एकादश्याम् उभे पक्षे निराहारः समाहितः स्नात्वा सम्यग् विधानेन धौतवासा जितेन्द्रियः

The brahmin Pippalada of great exploits established the position of trees in the overlordship of the field and wor¬ shipped Sankara.
अध्याय २२८
संपूज्य विधिवद् विष्णुं श्रद्धया सुसमाहितः पुष्पैर् गन्धैस् तथा दीपैर् धूपैर् नैवेद्यकैस् तथा
saṃpūjya vidhivad viṣṇuṃ śraddhayā susamāhitaḥ puṣpair gandhais tathā dīpair dhūpair naivedyakais tathā
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
The courageous son of Dadhlci of fierce splendour married the daughter of Gautama and begot sons. He earned wealth and fame and attained heaven along with his friends.
अध्याय २२८
उपहारैर् बहुविधैर् जप्यैर् होमप्रदक्षिणैः स्तोत्रैर् नानाविधैर् दिव्यैर् गीतवाद्यैर् मनोहरैः

English
The holy centre well known by the name of Nagatirtha is auspicious. It bestows all cherished things. Here the lord is Nagesvara. Listen to the detailed description of the same.
अध्याय २२८
दण्डवत्प्रणिपातैश् च जयशब्दैस् तथोत्तमैः एवं संपूज्य विधिवद् रात्रौ कृत्वा प्रजागरम्
daṇḍavatpraṇipātaiś ca jayaśabdais tathottamaiḥ evaṃ saṃpūjya vidhivad rātrau kṛtvā prajāgaram
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
In the company of his beloved wife he made great efforts for getting a son. After a long time a serpent of very terrible features was born as his son.
अध्याय २२८
कथां वा गीतिकां विष्णोर् गायन् विष्णुपरायणः याति विष्णोः परं स्थानं नरो नास्त्य् अत्र संशयः
kathāṃ vā gītikāṃ viṣṇor gāyan viṣṇuparāyaṇaḥ yāti viṣṇoḥ paraṃ sthānaṃ naro nāsty atra saṃśayaḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Surasena, the king, nursed and brought him up. No man ever knew that the king's son was a serpent.
अध्याय २२८
प्रजागरे गीतिकायाः फलं विष्णोर् महामुने ब्रूहि तच् छ्रोतुम् इच्छामः परं कौतूहलं हि नः
prajāgare gītikāyāḥ phalaṃ viṣṇor mahāmune brūhi tac chrotum icchāmaḥ paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi naḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Excepting his mother and father, no one whthin or without knew (this secret). Neither the nurse nor the chief minister nor the priest knew it.
अध्याय २२८
शृणुध्वं मुनिशार्दूलाः प्रवक्ष्याम्य् अनुपूर्वशः गीतिकायाः फलं विष्णोर् जागरे यद् उदाहृतम्
śṛṇudhvaṃ muniśārdūlāḥ pravakṣyāmy anupūrvaśaḥ gītikāyāḥ phalaṃ viṣṇor jāgare yad udāhṛtam
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
On seeing that terrible serpent the excellent king and his wife were acutely distressed everyday. (They thought) that having no sons is far better than having a serpent for a son.
अध्याय २२८
अवन्ती नाम नगरी बभूव भुवि विश्रुता तत्रास्ते भगवान् विष्णुः शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः
avantī nāma nagarī babhūva bhuvi viśrutā tatrāste bhagavān viṣṇuḥ śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ

English
On hearing these words of his son Surasena was extre¬ mely distressed. He fetched a certain brahmin and got the con- secratory rites duly performed. After learning the Vedas the serpent said to his father.
अध्याय २२८
विष्णुभक्तः स चाण्डालो मासि मासि दृढव्रतः एकादश्यां समागम्य सोपवासो ऽथ गायति
viṣṇubhaktaḥ sa cāṇḍālo māsi māsi dṛḍhavrataḥ ekādaśyāṃ samāgamya sopavāso 'tha gāyati

