इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे एकविंशति तमौध्यायः ॥ २१॥ वसिष्ठ उवाच इत्येवमुक्तो भृगुणा तथेत्युक्त्वा प्रणम्य च ।रामस्तेनाभ्यनुज्ञातश्चकार गमने मनः

iti śrībrahmāṇḍe mahāpurāṇe vāyuprokte madhyabhāge tṛtīya upoddhātapāde ekaviṃśati tamaudhyāyaḥ // 21// vasiṣṭha uvāca ityevamukto bhṛguṇā tathetyuktvā praṇamya ca / rāmastenābhyanujñātaścakāra gamane manaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

आकाश को धारण किया है जिसमें सविता समुदित होता है उस महादेवी

He duly circumambulated Bhrgu and Khyati and bowed to them. He was embraced and greeted with blessings by both of them.

भृगुं ख्यातिं च विधिवत्परिक्रम्य प्रणम्यच ।परिष्वक्तस्तथा ताभ्यामाशीर्भिराभिनन्दितः

bhṛguṃ khyātiṃ ca vidhivatparikramya praṇamyaca / pariṣvaktastathā tābhyāmāśīrbhirābhinanditaḥ

यह अन्त का रापत हा जाता टं उत्त दवा के (लए बार-बार नमस्कार निव- दित है ।२३। आप रजो रूपा भवा के लिए मेरा नमस्कार है तथा सात्विक संस्थिता के लिए नमस्कार है । तमोरूपहरा आपको नमस्कार है। निगुण स्वरूपा शिवा आपको प्रणाम है ॥२४ आप इस सम्पूर्ण जात् की एक ही

Thereafter, at the behest of his sire, Rama of exalted mind, went to the Himavan, the most excellent among moun- tains, along the path mentioned by Bhrgu.

अध्याय ६०

श्लोक 3

मुनींश्च तान्नमस्कृत्य तैः सर्वैरनुमोदितः ।निश्चक्रमाश्रमात्तस्मात्तपसे कृतनिश्चयः

munīṃśca tānnamaskṛtya taiḥ sarvairanumoditaḥ / niścakramāśramāttasmāttapase kṛtaniścayaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

माता हैं ऐसी आपको बारम्बार नमस्कार है । इस जगत् की आप ही एक- मात्र पिता अर्थात् जनक हैं ऐसी आपके लिए अनेक बार नमस्कार हैं। आपका यह सम्पूर्ण स्वल्थ तन्त्र है तथा आप अखिल यन्त्र रूपा हैं ऐसी आप की सेवा में अनेकशः हमारा प्रणाम निवेदित है ।२५। आप लोक गुरु

प्रधान हैं ऐसी अखिल वाग् की विभूति के लिए हमारा बार-बार प्रणाम है । लक्ष्मी के लिए तथा जगत की एक तुष्टि के लिए हमारा बारम्बार नमस्कार है । है शाम्मवि ! सर्वशक्ति आपको प्रणाम है ।२६। है अम्ब ! आपका प्रभाव अत्युत्तम है तथा अनादि मध्यान्त हैं--अपाञ्च भौतिक है--

सो ऽतीत्य विविधान्देशान्पर्वतान्सरितस्तथा ।वनानि मुनिमुख्यानामावासांश्चात्यगाच्छनैः

so 'tītya vividhāndeśānparvatānsaritastathā / vanāni munimukhyānāmāvāsāṃścātyagācchanaiḥ

बाणी मन से अगम्य है और अप्रतक्यं वैभव बाला है। वह रूप तथा द्वन्द पे रहित है एवं दृष्टिगोचर नहीं है, मैं किस प्रकार से इसका वर्णेन करू ।२७। है विश्वेश्वरि ! है विश्व वन्दिते ! है वेदों के स्वरूप बाली ! आप सन्न होइये । है मायामयि ! है मन्त्रों के विग्रह वाली ! है सर्वेश्वरि ! हे

After reaching that place, he saw the excellent mountain abounding in different trees and creepers. It appeared to scrape the sky by its huge peaks.

