अध्याय २२९
श्रुतं फलं गीतिकाया अस्माभिः सुप्रजागरे कृष्णस्य येन चाण्डालो गतो ऽसौ परमां गतिम्
śrutaṃ phalaṃ gītikāyā asmābhiḥ suprajāgare kṛṣṇasya yena cāṇḍālo gato 'sau paramāṃ gatim
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Then Devas spoke to Hari and me. Thereupon, I entered in meditation, saw the cause and spoke to them:
अध्याय २२९
यथा विष्णौ भवेद् भक्तिस् तन् नो ब्रूहि महामते तपसा कर्मणा येन श्रोतुम् इच्छाम सांप्रतम्
yathā viṣṇau bhaved bhaktis tan no brūhi mahāmate tapasā karmaṇā yena śrotum icchāma sāṃpratam
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
"This sacrifice is not concluded on account of certain obstacles created by Vinayaka. Hence, let Devas eulogize the primordial lord Vinayaka."
अध्याय २२९
शृणुध्वं मुनिशार्दूलाः प्रवक्ष्याम्य् अनुपूर्वशः यथा कृष्णे भवेद् भक्तिः पुरुषस्य महाफला
śṛṇudhvaṃ muniśārdūlāḥ pravakṣyāmy anupūrvaśaḥ yathā kṛṣṇe bhaved bhaktiḥ puruṣasya mahāphalā
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
After saying "So be it" Devas took their holy plunge in Gautami. On the banks of the river Devas eulogized Ganesvara, the primordial lord.
अध्याय २२९
संसारे ऽस्मिन् महाघोरे सर्वभूतभयावहे महामोहकरे नॄणां नानादुःखशताकुले
saṃsāre 'smin mahāghore sarvabhūtabhayāvahe mahāmohakare nṝṇāṃ nānāduḥkhaśatākule
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
May that VighneSvara, son of Ambika, bestow upon us freedom from obstacles immediately, in this great sacrifice. If he is meditated upon, the heart wishes of all embodied beings become fulfilled.
अध्याय २२९
तिर्यग्योनिसहस्रेषु जायमानः पुनः पुनः कथंचिल् लभते जन्म देही मानुष्यकं द्विजाः
tiryagyonisahasreṣu jāyamānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ kathaṃcil labhate janma dehī mānuṣyakaṃ dvijāḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Literally, 'three cities', built by Maya for the Asuras out of gold, silver and iron and in Heaven, Sky and Earth respectively; they had the power to travel anywhere; said to have started tormenting Devas and so were burnt ultimately by Lord Siva.
अध्याय २२९
मानुषत्वे ऽपि विप्रत्वं विप्रत्वे ऽपि विवेकिता विवेकाद् धर्मबुद्धिस् तु बुद्ध्या तु श्रेयसां ग्रहः
mānuṣatve 'pi vipratvaṃ vipratve 'pi vivekitā vivekād dharmabuddhis tu buddhyā tu śreyasāṃ grahaḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
He sucked the milk from the breasts of his mother. Still he was not satisfied. His heart had been rendered sour due to the jealousy of his brother. "Be Lambodara (pot-bellied).** Sambhu, thus, named Vighnaraja Lambodara.
अध्याय २२९
यावत् पापक्षयं पुंसां न भवेज् जन्म संचितम् तावन् न जायते भक्तिर् वासुदेवे जगन्मये
yāvat pāpakṣayaṃ puṃsāṃ na bhavej janma saṃcitam tāvan na jāyate bhaktir vāsudeve jaganmaye
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Surrounded by Devas MaheSasaid: "Startyourdance.** He was delighted by Ganesa by the sound of his anklets. He,:hcn crowned his son as the lord of Ganas.
अध्याय २२९
तस्माद् वक्ष्यामि भो विप्रा भक्तिः कृष्णे यथा भवेत् अन्यदेवेषु या भक्तिः पुरुषस्येह जायते
tasmād vakṣyāmi bho viprā bhaktiḥ kṛṣṇe yathā bhavet anyadeveṣu yā bhaktiḥ puruṣasyeha jāyate
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
This deity holds the noose of obstacles in one of his hands. With the other he holds the axe placed on the shoulder. If he is not worshipped he causes obstacles, even to his mother. Who else is equal to Vighnapati?
अध्याय २२९
कर्मणा मनसा वाचा तद्गतेनान्तरात्मना तेन तस्य भवेद् भक्तिर् यजने मुनिसत्तमाः
karmaṇā manasā vācā tadgatenāntarātmanā tena tasya bhaved bhaktir yajane munisattamāḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
In all undertakings for acquiring virtue, wealth, love etc., he is to be worshipped at the outset. He is worshipped by Devas and Asuras everyday. I bow down at firstto that lord who is worshipped at the beginning of every rite and whose worship prevents destruction.
अध्याय २२९
स करोति ततो विप्रा भक्तिं चाग्नेः समाहितः तुष्टे हुताशने तस्य भक्तिर् भवति भास्करे
sa karoti tato viprā bhaktiṃ cāgneḥ samāhitaḥ tuṣṭe hutāśane tasya bhaktir bhavati bhāskare
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