English
Celebrate my marriage, O king. I am desirous of a woman, O excellent king. This is my opinion that your duties will not be fulfilled otherwise.
अध्याय २२८
गीतिका विष्णुनामाङ्काः प्रादुर्भावसमाश्रिताः गान्धारषड्जनैषादस्वरपञ्चमधैवतैः
gītikā viṣṇunāmāṅkāḥ prādurbhāvasamāśritāḥ gāndhāraṣaḍjanaiṣādasvarapañcamadhaivataiḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
One should beget sons in accordance with the injunc¬ tions of the Vedas and perform all consccratory rites. There is no redemption for one who does not become a father and per¬ form such rites.
अध्याय २२८
रात्रिजागरणे विष्णुं गाथाभिर् उपगायति प्रभाते च प्रणम्येशं द्वादश्यां गृहम् एत्य च
rātrijāgaraṇe viṣṇuṃ gāthābhir upagāyati prabhāte ca praṇamyeśaṃ dvādaśyāṃ gṛham etya ca

On realizing the decision of that son, the excellent king without a (human) son called his ministers for discussing the marriage and said.
अध्याय २२८
जामातृभागिनेयांश् च भोजयित्वा सकन्यकाः ततः सपरिवारस् तु पश्चाद् भुङ्क्ते द्विजोत्तमाः
jāmātṛbhāgineyāṃś ca bhojayitvā sakanyakāḥ tataḥ saparivāras tu paścād bhuṅkte dvijottamāḥ

On hearing the words of the king the ministers humbly joined their palms in reverence. Delightedly they spoke to the king of profound brilliance:
अध्याय २२८
एवं तस्यासतस् तत्र कुर्वतो विष्णुप्रीणनम् गीतिकाभिर् विचित्राभिर् वयः प्रतिगतं बहु
evaṃ tasyāsatas tatra kurvato viṣṇuprīṇanam gītikābhir vicitrābhir vayaḥ pratigataṃ bahu
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
When the ministers said so, the excellent king of grave features did not mention to the ministers the fact that his son was a serpent. They too did not know it (from other sources).
अध्याय २२८
एकदा चैत्रमासे तु कृष्णैकादशिगोचरे विष्णुशुश्रूषणार्थाय ययौ वनम् अनुत्तमम्
ekadā caitramāse tu kṛṣṇaikādaśigocare viṣṇuśuśrūṣaṇārthāya yayau vanam anuttamam
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
That intelligent great king has eight valorous sons. Their sister Bhogavatl is precisely like another LaksmI. She is a suitable wife unto your son, O king.
अध्याय २२८
वनजातानि पुष्पाणि ग्रहीतुं भक्तितत्परः क्षिप्रातटे महारण्ये विभीतकतरोर् अधः
vanajātāni puṣpāṇi grahītuṃ bhaktitatparaḥ kṣiprātaṭe mahāraṇye vibhītakataror adhaḥ

The intelligent son of king Surasena, well known by the name of Naga, the ocean of virtue, does not wish to come here.
अध्याय २२८
दृष्टः स राक्षसेनाथ गृहीतश् चापि भक्षितुम् चाण्डालस् तम् अथोवाच नाद्य भक्ष्यस् त्वया ह्य् अहम्
dṛṣṭaḥ sa rākṣasenātha gṛhītaś cāpi bhakṣitum cāṇḍālas tam athovāca nādya bhakṣyas tvayā hy aham

The young maiden of excellent waistline, the youthful pretty daughter of Vijaya engaged herself in serving her father- in-law and mother-in-law everyday.

प्रातर् भोक्ष्यसि कल्याण सत्यम् एष्याम्य् अहं पुनः अद्य कार्यं मम महत् तस्मान् मुञ्चस्व राक्षस
prātar bhokṣyasi kalyāṇa satyam eṣyāmy ahaṃ punaḥ adya kāryaṃ mama mahat tasmān muñcasva rākṣasa

"Why does not my wife, the princess, come near me at all?" On hearing these words of her son, the mother of the serpent said:

श्वः सत्येन समेष्यामि ततः खादसि माम् इति विष्णुशुश्रूषणार्थाय रात्रिजागरणं मया कार्यं न व्रतविघ्नं मे कर्तुम् अर्हसि राक्षस
śvaḥ satyena sameṣyāmi tataḥ khādasi mām iti viṣṇuśuśrūṣaṇārthāya rātrijāgaraṇaṃ mayā kāryaṃ na vratavighnaṃ me kartum arhasi rākṣasa