श्लोक 6

तत्रतत्र निवासेषु मुनीनां निवसन्पथि ।तीर्थेषु क्षेत्रमुख्येषु निवसन्वा ययौ शनैः

tatratatra nivāseṣu munīnāṃ nivasanpathi / tīrtheṣu kṣetramukhyeṣu nivasanvā yayau śanaiḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

इति स्तुत्वा महादेवीं देवां: सर्वे सवासवाः ।

In some places the forests were blazing due to the fire originating from the friction of dry trees clashing together on account of violent gusts of wind. The flame was further enhanced due to the blowing winds.

अतीत्य सुबहून्देशान्पश्यन्नपि मनोरमान् ।आससादच लश्रेष्ठं हिमवन्तमनुत्तमम्

atītya subahūndeśānpaśyannapi manoramān / āsasādaca laśreṣṭhaṃ himavantamanuttamam

हिन्दी अर्थ

ततः प्रसन्ना सा देवी प्रणतं वीक्ष्य वासवम् ।

English

In some places, the sun-stone came into contact with the rays of the sun and began to emit fires. Due to these fires the snow and bitumen got melted and the water thus formed quelled the forest fires.

स गत्वा पर्वतवरं नानाद्रुमलतास्थितम् ।ददर्श विपुलैः शृङ्गैरुल्लिखन्तमिवांबरम्

sa gatvā parvatavaraṃ nānādrumalatāsthitam / dadarśa vipulaiḥ śṛṅgairullikhantamivāṃbaram

श्लोक 10

मरुत्संघट्टनाघृष्टनीरसांघ्रिपजन्मना ।सानिलेनानलेनोच्छैर्दह्यमानं नवं क्वचित्

marutsaṃghaṭṭanāghṛṣṭanīrasāṃghripajanmanā / sānilenānalenocchairdahyamānaṃ navaṃ kvacit

हिन्दी अर्थ

निर्भया म् दिता: सन्तु सर्वे देवगणास्तथा । ये स्तोष्यन्ति च मां भक्तूया स्तवेनानेन मानवाः ॥

English

In some places, the forests were brightened by groups of Siddhas who had been wet due to snowfall and so were bask- ing in the early morning sunlight over the rocks, at the feet of the mountain.

क्वचिद्रविकरामर्शज्वलदर्केपलाग्निभिः ।द्रवद्धिमाशिलाजातुजलशान्तदवानलम्

kvacidravikarāmarśajvaladarkepalāgnibhiḥ / dravaddhimāśilājātujalaśāntadavānalam

इति लब्धवरा देवा दे वेंद्रोऽपि महाबलः

In some places, the caves were filled with the piteous cries of herds of deer that had been agitated when hyaenas jumped up after coming out of the caves.

स्फटिकाञ्जनदुर्वर्णस्वर्णराशिप्रभाकरैः ।स्फुरत्परस्परच्छायाशरैर्द्दीप्तवनं क्वचित्

sphaṭikāñjanadurvarṇasvarṇarāśiprabhākaraiḥ / sphuratparasparacchāyāśarairddīptavanaṃ kvacit

आमोद' परमं जग्मुस्तां विलोक्य मुहुम् हुः

In some places the huge shining rocks and sloping sides of the trees had been scraped suddenly when the leaders of the herds of boars and tigers fought each other.

उपत्यकशिलापृष्ठवालातपनिषेविभिः ।तुषारक्लिन्नसिद्धौघौरुद्भासितवनं क्वचित्

kvacidarkāśusaṃbhinnaścāmīkaraśilāśritaiḥ / yakṣaughairbhāsitopāntaṃ viśadbhirivapāvakam

बरदान देने वाली देवी ने उसको वरदान देने के लिए कहा था ।३०। इन्द्र ने कहा--हे कल्याणि ! यदि आप मुझ पर सुप्रसन्न हैं तो मैं तो देत्येख से पोड़ित हूँ । मुझे यही वरदान देवें कि मेरा दुघंर जीवित होवे । हम लोग आपकी शरण में समागत हैं ।३१ श्री देवो ने कहा--मै स्वयं ही देत्य कुल

अनुग्रह से पुत्र-मित्र और कलत्र से सुसम्पन्न होंगे । इस रीति से देवगण और महान बलवान देवेन्द्र भी वर प्राप्त करने वाले होगये थे ओर वारम्वार उस जगदम्बा का दर्शन करके परमाधिक आनन्द को प्राप्त हो गये थे

In some places, the female elephants and tuskers were found sporting about in the bower-like bushes on the mountain. In some places the excited elephants in rut were seen pursuing the she-elcphants throughout the forests.