At the victorious campaign against Tripuras his father did an unusual thing (i.e. instead of being worshipped by his son he had to worship his son). I bow down to Ganesa who has been worshipped by his father with pleasure and who brought about freedom to his father.
अध्याय २२९
पूजां करोति सततम् आदित्यस्य ततो द्विजाः प्रसन्ने भास्करे तस्य भक्तिर् भवति शंकरे
pūjāṃ karoti satatam ādityasya tato dvijāḥ prasanne bhāskare tasya bhaktir bhavati śaṃkare
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
The holy centre known as Se§atirtha grants all cherished desires. I shall describe its features which have already been stated by me.
अध्याय २२९
पूजां करोति विधिवत् स तु शंभोः प्रयत्नतः तुष्टे त्रिलोचने तस्य भक्तिर् भवति केशवे
pūjāṃ karoti vidhivat sa tu śaṃbhoḥ prayatnataḥ tuṣṭe trilocane tasya bhaktir bhavati keśave
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Rasatala had been given by you to Rak§asas as well as to me. They do not give me room. Hence, I am seeking refuge in you.
अध्याय २२९
संपूज्य तं जगन्नाथं वासुदेवाख्यम् अव्ययम् ततो भुक्तिं च मुक्तिं च स प्राप्नोति द्विजोत्तमाः
saṃpūjya taṃ jagannāthaṃ vāsudevākhyam avyayam tato bhuktiṃ ca muktiṃ ca sa prāpnoti dvijottamāḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Then I said to him. "Go to Gautami, O Naga. By eulogizing Mahadeva there you will get everything you desire.
अध्याय २२९
अवैष्णवा नरा ये तु दृश्यन्ते च महामुने किं ते विष्णुं नार्चयन्ति ब्रूहि तत्कारणं द्विज
avaiṣṇavā narā ye tu dṛśyante ca mahāmune kiṃ te viṣṇuṃ nārcayanti brūhi tatkāraṇaṃ dvija
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
After propitiating the lord of Devas the delighted Naga of great fame attained what he desired from Siva and went to Rasatala.
अध्याय २२९
द्वौ भूतसर्गौ विख्यातौ लोके ऽस्मिन् मुनिसत्तमाः आसुरश् च तथा दैवः पुरा सृष्टः स्वयंभुवा
dvau bhūtasargau vikhyātau loke 'smin munisattamāḥ āsuraś ca tathā daivaḥ purā sṛṣṭaḥ svayaṃbhuvā
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Therefore, heaven became void and the mortal world was overcrowded because they were neglected by Mrtyu. Then Devas said to the Raksasas.
अध्याय २२९
दैवीं प्रकृतिम् आसाद्य पूजयन्ति ततो ऽच्युतम् आसुरीं योनिम् आपन्ना दूषयन्ति नरा हरिम्
daivīṃ prakṛtim āsādya pūjayanti tato 'cyutam āsurīṃ yonim āpannā dūṣayanti narā harim
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
*'All of you go to sacrifice. Destroy that great sacrifice of sages."
अध्याय २२९
मायया हतविज्ञाना विष्णोस् ते तु नराधमाः अप्राप्य तं हरिं विप्रास् ततो यान्त्य् अधमां गतिम्
māyayā hatavijñānā viṣṇos te tu narādhamāḥ aprāpya taṃ hariṃ viprās tato yānty adhamāṃ gatim
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
"We shall destroy that sacrifice. But what is our benefit therefrom? No one engages himself in any activity anywhere on any occasion without a proper reason."
अध्याय २२९
तस्य या गह्वरी माया दुर्विज्ञेया सुरासुरैः महामोहकरी नॄणां दुस्तरा चाकृतात्मभिः
tasya yā gahvarī māyā durvijñeyā surāsuraiḥ mahāmohakarī nṝṇāṃ dustarā cākṛtātmabhiḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Devas said to Asuras: "You too will get the benefit of sacrifice (?). Hence you go to the excellent sacrifice of sages".
अध्याय २२९
इच्छामस् तां महामायां ज्ञातुं विष्णोः सुदुस्तराम् वक्तुम् अर्हसि धर्मज्ञ परं कौतूहलं हि नः
icchāmas tāṃ mahāmāyāṃ jñātuṃ viṣṇoḥ sudustarām vaktum arhasi dharmajña paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi naḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
On hearing it they hurried to the place where the sacri¬ fice was on in order to destroy it, especially at the instance of Devas.
अध्याय २२९
स्वप्नेन्द्रजालसंकाशा माया सा लोककर्षणी कः शक्नोति हरेर् मायां ज्ञातुं तां केशवाद् ऋते
svapnendrajālasaṃkāśā māyā sā lokakarṣaṇī kaḥ śaknoti harer māyāṃ jñātuṃ tāṃ keśavād ṛte
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
On coming to know of it, the sages said to Mrtyu: "What shall we do? At the instance of Devas the Raksasas have come here as the destroyers of sacrifice."
अध्याय २२९
या वृत्ता ब्राह्मणस्यासीन् मायार्थे नारदस्य च विडम्बनां तु तां विप्राः शृणुध्वं गदतो मम
yā vṛttā brāhmaṇasyāsīn māyārthe nāradasya ca viḍambanāṃ tu tāṃ viprāḥ śṛṇudhvaṃ gadato mama
हिन्दी अर्थ