O Nurse, of great beauty and fortune, go quickly and tell Bhogavati, "Your husband is a serpent". (Tell me) what she says thereupon.
अध्याय २२८
तं राक्षसः प्रत्युवाच दशरात्रम् अभोजनम् ममाभूद् अद्य च भवान् मया लब्धो मतङ्गज
taṃ rākṣasaḥ pratyuvāca daśarātram abhojanam mamābhūd adya ca bhavān mayā labdho mataṅgaja

English
After saying "so be it" and approaching Bhogavati she said to her in secret very humbly. She said so in a manner fit for reporting an unprecedented thing.
अध्याय २२८
न मोक्ष्ये भक्षयिष्यामि क्षुधया पीडितो भृशम् निशाचरवचः श्रुत्वा मातङ्गस् तम् उवाच ह सान्त्वयञ् श्लक्ष्णया वाचा स सत्यवचनैर् दृढैः
na mokṣye bhakṣayiṣyāmi kṣudhayā pīḍito bhṛśam niśācaravacaḥ śrutvā mātaṅgas tam uvāca ha sāntvayañ ślakṣṇayā vācā sa satyavacanair dṛḍhaiḥ

English
Though you are the daughter of a king, O my beloved wife, how is it that you are not afraid on seeing me?
अध्याय २२८
सत्यमूलं जगत् सर्वं ब्रह्मराक्षस तच् छृणु सत्येनाहं शपिष्यामि पुनरागमनाय च
satyamūlaṃ jagat sarvaṃ brahmarākṣasa tac chṛṇu satyenāhaṃ śapiṣyāmi punarāgamanāya ca

Then the extremely intelligent and delighted Nagendra said to his wife.
अध्याय २२८
आदित्यश् चन्द्रमा वह्निर् वायुर् भूर् द्यौर् जलं मनः अहोरात्रं यमः संध्ये द्वे विदुर् नरचेष्टितम्
ādityaś candramā vahnir vāyur bhūr dyaur jalaṃ manaḥ ahorātraṃ yamaḥ saṃdhye dve vidur naraceṣṭitam
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Then I will be released from the curse. Both of us shall goto Siva once again. Siva alone is the ultimate resort unto all distressed persons always.
अध्याय २२८
परदारेषु यत् पापं यत् परद्रव्यहारिषु यच् च ब्रह्महनः पापं सुरापे गुरुतल्पगे
paradāreṣu yat pāpaṃ yat paradravyahāriṣu yac ca brahmahanaḥ pāpaṃ surāpe gurutalpage
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Then the lord became delighted, O sage, and granted them the divine form. The serpent took leave of his parents and got ready to go to Siva's world along with his wife. On coming to know of it the extremely intelligent father said.
अध्याय २२८
वन्ध्यापतेश् च यत् पापं यत् पापं वृषलीपतेः यच् च देवलके पापं मत्स्यमांसाशिनश् च यत्
vandhyāpateś ca yat pāpaṃ yat pāpaṃ vṛṣalīpateḥ yac ca devalake pāpaṃ matsyamāṃsāśinaś ca yat
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
The eldest son (of a king) holds the rank of Crown Prince. You are my only son. Hence rule over the entire kingdom. Beget many sons. After I proceed to the supreme abode, go to Siva's city.
अध्याय २२८
क्रोडमांसाशिनो यच् च कूर्ममांसाशिनश् च यत् वृथा मांसाशिनो यच् च पृष्ठमांसाशिनश् च यत्
kroḍamāṃsāśino yac ca kūrmamāṃsāśinaś ca yat vṛthā māṃsāśino yac ca pṛṣṭhamāṃsāśinaś ca yat
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Then, along with Devas, I approached the Trident¬ armed lord standing in his abode. With my palms joined in reverence I eulogized him by reciting a number of prayers.
अध्याय २२८
कृतघ्ने मित्रघातके यत् पापं दिधिषूपतौ सूतकस्य च यत् पापं यत् पापं क्रूरकर्मणः
kṛtaghne mitraghātake yat pāpaṃ didhiṣūpatau sūtakasya ca yat pāpaṃ yat pāpaṃ krūrakarmaṇaḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
On being requested thus he went at the very same moment to the place where the enemies of Devas were camping. A fierce battle raged between Sankara and the enemies of Devas.
अध्याय २२८
कृपणस्य च यत् पापं यच् च वन्ध्यातिथेर् अपि अमावास्याष्टमी षष्ठी कृष्णशुक्लचतुर्दशी
kṛpaṇasya ca yat pāpaṃ yac ca vandhyātither api amāvāsyāṣṭamī ṣaṣṭhī kṛṣṇaśuklacaturdaśī
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Then the three-eyed lord became tired. Siva (then) assumed the Tamasa form. As he fought, drops of sweat fell from his forehead.
अध्याय २२८
तासु यद् गमनात् पापं यद् विप्रो व्रजति स्त्रियम् रजस्वलां तथा पश्चाच् छ्राद्धं कृत्वा स्त्रियं व्रजेत्
tāsu yad gamanāt pāpaṃ yad vipro vrajati striyam rajasvalāṃ tathā paścāc chrāddhaṃ kṛtvā striyaṃ vrajet
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Having resorted to the Tamasa form he killed Asuras. On seeing that form the Asuras went to the Earth 'from the top of Meru.
अध्याय २२८
सर्वस्वस्नातभोज्यानां यत् पापं मलभोजने मित्रभार्यां गच्छतां च यत् पापं पिशुनस्य च
sarvasvasnātabhojyānāṃ yat pāpaṃ malabhojane mitrabhāryāṃ gacchatāṃ ca yat pāpaṃ piśunasya ca

