītātmā mahāmatiḥ / prītiṃ ca nijaceṣṭābhiranvahaṃ paryavarttayat

Touching the feet of his parents with his head, that noble scion of the family of Bhrgu, with his palms folded in reverence, addressed these words with great humility.

अध्याय ५९

श्लोक 4

इत्थं प्रवर्त्तमानस्य वर्षाणि कतिचिन्नृप ।पित्रोः शुश्रूषयानैषीद्रामो मतिमतां वरः

itthaṃ pravarttamānasya varṣāṇi katicinnṛpa / pitroḥ śuśrūṣayānaiṣīdrāmo matimatāṃ varaḥ

श्लोक 5

स कदाचिन्महातेजाः पितामह गुहं प्रति ।गन्तुं व्यवसितो राजन्दैवेन च नियोजितः

sa kadācinmahātejāḥ pitāmaha guhaṃ prati / gantuṃ vyavasito rājandaivena ca niyojitaḥ

से बहुत ही व्ययित हो गये ये और उन्होंने समस्त क्रियाओं को छोड़ दिया या

For a long time I have been eager to see my grand- fat her. Hence, with your permission, I shall go to him.

श्लोक 6

निपीड्य शिरसा पित्रोश्चरणौ भृगुपुङ्गवः ।उवाच प्राञ्जलिर्भूतवा सप्रश्रयमिदं वचः

nipīḍya śirasā pitroścaraṇau bhṛgupuṅgavaḥ / uvāca prāñjalirbhūtavā sapraśrayamidaṃ vacaḥ

तानुवाच ततः शक्रो हैत्येन्द्रो्यमिहागत: ।

English

My loving grand-mother wishes to see me. She has invited me eagerly many times through various persons.

कञ्चिदर्थमहं तात मातरं त्वां च साम्प्रतम् ।विज्ञापयितुमिच्छामि मम तच्छ्रोतुमर्हथः

kañcidarthamahaṃ tāta mātaraṃ tvāṃ ca sāmpratam / vijñāpayitumicchāmi mama tacchrotumarhathaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

यजामः परमां शक्ति महामासेवंयं सुराः

Indeed, seeing one's parents and grand-father is very pleasing. Hence, permit me to go to him."

श्लोक 8

पितामहमहं द्रष्टुमुत्कण्ठितमनाश्चिरम् ।तस्मात्तत्पार्श्वमधुना गमिष्ये वामनुज्ञया

pitāmahamahaṃ draṣṭumutkaṇṭhitamanāściram / tasmāttatpārśvamadhunā gamiṣye vāmanujñayā

हिन्दी अर्थ

ब्रह्मभूता भविष्यामो भोक्ष्यामो बा त्रिविष्टपम् ।

"On hearing these words which he uttered with emotional excitement, both of them became extremely delighted. Their eyes became filled with tears of joy.

आहूतश्चासकृत्तात सोत्कण्ठं प्रीयमाणया ।पितामह्या बहुमुखैरिच्छन्त्या मम दर्शनम्

āhūtaścāsakṛttāta sotkaṇṭhaṃ prīyamāṇayā / pitāmahyā bahumukhairicchantyā mama darśanam

हिन्दी अर्थ

एवमुक्तास्तु ते सर्वे देवाः सेन्द्रपुरोगमाः

English

They embraced that highly fortunate (dignified) son and lovingly sniffed at his head. After blessing and congratulating their dear son, they said thus:

पितॄन्पितामहस्यापि प्रियमेव प्रदर्शनम् ।सदीयं तेन तत्पार्श्वं गन्तुं मामनुजानत

pitṝnpitāmahasyāpi priyameva pradarśanam / sadīyaṃ tena tatpārśvaṃ gantuṃ māmanujānata

हृतेषु सवंगांसेषु पादेषु च करेषु च

"Dear son, go to your grand-father's house with pleasure for meeting and delighting your grand- father and grand-mother.

श्लोक 11

वसिष्ठ उवाच इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा संभ्रान्तं समुदीरितम् ।हर्षेण महता युक्तौ साश्रुनेत्रौ बभूवतुः

vasiṣṭha uvāca iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā saṃbhrāntaṃ samudīritam / harṣeṇa mahatā yuktau sāśrunetrau babhūvatuḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

होतुमिच्छतसु देवेषु कलेवरमशेषतः ।

English

After going there stay in their house for some time, serving them duly and delighting them, O dear son.