English
After taking their holy plunge there they eulogized Mahesana for their protection. With their palms joined in reverence they eulogized the lord of Devas.
अध्याय २२९
प्राग् आसीन् नृपतिः श्रीमान् आग्नीध्र इति विश्रुतः नगरे कामदमनस् तस्याथ तनयः शुचिः
prāg āsīn nṛpatiḥ śrīmān āgnīdhra iti viśrutaḥ nagare kāmadamanas tasyātha tanayaḥ śuciḥ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
O lord of Devas, a terrible danger has befallen us from the Raksasas. Protect our sacrifice. Protect us so that our sacrifice be concluded.
अध्याय २२९
धर्मारामः क्षमाशीलः पितृशुश्रूषणे रतः प्रजानुरञ्जको दक्षः श्रुतिशास्त्रकृतश्रमः
dharmārāmaḥ kṣamāśīlaḥ pitṛśuśrūṣaṇe rataḥ prajānurañjako dakṣaḥ śrutiśāstrakṛtaśramaḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
The lord did so. The three-eyed bull-bannered lord did so. With Mptyu as the slaughterer the sacrifice was con¬ cluded.
अध्याय २२९
पितास्य त्व् अकरोद् यत्नं विवाहाय न चैच्छत तं पिता प्राह किम् इति नेच्छसे दारसंग्रहम्
pitāsya tv akarod yatnaṃ vivāhāya na caicchata taṃ pitā prāha kim iti necchase dārasaṃgraham
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
The immortal ones slowly came there for their respec¬ tive shares in Havi offering. The furious sages said to them along with Mrtyu.
अध्याय २२९
सर्वम् एतत् सुखार्थं हि वाञ्छन्ति मनुजाः किल सुखमूला हि दाराश् च तस्मात् तं त्वं समाचर
sarvam etat sukhārthaṃ hi vāñchanti manujāḥ kila sukhamūlā hi dārāś ca tasmāt taṃ tvaṃ samācara
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Since Raksasas had been sent by you for destroying our sacrifice, let the sinful Raksasas be your enemies.
अध्याय २२९
स पितुर् वचनं श्रुत्वा तूष्णीम् आस्ते च गौरवात् मुहुर् मुहुस् तं च पिता चोदयाम् आस भो द्विजाः
sa pitur vacanaṃ śrutvā tūṣṇīm āste ca gauravāt muhur muhus taṃ ca pitā codayām āsa bho dvijāḥ