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Killing all Daityas Hara too went to the Earth. Being, frightened, they went around here and there all over the Earth.
अध्याय २२८
दम्भमायानुरक्ते च यत् पापं मधुघातिनः ब्राह्मणस्य प्रतिश्रुत्य यत् पापं तदयच्छतः
dambhamāyānurakte ca yat pāpaṃ madhughātinaḥ brāhmaṇasya pratiśrutya yat pāpaṃ tadayacchataḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
In the same manner Rudra too followed them in anger. In the same manner (as before) drops of perspiration fell down as Sambhu fought.
अध्याय २२८
यच् च कन्यानृते पापं यच् च गोश्वतरानृते स्त्रीबालहन्तुर् यत् पापं यच् च मिथ्याभिभाषिणः
yac ca kanyānṛte pāpaṃ yac ca gośvatarānṛte strībālahantur yat pāpaṃ yac ca mithyābhibhāṣiṇaḥ

Wherever the drops of perspiration came into contact with the Earth, O sage, the Mothers with the features of Siva were born.
अध्याय २२८
देववेदद्विजनृपपुत्रमित्रसतीस्त्रियः यच् च निन्दयतां पापं गुरुमिथ्यापचारतः
devavedadvijanṛpaputramitrasatīstriyaḥ yac ca nindayatāṃ pāpaṃ gurumithyāpacārataḥ

All of them said to Mahesvara, "We shall devour Asuras'*. Then the lord surrounded by Devas said:

अग्नित्यागिषु यत् पापम् अग्निदायिषु यद् वने गृहेष्ट्या पातके यच् च यद् गोघ्ने यद् द्विजाधमे
agnityāgiṣu yat pāpam agnidāyiṣu yad vane gṛheṣṭyā pātake yac ca yad goghne yad dvijādhame

यत् पापं परिवित्ते च यत् पापं परिवेदिनः तयोर् दातृग्रहीत्रोश् च यत् पापं भ्रूणघातिनः
yat pāpaṃ parivitte ca yat pāpaṃ parivedinaḥ tayor dātṛgrahītroś ca yat pāpaṃ bhrūṇaghātinaḥ

English
Let the Mothers go wherever the enemies go. Now, the enemies have gone to the nether worlds. They are afraid of me. Following these enemies all of you too go to the nether worlds.
अध्याय २२८
किं चात्र बहुभिः प्रोक्तैः शपथैस् तव राक्षस श्रूयतां शपथं भीमं दुर्वाच्यम् अपि कथ्यते