श्लोक 12

तमालिङ्ग्य महाभागं मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्राय सादरम् ।अभिनन्द्याशिषा तात ह्युभौ ताविदमाहतुः

tamāliṅgya mahābhāgaṃ mūrdhnyupāghrāya sādaram / abhinandyāśiṣā tāta hyubhau tāvidamāhatuḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

तन्मध्यतः समुदभूच्चक्राकारमनुत्तमम् ।

English

O highly fortunate one, do not stay there for a very long time. With their permission come back safe and sound. Of course, you will be eager to see us again.

अध्याय ५९

श्लोक 13

पितामहगृहं तात प्रयाहि त्वं यथासुखम् ।पितामहपितामह्योः प्रीतये दर्शनाय च

pitāmahagṛhaṃ tāta prayāhi tvaṃ yathāsukham / pitāmahapitāmahyoḥ prītaye darśanāya ca

तन्मध्ये तु महादेवीमुदयाकंसमग्रभाम्

We cannot remain even for half a moment without seeing our dear son. Hence, do not stay in your grand-father's abode for a very long time.

श्लोक 14

तत्र गत्वा यथान्यायं तं शुश्रूषा परायणः ।कञ्चित्कालं तयोर्वत्स प्रीतये वस तद्गृहे

tatra gatvā yathānyāyaṃ taṃ śuśrūṣā parāyaṇaḥ / kañcitkālaṃ tayorvatsa prītaye vasa tadgṛhe

इसके पश्चात् इन्द्र देब ने उन देवगणो से कहा था कि यह देत्येन्द यहाँ पर आ गया है ओर इसको इन सभी लोग भी जीतने में युद्ध में अस- मर्थ है ॥६४ अगरे हम सब लोग यहाँ से भागते भी हैं तो भी हमारी कहीं पर भी अन्य कोई गति नहीं है । एक योजनके विस्तार वाला कुण्ड बनाकर

श्लोक 15

स्थित्वा नातिचिरं कालं तयोर्भूयो ऽप्यनुशय ।अत्रागच्छ महाभाग क्षेमेणास्मद्दिदृक्षया

sthitvā nāticiraṃ kālaṃ tayorbhūyo 'pyanuśaya / atrāgaccha mahābhāga kṣemeṇāsmaddidṛkṣayā

हिन्दी अर्थ

जो बहुत ही अच्छा और सुन्दर हो हम सब यज्ञ का कार्य सम्पन्न करें

After entering the fascinating hermitage O leading king, Rama saw in front of him, Rcika his grandfather sitting on his seat.

अध्याय ५९

श्लोक 16

क्षणार्द्धमपि शक्ताः स्थो न विना पुत्रदर्शनम् ।तस्मात्पितामह गृहे न चिरात्स्थातुमर्हसि

kṣaṇārddhamapi śaktāḥ stho na vinā putradarśanam / tasmātpitāmaha gṛhe na cirātsthātumarhasi

हिन्दी अर्थ

महायाग का जो भी बिधान है उसी से हुताशन का प्रणिधान करें । हम सब सुरगण महा मांसो से इस परमा शक्ति का ही इस समय में यजन करे

"Who is this boy honoured (i.e. endowed with) all the requisite auspicious characteristics. He appears to be a huge mass of austerities. Although still a boy, he appears to be very powerful, due to his majestic demeanour coupled with humility."

श्लोक 17

तदाज्ञयाथ वा पुत्र प्रपितामहसन्निधिम् ।गतो ऽपि शीघ्रमागच्छ क्रमेण तदनुज्ञया

tadājñayātha vā putra prapitāmahasannidhim / gato 'pi śīghramāgaccha krameṇa tadanujñayā

हम सब लोग ऐसा करने से ब्रह्मभूत हो जाँयगे अथवा स्वर्ग लोक का भोग करेंगे । इस प्रकार से जव सब देवों से कहा गया था तो इन्द्र ही जिनमें अग्रणी या वे सभी देवगण प्रस्तुत हो गये ये ।६७। फिर उन्होने मन्त्रों के द्वारा काट-काट कर विधि पूर्वक मांसों से हवन किया था। शरीरों के

वसिष्ठ उवाच इत्युक्तस्तौ परिक्रम्य प्रणम्य च महामतिः ।पितरावप्यनुज्ञाप्य पितामहगृहं ततः

vasiṣṭha uvāca ityuktastau parikramya praṇamya ca mahāmatiḥ / pitarāvapyanujñāpya pitāmahagṛhaṃ tataḥ

समस्त मांस का हवन करने पर तथा चरणों और करों का भी होम करने

The intelligent sage Rama reported his name and lineage. With great joy, he touched the feet of his grand-father and grand-mother with his head, as well as the hands and paid respects to them thus.