English
A demoness or evil spirit created by black magic or bom of sacrifice for destructive purposes.
अध्याय २२९
अथासौ पितरं प्राह तात नामानुरूपता मया समाश्रिता व्यक्ता वैष्णवी परिपालिनी
athāsau pitaraṃ prāha tāta nāmānurūpatā mayā samāśritā vyaktā vaiṣṇavī paripālinī
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Then he said to his father, "Father, I have resolved to live up to my name; I have openly taken up the Vaishnava way that protects."
अध्याय २२९
तं पिता प्राह संगम्य नैष धर्मो ऽस्ति पुत्रक न विधारयितव्या स्यात् पुरुषेण विपश्चिता
taṃ pitā prāha saṃgamya naiṣa dharmo 'sti putraka na vidhārayitavyā syāt puruṣeṇa vipaścitā

English
His father, coming to him, said, "This is not dharma, my son; a wise man should not refuse to take a wife.
अध्याय २२९
कुरु मद्वचनं पुत्र प्रभुर् अस्मि पिता तव मा निमज्ज कुलं मह्यं नरके संततिक्षयात्
kuru madvacanaṃ putra prabhur asmi pitā tava mā nimajja kulaṃ mahyaṃ narake saṃtatikṣayāt
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Do as I say, son, for I am your father and your master; do not let my family sink into hell through the end of our line."
अध्याय २२९
स हि तं पितुर् आदेशं श्रुत्वा प्राह सुतो वशी प्रीतः संस्मृत्य पौराणीं संसारस्य विचित्रताम्
sa hi taṃ pitur ādeśaṃ śrutvā prāha suto vaśī prītaḥ saṃsmṛtya paurāṇīṃ saṃsārasya vicitratām

Hearing his father's command, the self-controlled son, remembering with joy the ancient wonder of worldly existence, said to him:

शृणु तात वचो मह्यं तत्त्ववाक्यं सहेतुकम् नामानुरूपं कर्तव्यं सत्यं भवति पार्थिव
śṛṇu tāta vaco mahyaṃ tattvavākyaṃ sahetukam nāmānurūpaṃ kartavyaṃ satyaṃ bhavati pārthiva

"Listen, father, to my words, true and well reasoned: one should live up to one's name — that is true, O king.
अध्याय २२९
मया जन्मसहस्राणि जरामृत्युशतानि च प्राप्तानि दारसंयोगवियोगानि च सर्वशः
mayā janmasahasrāṇi jarāmṛtyuśatāni ca prāptāni dārasaṃyogaviyogāni ca sarvaśaḥ

English
I have passed through thousands of births and hundreds of old ages and deaths, and every kind of union with wives and separation from them.

तृणगुल्मलतावल्लीसरीसृपमृगद्विजाः पशुस्त्रीपुरुषाद्यानि प्राप्तानि शतशो मया
tṛṇagulmalatāvallīsarīsṛpamṛgadvijāḥ paśustrīpuruṣādyāni prāptāni śataśo mayā

Grass, shrub, creeper, vine, reptile, beast, bird, animal, woman, man and more — I have been these hundreds of times;

गणकिंनरगन्धर्वविद्याधरमहोरगाः यक्षगुह्यकरक्षांसि दानवाप्सरसः सुराः
gaṇakiṃnaragandharvavidyādharamahoragāḥ yakṣaguhyakarakṣāṃsi dānavāpsarasaḥ surāḥ

नदीश्वरसहस्रं च प्राप्तं तात पुनः पुनः सृष्टस् तु बहुशः सृष्टौ संहारे चापि संहृतः
nadīśvarasahasraṃ ca prāptaṃ tāta punaḥ punaḥ sṛṣṭas tu bahuśaḥ sṛṣṭau saṃhāre cāpi saṃhṛtaḥ

I have been a lord of rivers a thousand times, father, again and again; I have been created many times in creation and dissolved in dissolution.

दारसंयोगयुक्तस्य तातेदृङ् मे विडम्बना इतस् तृतीये यद् वृत्तं मम जन्मनि तच् छृणु कथयामि समासेन तीर्थमाहात्म्यसंभवम्

Such has been my mockery, father, while joined to a wife. Hear what happened in my third birth before this; I will tell you briefly, as it arises from the greatness of a tirtha.
अध्याय २२९
अतीत्य जन्मानि बहूनि तात नृदेवगन्धर्वमहोरगाणाम् विद्याधराणां खगकिंनराणां जातो हि वंशे सुतपा महर्षिः
atītya janmāni bahūni tāta nṛdevagandharvamahoragāṇām vidyādharāṇāṃ khagakiṃnarāṇāṃ jāto hi vaṃśe sutapā maharṣiḥ