English
"O Daityas why do you flee? You need not fear. I am coming quickly. I shall devour all Devas who come over here." •
अध्याय २२८
स्वकन्याजीविनः पापं गूढसत्येन साक्षिणः अयाज्ययाजके षण्ढे यत् पापं श्रवणे ऽधमे
svakanyājīvinaḥ pāpaṃ gūḍhasatyena sākṣiṇaḥ ayājyayājake ṣaṇḍhe yat pāpaṃ śravaṇe 'dhame
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।

On seeing it preventing me and intending to devour in this manner all Devas became frightened and they spoke to Visnu:
अध्याय २२८
प्रव्रज्यावसिते यच् च ब्रह्मचारिणि कामुके एतैस् तु पापैर् लिप्ये ऽहं यदि नैष्यामि ते ऽन्तिकम्
pravrajyāvasite yac ca brahmacāriṇi kāmuke etais tu pāpair lipye 'haṃ yadi naiṣyāmi te 'ntikam

अध्याय २२८
मातङ्गवचनं श्रुत्वा विस्मितो ब्रह्मराक्षसः प्राह गच्छस्व सत्येन समयं चैव पालय
mātaṅgavacanaṃ śrutvā vismito brahmarākṣasaḥ prāha gacchasva satyena samayaṃ caiva pālaya

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
"If it is not cut off the entire universe will be destroyed; if it is cut the result is the same."
अध्याय २२८
इत्य् उक्तः कुणपाशेन श्वपाकः कुसुमानि तु समादायागमच् चैव विष्णोः स निलयं गतः

On seeing that extraordinary and difficult task on the banks of Gautami, Devas eulogized the lord out of love and devotion.
अध्याय २२८
तानि प्रादाद् ब्राह्मणाय सो ऽपि प्रक्षाल्य चाम्भसा विष्णुम् अभ्यर्च्य निलयं जगाम स तपोधनाः
tāni prādād brāhmaṇāya so 'pi prakṣālya cāmbhasā viṣṇum abhyarcya nilayaṃ jagāma sa tapodhanāḥ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
The extremely terrible head of Brahma had been inimical to Devas. It had approached for devouring them. By the tips of his nails as sharp as a needle the crescent-crested lord plucked it off. Since there was danger in casting it off he held it in his hand out of compassion.
अध्याय २२८
सो ऽपि मातङ्गदायादः सोपवासस् तु तां निशाम् गायन् हि बाह्यभूमिष्ठः प्रजागरम् उपाकरोत्

On seeing that super-divine activity, all those Devas who were standing near Brahma eulogized the lord of Devas.
अध्याय २२८
प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यां स्नात्वा देवं नमस्य च सत्यं स समयं कर्तुं प्रतस्थे यत्र राक्षसः
prabhātāyāṃ tu śarvaryāṃ snātvā devaṃ namasya ca satyaṃ sa samayaṃ kartuṃ pratasthe yatra rākṣasaḥ

dharmārthakāmamokṣāṇāṃ śarīraṃ sādhanaṃ yataḥ mahatā tu prayatnena śarīraṃ pālayed budhaḥ

Since the body is the means to dharma, wealth, pleasure and liberation, the wise should protect the body with great care.

जीवधर्मार्थसुखं नरस् तथाप्नोति मोक्षगतिम् अग्र्याम् जीवन् कीर्तिम् उपैति च भवति मृतस्य का कथा लोके
jīvadharmārthasukhaṃ naras tathāpnoti mokṣagatim agryām jīvan kīrtim upaiti ca bhavati mṛtasya kā kathā loke

Living, a man gains dharma, wealth and happiness, and likewise the highest state of liberation; living, he wins fame — what is there in the world for a dead man?