बृंहितश्रवणामर्षान्मातं गानभिधावताम् ।सिंहानां चरणक्षुण्णनखभिन्नोपरं क्वचित्

bṛṃhitaśravaṇāmarṣānmātaṃ gānabhidhāvatām / siṃhānāṃ caraṇakṣuṇṇanakhabhinnoparaṃ kvacit

हिन्दी अर्थ

आजगाम ततो विष्णुरारूढो विनतासुतम् ।

English

The mountain Himalaya had hundreds of caves filled with gusts of wind formed by the breaths of sleeping lions. In the forests of that mountain deer wandered about despite their great fear being suspicious of danger.

श्लोक 20

सहसा निपतत्सिंहनखनिर्भिन्नमस्तकैः ।गजैराक्रन्दनादेन पूर्यमामं वनं क्वचित्

sahasā nipatatsiṃhanakhanirbhinnamastakaiḥ / gajairākrandanādena pūryamāmaṃ vanaṃ kvacit

हिन्दी अर्थ

देवर्षयो नारदाद्याः समाजम्मुमहेश्वरीम् ।

English

Herds of Camari dear moved about here and there very slowly while sporting, because they were afraid of their tail getting split as a result of being entangled in the thorny bushes.

अष्टपादबलाकृष्टकेसरा दारुणाखैः ।भेद्यमानाखिलशिलागंभीरकुहरं क्वचित्

aṣṭapādabalākṛṣṭakesarā dāruṇākhaiḥ / bhedyamānākhilaśilāgaṃbhīrakuharaṃ kvacit

आययुस्तां महादेवीं सर्वे चाप्सरसां गणाः

The ground had been marked by the red-lac-dyed wet feet of the sylvan deities moving about here and there.

संरब्धा नेकशबरप्रसक्तैरृयूथपैः ।इतरेतरसंमर्दं विप्रभग्नदृषत्क्वचित्

saṃrabdhā nekaśabaraprasaktairṛyūthapaiḥ / itaretarasaṃmardaṃ viprabhagnadṛṣatkvacit

विश्वावमुप्र भृतयो गन्धर्वाश्चैव यक्षकाः।

English

All round activities of dance had been initiated by groups of peacocks and pea-hens, whose notes were musically sweet and whose plumes had been raised up and spread.

गिरिकुञ्जेषु संक्रीडत्करिणीमद्विपं क्वचित् ।करेणुमाद्रवन्मत्तगजाकलितकाननम्

ब्रह्मणाथ समादिष्टो विश्वकर्मा विशांपतिः

The region bordering upon the mountain had been abounding in the Mango trees and they were filled with the tumultuous cooing of male cuckoos that had be- come excessively elated by tasting the juice of the season Spring.

स्वपत्सिंहमुखश्वासमरुत्पुर्मदरीशतम् ।गहनेषु गुरुत्राससाशङ्कविहरन्मृगम्

svapatsiṃhamukhaśvāsamarutpurmadarīśatam / gahaneṣu gurutrāsasāśaṅkaviharanmṛgam

हिन्दी अर्थ

चकार नगरं दिव्यं ययामरपुरं तथा ।

English

The mountain had been resonant with the musical notes of bees that had been maddened by imbibing nectar from different kinds of flowers. The forests therein had become deafened, due to the chirping sounds of many birds.

कण्टाकश्लिष्टलाङ्गूललोमत्रुटनकातरैः ।क्रीडितं चमरीयूथैर्मन्दमन्दविचारिभिः

kaṇṭākaśliṣṭalāṅgūlalomatruṭanakātaraiḥ / krīḍitaṃ camarīyūthairmandamandavicāribhiḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

विद्याधिदेवता श्यामा समाजग्मतुरंबिकाम् ।

English

The surface of the ground had become filled and thickly bedecked with a number of fresh flowers wet with honey. They had been blown therein by the breezes of the forest and scattered about;

गिरिकन्दरसंसक्तकिन्नरीसमुदीरितैः ।सतालनादैरुदिनैर्भृताशेषदिशामुखम्

girikandarasaṃsaktakinnarīsamudīritaiḥ / satālanādairudinairbhṛtāśeṣadiśāmukham

हिन्दी अर्थ

सिद्ध यो ह्मणिमाद्याश्च योगिन्यश्चैव कोटिशः ।

The region all round had been deafened by the loud sound of springs and water-falls that cascaded down from great heights upon narrow defiles abounding in rugged rocky pebbles.