अध्याय ५९

श्लोक 19

स गत्वा भृगुवर्यस्य ऋचीकस्य महात्मनः ।प्रविवेशाश्रमं रामो मुनिशिष्योपशोभितम्

sa gatvā bhṛguvaryasya ṛcīkasya mahātmanaḥ / praviveśāśramaṃ rāmo muniśiṣyopaśobhitam

हिन्दी अर्थ

पर जब उन्होंने अपना सम्पूर्ण शरीर ही हवन कर देने की इच्छा को थी तो उसी समय एक परम उत्तम तेज का पुञ्ज प्रादुभू'त हुआ था

Then both of them were delighted in their minds. They lifted up the excellent grandson and showered him with blessings. They congratulated him severally.

स्वाध्यायघोषैर्विपुलैः सर्वतः प्रतिनादितम् ।प्रशान्तवैर सत्त्वाढ्यं सर्वसत्त्वमनोहरम्

svādhyāyaghoṣairvipulaiḥ sarvataḥ pratināditam / praśāntavaira sattvāḍhyaṃ sarvasattvamanoharam

स प्रविश्यश्रमं रम्यमृचीकं स्थितमासने ।ददर्श रामो राजेन्द्र स पितामहमग्रतः

sa praviśyaśramaṃ ramyamṛcīkaṃ sthitamāsane / dadarśa rāmo rājendra sa pitāmahamagrataḥ

उस तेज के पुञज के मध्य से एक चक्र के समान आकार का पदार्थ समुत्पन्न हुआ था और उसके मध्य में समुदित सूर्ये के सहश प्रभा से समन्वित देवी प्रकट हुई थी

ctDear boy, we hope your parents are quite well. Arc your brothers quite well? We hope you sustain yourself without any undue strain."

अध्याय ५९

श्लोक 22

जाज्वल्यमानं तपसा धिष्ण्यस्थमिव पावकम् ।उपासितं सत्यवत्या यथा दक्षिणायऽध्वरम्

jājvalyamānaṃ tapasā dhiṣṇyasthamiva pāvakam / upāsitaṃ satyavatyā yathā dakṣiṇāya'dhvaram

हिन्दी अर्थ

जगदुञ्जीवनकरीं ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवात्मिकाम् ।

English

Thus, O great king, Rama stayed in the house of the parents of his father delighted at the good things that issued forth, due to the affection of those two elderly persons.

श्लोक 23

स्वसमीपमुपायान्तं राममालोक्य तौ नृप ।सुचिरं तं विमर्शेतां समाज्ञापूर्वदर्शनौ

svasamīpamupāyāntaṃ rāmamālokya tau nṛpa / suciraṃ taṃ vimarśetāṃ samājñāpūrvadarśanau

हिन्दी अर्थ

जपाकुसृमसंकाशां दाडिमीकुसुमांवराम् ।

English

He stayed there for a few months giving delight to the minds and eyes of all loving beings and spending time rendering service ( to his grand-father and grand-mother) eagerly.

को ऽयमेष तपोराशिः सर्वलत्रणपूजितः ।बालो ऽयं बलवान्भातिगांभीर्यात्प्रश्रयेण च

ko 'yameṣa taporāśiḥ sarvalatraṇapūjitaḥ / bālo 'yaṃ balavānbhātigāṃbhīryātpraśrayeṇa ca

सर्वाभरणसंयुक्तां श्ज्धारेकरसालयाम् ।

English

Thereafter, the noble-minded scion of the family of Bhrgus took leave of both of them, O king, and desired to go to the hermitage that was the resort of the parents of his grand- father.

श्लोक 25

एवं तयोश्चिन्तयतोः सहर्षं हृदि कौतुकात् ।आससाद शनै रामः समीपे विनयान्वितः

evaṃ tayościntayatoḥ saharṣaṃ hṛdi kautukāt / āsasāda śanai rāmaḥ samīpe vinayānvitaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

कृपातरंगितापांगनयनालोककौमुदीम् ।

English

After duly prostrating at the feet of Cyavana1?) (Rama) of excessive austerities went to the hermitage ofBhrgu on being permitted by him (i.e. Cyavana) with great delight.

श्लोक 26

स्वनामगोत्रे मतिमानुक्त्वा पित्रोर्मुदान्वितः ।संस्पृशंश्चरणौ मूर्ध्ना हस्ताभ्यां चाभ्यवादयत्

svanāmagotre matimānuktvā pitrormudānvitaḥ / saṃspṛśaṃścaraṇau mūrdhnā hastābhyāṃ cābhyavādayat

हिन्दी अर्थ

पाशांकु शेक्षुकोद डपंच बाणलसत्कारम्

English

After proceeding ahead he saw the penance-grove of Bhrgu the chief of all sages surrounded by sages of tranquil minds.