मातङ्गस् तद् वचः श्रुत्वा प्रत्युवाचाथ हेतुमत्

तं भूयः प्रत्युवाचाथ किम् एवं मूढधीर् भवान् किं न श्रुतं त्वया साधो मनुना यद् उदीरितम्
taṃ bhūyaḥ pratyuvācātha kim evaṃ mūḍhadhīr bhavān kiṃ na śrutaṃ tvayā sādho manunā yad udīritam

गोस्त्रीद्विजानां परिरक्षणार्थं विवाहकाले सुरतप्रसङ्गे प्राणात्यये सर्वधनापहारे पञ्चानृतान्य् आहुर् अपातकानि

To protect cows, women and brahmins, at the time of marriage, in lovemaking, when life is in danger, and when all one's wealth is being seized — these five untruths are declared not to be sins.
अध्याय २२८
धर्मवाक्यं न च स्त्रीषु न विवाहे तथा रिपौ वञ्चने चार्थहानौ च स्वनाशे ऽनृतके तथा एवं तद् वाक्यम् आकर्ण्य मातङ्गः प्रत्युवाच ह
dharmavākyaṃ na ca strīṣu na vivāhe tathā ripau vañcane cārthahānau ca svanāśe 'nṛtake tathā evaṃ tad vākyam ākarṇya mātaṅgaḥ pratyuvāca ha

Strict truthfulness is not required toward women, at a marriage, toward an enemy, against deceit, in loss of wealth, or when one's own life is at stake." Hearing these words, Matanga replied:

मैवं वदस्व भद्रं ते सत्यं लोकेषु पूज्यते सत्येनावाप्यते सौख्यं यत् किंचिज् जगतीगतम्

सत्येनार्कः प्रतपति सत्येनापो रसात्मिकाः ज्वलत्य् अग्निश् च सत्येन वाति सत्येन मारुतः
satyenārkaḥ pratapati satyenāpo rasātmikāḥ jvalaty agniś ca satyena vāti satyena mārutaḥ

धर्मार्थकामसंप्राप्तिर् मोक्षप्राप्तिश् च दुर्लभा सत्येन जायते पुंसां तस्मात् सत्यं न संत्यजेत्

The attainment of dharma, wealth and pleasure, and the hard-won attainment of liberation, come to men through truth; therefore one should not abandon truth.

सत्यं ब्रह्म परं लोके सत्यं यज्ञेषु चोत्तमम् सत्यं स्वर्गसमायातं तस्मात् सत्यं न संत्यजेत्
satyaṃ brahma paraṃ loke satyaṃ yajñeṣu cottamam satyaṃ svargasamāyātaṃ tasmāt satyaṃ na saṃtyajet

Truth is the supreme Brahman in the world, truth is the highest in sacrifices, truth leads to heaven; therefore one should not abandon truth."

इत्य् उक्त्वा सो ऽथ मातङ्गस् तं प्रक्षिप्य नरोत्तमम् जगाम तत्र यत्रास्ते प्राणिहा ब्रह्मराक्षसः

tam āgataṃ samīkṣyāsau cāṇḍālaṃ brahmarākṣasaḥ vismayotphullanayanaḥ śiraḥkampaṃ tam abravīt

Seeing the outcaste arrive, the brahmarakshasa, eyes wide with astonishment, shook his head and said to him:

By this deed I consider you a brahmin, pure and unfailing. I will say something to you, good sir, grounded in dharma: tell me, what did you do that night in Vishnu's temple?"

तम् अभ्युवाच मातङ्गः शृणु विष्णुगृहे मया यत् कृतं रजनीभागे यथातथ्यं वदामि ते

viṣṇor devakulasyādhaḥ sthitenānamramūrtinā prajāgaraḥ kṛto rātrau gāyatā viṣṇugītikām

Standing below Vishnu's shrine, I kept vigil through the night, singing songs to Vishnu."
अध्याय २२८
तं ब्रह्मराक्षसः प्राह कियन्तं कालम् उच्यताम् प्रजागरो विष्णुगृहे कृतं भक्तिमता वद
taṃ brahmarākṣasaḥ prāha kiyantaṃ kālam ucyatām prajāgaro viṣṇugṛhe kṛtaṃ bhaktimatā vada

The brahmarakshasa said to him, "Tell me, how long have you, devoted one, kept vigil in Vishnu's temple?"
अध्याय २२८
तम् अभ्युवाच प्रहसन् विंशत्य् अब्दानि राक्षस एकादश्यां मासि मासि कृतस् तत्र प्रजागरः मातङ्गवचनं श्रुत्वा प्रोवाच ब्रह्मराक्षसः
tam abhyuvāca prahasan viṃśaty abdāni rākṣasa ekādaśyāṃ māsi māsi kṛtas tatra prajāgaraḥ mātaṅgavacanaṃ śrutvā provāca brahmarākṣasaḥ