After passing through many births among men, gods, Gandharvas, great serpents, Vidyadharas, birds and Kinnaras, I was born in a family as the great sage Sutapas.
अध्याय २२९
ततो महाभूद् अचला हि भक्तिर् जनार्दने लोकपतौ मधुघ्ने व्रतोपवासैर् विविधैश् च भक्त्या संतोषितश् चक्रगदास्त्रधारी

Then there arose in me a great unshakable devotion to Janardana, lord of the world, slayer of Madhu; through various vows and fasts and devotion, the bearer of discus and mace was pleased.
अध्याय २२९
तुष्टो ऽभ्यगात् पक्षिपतिं महात्मा विष्णुः समारुह्य वरप्रदो मे प्राहोच्चशब्दं व्रियतां द्विजाते वरो हि यं वाञ्छसि तं प्रदास्ये
tuṣṭo 'bhyagāt pakṣipatiṃ mahātmā viṣṇuḥ samāruhya varaprado me prāhoccaśabdaṃ vriyatāṃ dvijāte varo hi yaṃ vāñchasi taṃ pradāsye

Pleased, the great-souled Vishnu, giver of boons, came to me mounted on the lord of birds and said in a loud voice, 'Choose a boon, brahmin; whatever you desire, I will give.'
अध्याय २२९
ततो ऽहम् ऊचे हरिम् ईशितारं तुष्टो ऽसि चेत् केशव तद् वृणोमि या सा त्वदीया परमा हि माया तां वेत्तुम् इच्छामि जनार्दनो ऽहम्

अध्याय २२९
अथाब्रवीन् मे मधुकैटभारिः किं ते तया ब्रह्मन् मायया वै धर्मार्थकामानि ददानि तुभ्यं पुत्राणि मुख्यानि निरामयत्वम्

Then the enemy of Madhu and Kaitabha said to me, 'What do you want with that maya, brahmin? I will give you dharma, wealth and pleasure, excellent sons and freedom from illness.'
अध्याय २२९
ततो मुरारिं पुनर् उक्तवान् अहं भूयो ऽर्थधर्मार्थजिगीषितैव यत् माया तवेमाम् इह वेत्तुम् इच्छे ममाद्य तां दर्शय पुष्कराक्ष
tato murāriṃ punar uktavān ahaṃ bhūyo 'rthadharmārthajigīṣitaiva yat māyā tavemām iha vettum icche mamādya tāṃ darśaya puṣkarākṣa

ततो ऽभ्युवाचाथ नृसिंहमुख्यः श्रीशः प्रभुर् विष्णुर् इदं वचो मे मायां मदीयां नहि वेत्ति कश्चिन् न चापि वा वेत्स्यति कश्चिद् एव

वरं च दत्तं गतवान् अहं च स चापि वव्रे वरम् एतद् एव निवारितो माम् अतिमूढभावाद् भवान् यथैवं वृतवान् वरं च

Then I told him, "Narada, plunge into the water and you will know my maya." Narada plunged into the water and became Sushila, daughter of the king of Kashi.

तां यौवनाढ्याम् अथ चारुधर्मिणे विदर्भराज्ञस् तनयाय वै ददौ स्वधर्मणे सो ऽपि तया समेतः सिषेव कामान् अतुलान् महर्षिः

स्वर्गे गते ऽसौ पितरि प्रतापवान् राज्यं क्रमायातम् अवाप्य हृष्टः विदर्भराष्ट्रं परिपालयानः पुत्रैः सपौत्रैर् बहुभिर् वृतो ऽभूत्

अथाभवद् भूमिपतेः सुधर्मणः काशीश्वरेणाथ समं सुयुद्धम् तत्र क्षयं प्राप्य सपुत्रपौत्रं विदर्भराट् काशिपतिश् च युद्धे

ततः सुशीला पितरं सपुत्रं ज्ञात्वा पतिं चापि सपुत्रपौत्रम् पुराद् विनिःसृत्य रणावनिं गता दृष्ट्वा सुशीला कदनं महान्तम्

स वाक्यम् आकर्ण्य महामहर्षिर् उवाच भक्तिं मम देहि विष्णो प्राप्ते ऽथ काले स्मरणं तथैव सदा च संदर्शनम् ईश ते ऽस्तु

यत्राहम् आर्तश् चितिम् अद्य रूढस् तत् तीर्थम् अस्त्व् अच्युतपापहन्त्रा अधिष्ठितं केशव नित्यम् एव त्वया सहासं कमलोद्भवेन

यदा विरञ्चेर् वदनं त्रिनेत्रः स च्छेत्स्यतेयं च ममोग्रवाचम् तदा कपालस्य तु मोचनाय समेष्यते तीर्थम् इदं त्वदीयम्
yadā virañcer vadanaṃ trinetraḥ sa cchetsyateyaṃ ca mamogravācam tadā kapālasya tu mocanāya sameṣyate tīrtham idaṃ tvadīyam

When the three-eyed one cuts off Brahma's head, which speaks harshly of me, then he will come to this tirtha of yours to be freed from the skull.