अरण्यदेवतानां च चरेतीनामितस्ततः ।अलक्तकरसक्लिन्नचरणाङ्कितभूतलम्

araṇyadevatānāṃ ca caretīnāmitastataḥ / alaktakarasaklinnacaraṇāṅkitabhūtalam

mayūrakekirīvṛndaiḥ saṃgīta madhurasvaraiḥ / pravṛttanṛttaṃ parito vitatodagrabarhibhiḥ

दर्शनार्थ आ गये ये ।१-२। नारद आदि देवधिगण महेश्वरी के समीप में समागत हो गये ये। सभी अप्सराओं के समुदाय भी महादेवी के दर्शना आ गये ये ।३। विश्वावसु आदि गन्ध्रवं ओर यक्ष भी वहाँ पर आये थे। ब्रह्माजी के द्वारा आदेश पाकर विशांपति विश्वकर्मा ने एक दिव्य तगर की

He worshipped the lord of Devas, O king, with intense mental concentration. During the rainy season he had neither abode nor a shelter. During the winter he resorted to chill water. During the summer he stayed among five fires (i.e. four fires on four sides and the blazing sun above). He performed penance in this manner for a long time.

रचना की थी जेसा कि साक्षात अमर पुर ही होवे । इसके पश्चात् सब

The sage of great self-control rendered the vital airs steady within the physical body by means of PrdQ&ydma (Breath-control). He was able to seat himself in the lotus pose with great ease. He observed perfect silence. The great sage kept his mind steady and stabilised.

भूतार्त्तवरसास्वादमाद्यत्पुंस्कोकिलारवैः ।आकुलीकृतपर्यन्तसहकारवनान्तरम्

bhūtārttavarasāsvādamādyatpuṃskokilāravaiḥ / ākulīkṛtaparyantasahakāravanāntaram

ब्राह् आदि समस्त माठृगण अपने-अपने भूतगणों क॑ साथ समावृत होकर वहाँ पर आयी थीं ।४-६। अणिमा-महिमा आदि आठ सिद्धियाँ और करोड़ों योगिनियों वहाँ पर आ गयी थीं । भरव और केत्रपाल-महाशास्ता गणों के अग्रणी वहाँ समागत हुए

nānāpuṣpāsavonmādyadbhṛṅgasaṃgītanāditam / anekavihagārāvabadhirīkṛtakānanam

महागणेश्‍्वरः स्कन्दो बटुको वोरभद्रकः ।

Devoted to the practice of Praty&hdra (withdrawing the sense-organs from external stimulii, sensual feelings and objects), he controlled the sense-organs. Self-possessed that he was, he could stabilise the usually unsteady mind by means of Dh&raqd (Retention of perception of the supreme deity).

श्लोक 32

मधुद्रवार्द्राविरलप्रत्यग्रकुसुमोत्करैः ।वनान्तमारुताकीर्णैरलङ्कृतमहीतलम्

madhudravārdrāviralapratyagrakusumotkaraiḥ / vanāntamārutākīrṇairalaṅkṛtamahītalam

हिन्दी अर्थ

आगव्य ते महादेवीं तुष्टुवु: प्रणतास्तदा

English

He had the vision of Parameivara, the lord of Devas, by means of meditation. His inner mind was in a stable quiet state. He was a Maitra ( an exalted Brahmana who had arrived at the highest state of human perfection due to close contact with the supreme Being). He was free from all sorts of obstacles.

उपरिष्टान्निपततां विषमोपलसंकटे ।निर्झराणां महारावैः समन्ताद्बधिरीकृतम्

upariṣṭānnipatatāṃ viṣamopalasaṃkaṭe / nirjharāṇāṃ mahārāvaiḥ samantādbadhirīkṛtam