Laughing, he said to him, "For twenty years, O rakshasa, I have kept vigil there on the Ekadashi of every month." Hearing Matanga's words, the brahmarakshasa said:

यद् अद्य त्वां प्रवक्ष्यामि तद् भवान् वक्तुम् अर्हति एकरात्रिकृतं साधो मम देहि प्रजागरम्
yad adya tvāṃ pravakṣyāmi tad bhavān vaktum arhati ekarātrikṛtaṃ sādho mama dehi prajāgaram

"What I ask of you now, you ought to grant: give me, good man, the merit of one night's vigil.

एवं त्वां मोक्षयिष्यामि मोक्षयिष्यामि नान्यथा त्रिः सत्येन महाभाग इत्य् उक्त्वा विरराम ह

In that way I will release you — I will release you, and not otherwise; I swear it three times by truth, fortunate one." Having said this, he fell silent.

मातङ्गस् तम् उवाचाथ मयात्मा ते निशाचर निवेदितः किम् उक्तेन खादस्व स्वेच्छयापि माम्

मातङ्गो राक्षसं प्राह किम् असंबद्धम् उच्यते खादस्व स्वेच्छया मां त्वं न प्रदास्ये प्रजागरम् मातङ्गवचनं श्रुत्वा प्राह तं ब्रह्मराक्षसः

Matanga said to the rakshasa, "Why say something so pointless? Eat me as you wish; I will not give you the vigil." Hearing Matanga's words, the brahmarakshasa said to him:

Toward the wretched, the sin-afflicted, the one deluded by sense objects, the fool tormented by hell, the good are compassionate.
अध्याय २२८
तन् मम त्वं महाभाग कृपां कृत्वा प्रजागरम् यामस्यैकस्य मे देहि गच्छ वा निलयं स्वकम्
tan mama tvaṃ mahābhāga kṛpāṃ kṛtvā prajāgaram yāmasyaikasya me dehi gaccha vā nilayaṃ svakam

So, fortunate one, show me compassion and give me the vigil of a single watch, or else go to your own home."
अध्याय २२८
तं पुनः प्राह चाण्डालो न यास्यामि निजं गृहम् न चापि तव दास्यामि कथंचिद् यामजागरम् तं प्रहस्याथ चाण्डालं प्रोवाच ब्रह्मराक्षसः

tan māṃ pāpamahāmbhodhau nimagnaṃ tvaṃ samuddhara prajāgare gītikaikāṃ paścimāṃ dātum arhasi

तत्रानशनसंकल्पं कृत्वा प्राणाञ् जहौ द्विजाः राक्षसत्वाद् विनिर्मुक्तो गीतिकाफलबृंहितः
tatrānaśanasaṃkalpaṃ kṛtvā prāṇāñ jahau dvijāḥ rākṣasatvād vinirmukto gītikāphalabṛṃhitaḥ

pṛthūdakaprabhāvāc ca brahmalokaṃ ca durlabham daśa varṣasahasrāṇi nirātaṅko 'vasat tataḥ

snānaṃ pāpaharaṃ cakre sa tu cāṇḍālavaṃśajaḥ vimuktapāpaḥ sasmāra pūrvajātīr anekaśaḥ

The Siddha said, "I know her — Urvashi, who holds Shakra's fly-whisk, the chief ornament of heaven, of noble birth."

विप्रः सिद्धम् उवाचाथ ऋजुमार्गविवर्जितः तन् मित्र मत्कृते वार्त्ताम् उर्वश्या भवतादरात्

बभूव सिद्धो ऽपि ययौ मेरुपृष्ठं सुरालयम् समेत्य चोर्वशीं प्राह यद् उक्तो ऽसौ द्विजेन तु

The Siddha went to the summit of Meru, abode of the gods, met Urvashi, and told her what the brahmin had said.
अध्याय २२८
सा प्राह तं सिद्धवरं नाहं काशिपतिं द्विजम् जानामि सत्यम् उक्तं ते न चेतसि मम स्थितम्
sā prāha taṃ siddhavaraṃ nāhaṃ kāśipatiṃ dvijam jānāmi satyam uktaṃ te na cetasi mama sthitam

She said to that excellent Siddha, "I do not know this brahmin of Kashi; truly, what you tell me has no place in my mind."