स्नातस्य तीर्थे त्रिपुरान्तकस्य पतिष्यते भूमितले कपालम् ततस् तु तीर्थेति कपालमोचनं ख्यातं पृथिव्यां च भविष्यते तत्
snātasya tīrthe tripurāntakasya patiṣyate bhūmitale kapālam tatas tu tīrtheti kapālamocanaṃ khyātaṃ pṛthivyāṃ ca bhaviṣyate tat

When the destroyer of Tripura bathes at this tirtha the skull will fall to the ground, and so it will become famous on earth as the tirtha Kapalamochana.
अध्याय २२९
तदा प्रभृत्य् अम्बुदवाहनो ऽसौ न मोक्ष्यते तीर्थवरं सुपुण्यम् न चैव तस्मिन् द्विज संप्रचक्षते तत् क्षेत्रम् उग्रं त्व् अथ ब्रह्मवध्या
tadā prabhṛty ambudavāhano 'sau na mokṣyate tīrthavaraṃ supuṇyam na caiva tasmin dvija saṃpracakṣate tat kṣetram ugraṃ tv atha brahmavadhyā

From then on the rider of the clouds will never leave that most holy, excellent tirtha; and there, brahmin, it is said, the fierce sin of brahmin-slaying has no hold in that sacred field.

यदा न मोक्षत्य् अमरारिहन्ता तत् क्षेत्रमुख्यं महद् आप्तपुण्यम् तदा विमुक्तेति सुरै रहस्यं तीर्थं स्तुतं पुण्यदम् अव्ययाख्यम्
yadā na mokṣaty amarārihantā tat kṣetramukhyaṃ mahad āptapuṇyam tadā vimukteti surai rahasyaṃ tīrthaṃ stutaṃ puṇyadam avyayākhyam

Since the slayer of the gods' enemies will not leave that chief of sacred fields, rich in merit, the gods praised it as the secret tirtha Vimukta, merit-giving, called imperishable.
अध्याय २२९
कृत्वा तु पापानि नरो महान्ति तस्मिन् प्रविष्टः शुचिर् अप्रमादी यदा तु मां चिन्तयते स शुद्धः प्रयाति मोक्षं भगवत्प्रसादात्
kṛtvā tu pāpāni naro mahānti tasmin praviṣṭaḥ śucir apramādī yadā tu māṃ cintayate sa śuddhaḥ prayāti mokṣaṃ bhagavatprasādāt

A man who has committed great sins, entering it pure and heedful, becomes purified when he meditates on me, and attains liberation by the Lord's grace.

भूत्वा तस्मिन् रुद्रपिशाचसंज्ञो योन्यन्तरे दुःखम् उपाश्नुते ऽसौ विमुक्तपापो बहुवर्षपूगैर् उत्पत्तिम् आयास्यति विप्रगेहे

English
Or, becoming there a Rudra-pishacha, he suffers sorrow in another birth; freed from sin after many years, he will be born in a brahmin's home.
अध्याय २२९
शुचिर् यतात्मास्य ततो ऽन्तकाले रुद्रो हितं तारकम् अस्य कीर्तयेत् इत्य् एवम् उक्त्वा द्विजवर्य नारदं गतो ऽस्मि दुग्धार्णवम् आत्मगेहम्

Then, pure and self-controlled, at the hour of his death Rudra will recite to him the saving Taraka mantra." Having said this to Narada, best of brahmins, I went to the ocean of milk, my own home.
अध्याय २२९
स चापि विप्रस् त्रिदिवं चचार गन्धर्वराजेन समर्च्यमानः एतत् तवोक्तं ननु बोधनाय माया मदीया नहि शक्यते सा
sa cāpi vipras tridivaṃ cacāra gandharvarājena samarcyamānaḥ etat tavoktaṃ nanu bodhanāya māyā madīyā nahi śakyate sā

English
And that brahmin wandered in heaven, honoured by the king of the Gandharvas. This I have told you for your understanding: my maya cannot be known.
अध्याय २२९
ज्ञातुं भवान् इच्छति चेत् ततो ऽद्य एवं विशस्वाप्सु च वेत्सि येन एवं द्विजातिर् हरिणा प्रबोधितो भाव्यर्थयोगान् निममज्ज तोये

If you still wish to know it, then enter the water today and you shall know it.' Thus instructed by Hari, the brahmin, driven by what was to be, plunged into the water.