श्लोक 27

ततस्तौ प्रीतमनसौ समुथाप्य च सत्तमम् ।आशीर्भिरभिनन्देतां पृथक् पृथगुभावपि

tatastau prītamanasau samuthāpya ca sattamam / āśīrbhirabhinandetāṃ pṛthak pṛthagubhāvapi

हिन्दी अर्थ

तां विलोक्य महादेवी देवा: सर्वे सवासवा: ।

English

The hermitage had been rid of all kinds of sins due to the fragrance of smoke arising from the sacred fires; while Ahutis (ghee-offerings) were being oblated to the accompani- ment of chantings of Mantras during the performance of Homos. The fragrance was wafted everywhere within the forest (by gentle breezes thus wiping out all sins thereof).

श्लोक 28

तमाश्लिष्याङ्कमारोप्य हर्णाश्रुप्लुतलोचनौ ।वीक्षन्तौ तन्मुखांभोजं परं हर्षमवापतुः

tamāśliṣyāṅkamāropya harṇāśruplutalocanau / vīkṣantau tanmukhāṃbhojaṃ paraṃ harṣamavāpatuḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

प्रणेमुमु दितात्मानो भूयोभूयोऽखिलात्मिकाम्

English

On all sides, O king, the pcnancc-grovc was rendered splendid by the handsome sons of sages who were fetching sacrificial twigs and Darbha grass and who were embellished with their stavas, girdles and antelope skins.

श्लोक 29

ततः सुखोपविष्टं तमात्मवंशसमुद्वहम् ।अनामयमपृच्छेतां तावुभौ दंपती तदा

tataḥ sukhopaviṣṭaṃ tamātmavaṃśasamudvaham / anāmayamapṛcchetāṃ tāvubhau daṃpatī tadā

हिन्दी अर्थ

तया विलोकिताः सद्यस्ते सर्वे विगतज्वराः ।

English

Here and there the daughters of sages could be seen moving about with vessels (and baskets) filled with water and flowers and rendering those places beautiful.

श्लोक 30

पितरौ ते कुशलिनो वत्स किंभ्रातरस्तथा ।अनायासेन ते वृत्तिर्वर्तते चाथ कर्हिचित्

pitarau te kuśalino vatsa kiṃbhrātarastathā / anāyāsena te vṛttirvartate cātha karhicit

वुष्टुवृश्च महादेवीमंविकामखिलाथंदाम्

Herds of hinds along with their fawns were taking rest in the shade of trees bordering the court-yard of the huts. They were free from fear about their safety, due to their faith and confidence in the sanctity of the penance grove.

श्लोक 31

समस्ताभ्यां ततो राजन्नाचचक्षे यथोदितः ।तथा स्वानुगतं पित्रोर्भ्रातॄणां चैव चेष्टितम्

samastābhyāṃ tato rājannācacakṣe yathoditaḥ / tathā svānugataṃ pitrorbhrātṝṇāṃ caiva ceṣṭitam

एवं तयोर्महाराज सत्प्रीतिजनितैगुणैः ।प्रीयमाणो ऽवसद्रामः पितुः पित्रोर्न्निवेशने

evaṃ tayormahārāja satprītijanitaiguṇaiḥ / prīyamāṇo 'vasadrāmaḥ pituḥ pitrornniveśane

athānujñāpya tau rājanbhṛguvaryo mahāmanāḥ / pitāmahagurorgantumiyeṣāśrayamāśramam

कृपा से तरंगित अपांगो वाले नेत्र से प्रकाश करने वाली वह कौमुदी थी । उसके करों में पाग-अंकुश-इक्ु-को दण्ड ओर पांच बाण थे जिससे बह परम सुशोभित थी ।७३। उस महादेवी का दर्शन करके इन्द्र के सहित समस्त देवगणों ने बारम्बार प्रसन्न मनों वाले होकर उस अखिलात्मिका के

(Defective text). He was seated cross-legged with the right leg supported by the left shank (from ankle to the knee) and vice versa. The leading sage had got his body covered with Togapaffa (the cloth used to cover the body of ascetics while in abstract meditation). The right palm was brilliant like a lotus expressing Mudrd (Gesture) of explanation by means of the Angers and the palm. His radiant left hand had been placed above the Togapaffa.