कोकामुखे तात ततो हि कन्या चाण्डालवेश्मन्य् अभवद् द्विजः सः रूपान्विता शीलगुणोपपन्ना अवाप सा यौवनम् आससाद

At Kokamukha, father, that brahmin then became a girl in an outcaste's house — beautiful, endowed with good conduct and virtues — and she grew up and reached youth.

चाण्डालपुत्रेण सुबाहुनापि विवाहिता रूपविवर्जितेन पतिर् न तस्या हि मतो बभूव सा तस्य चैवाभिमता बभूव

Two sons were born blind, and later a daughter who was deaf. Her husband was poor, and she, bewildered, would go to the river and weep there every day.

गता कदाचित् कलशं गृहीत्वा सान्तर् जलं स्नातुम् अथ प्रविष्टा यावद् द्विजो ऽसौ पुनर् एव तावज् जातः क्रियायोगरतः सुशीलः

ततो ऽन्धयुग्मं बधिरा च कन्या दुःखान्वितासौ समुपाजगाम ते वै रुदन्तं पितरं च दृष्ट्वा दुःखान्विता वै रुरुदुर् भृशार्ताः

Then, stopping his lament, I told him the story of his own family; and in his sorrow he entered Kokamukha together with his children, stricken.

प्रविष्टमात्रे सलिले मतङ्गस् तीर्थप्रभावाच् च विमुक्तपापः विमानम् आरुह्य शशिप्रकाशं ययौ दिवं तात ममोपपश्यतः

As soon as Matanga entered the water he was freed from sin by the power of the tirtha, and mounting a celestial car as bright as the moon, he went to heaven while I watched, father.

तस्मिन् प्रविष्टे सलिले मृते च ममार्तिर् आसीद् अतिमोहकर्त्री ततो ऽतिपुण्ये नृपवर्य कोका जले प्रविष्टस् त्रिदिवं गतश् च

Again I was born in a merchant family, afflicted with pain but remembering my past births by the grace of that excellent tirtha; then, deeply dispassionate, I went to Kokamukha, restrained in speech and mind.

व्रतं समास्थाय कलेवरं स्वं संशोषयित्वा दिवम् आरुरोह तस्माच् च्युतस् त्वद्भवने च जातो जातिस्मरस् तात हरिप्रसादात्
vrataṃ samāsthāya kalevaraṃ svaṃ saṃśoṣayitvā divam āruroha tasmāc cyutas tvadbhavane ca jāto jātismaras tāta hariprasādāt

Undertaking a vow and wasting away my body, I ascended to heaven; falling from there I was born in your house, father, remembering my past births by Hari's grace.

सो ऽहं समाराध्य मुरारिदेवं कोकामुखे त्यक्तशुभाशुभेच्छः इत्य् एवम् उक्त्वा पितरं प्रणम्य गत्वा च कोकामुखम् अग्रतीर्थम्

So I shall worship the god Murari at Kokamukha, having given up desire for good and ill." Having said this, he bowed to his father and went to Kokamukha, foremost of tirthas.

इत्थं स कामदमनः सहपुत्रपौत्रः कोकामुखे तीर्थवरे सुपुण्ये त्यक्त्वा तनुं दोषमयीं ततस् तु गतो दिवं सूर्यसमैर् विमानैः

English
Thus Kamadamana, with his sons and grandsons, gave up his faulty body at the most holy, excellent tirtha of Kokamukha, and then went to heaven in celestial cars as bright as the sun.

एवं मयोक्ता परमेश्वरस्य माया सुराणाम् अपि दुर्विचिन्त्या स्वप्नेन्द्रजालप्रतिमा मुरारेर् यया जगन् मोहम् उपैति विप्राः

So I have described the maya of the Supreme Lord, inconceivable even to the gods — Murari's maya, like a dream or a magic show, by which the world falls into delusion, O brahmins.