इत्य् उक्तः प्रययौ सो ऽपि कालेन बहुना पुनः वाराणसीं ययौ सिद्धो दृष्टो मूर्खेण वै पुनः

Told this, he departed; and after a long time the Siddha went to Varanasi again and was seen once more by the fool.

दृष्टः पृष्टः किल भूयः किम् आहोरुभवा तव सिद्धो ऽब्रवीन् न जानामि माम् उवाचोर्वशी स्वयम्
dṛṣṭaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ kila bhūyaḥ kim āhorubhavā tava siddho 'bravīn na jānāmi mām uvācorvaśī svayam

Seen and asked again, "What did the thigh-born one say to you?", the Siddha replied, "I do not know; Urvashi herself told me she does not know you."

सिद्धवाक्यं ततः श्रुत्वा स्मितभिन्नौष्ठसंपुटः पुनः प्राह कथं वेत्सीत्य् एवं वाच्या त्वयोर्वशी

Hearing the Siddha's words, the brahmin, his lips parted in a smile, said again, "Ask Urvashi this: 'How might you come to know him?'"

बाढम् एवं करिष्यामीत्य् उक्त्वा सिद्धो दिवं गतः ददर्श शक्रभवनान् निष्क्रामन्तीम् अथोर्वशीम्
bāḍham evaṃ kariṣyāmīty uktvā siddho divaṃ gataḥ dadarśa śakrabhavanān niṣkrāmantīm athorvaśīm

"Very well, I will do so," said the Siddha, and went to heaven; there he saw Urvashi coming out of Shakra's palace.

मासमात्रं गतायास् तु तस्या भद्रे स्थितस्य च मम सत्यानुरक्तस्य संगमाय धृतव्रते

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
She has been gone a month, good lady, and I have stayed, devoted to truth, keeping my vow for the sake of union with her."
अध्याय २२८
तस्य सा वचनं श्रुत्वा कृत्वा स्वं रूपम् उत्तमम् विहस्य भावगम्भीरम् उर्वशी प्राह तं द्विजम्
tasya sā vacanaṃ śrutvā kṛtvā svaṃ rūpam uttamam vihasya bhāvagambhīram urvaśī prāha taṃ dvijam

Hearing his words, Urvashi took on her own supreme form, laughed with deep feeling, and said to the brahmin:

साधु सत्यं त्वया विप्र व्रतं निष्ठितचेतसा निष्पादितं हठाद् एव मम दर्शनम् इच्छता
sādhu satyaṃ tvayā vipra vrataṃ niṣṭhitacetasā niṣpāditaṃ haṭhād eva mama darśanam icchatā
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
"Well done, brahmin! With a steadfast mind you have kept your vow truly, holding fast in your wish to see me.
अध्याय २२८
अहम् एवोर्वशी विप्र त्वां जिज्ञासार्थम् आगता परीक्षितो निश्चितवान् भवान् सत्यतपा ऋषिः
aham evorvaśī vipra tvāṃ jijñāsārtham āgatā parīkṣito niścitavān bhavān satyatapā ṛṣiḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
I am Urvashi herself, brahmin; I came to test you. You have been tested and proved resolute — you are a sage whose austerity is truth, Satyatapas.
अध्याय २२८
गच्छ शूकरवोद्देशं रूपतीर्थेति विश्रुतम् सिद्धिं यास्यसि विप्रेन्द्र ततस् त्वं माम् अवाप्स्यसि
gaccha śūkaravoddeśaṃ rūpatīrtheti viśrutam siddhiṃ yāsyasi viprendra tatas tvaṃ mām avāpsyasi
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Go to the region of Shukarava, to the tirtha famed as Rupatirtha; you will attain perfection, best of brahmins, and then you will win me."

इत्य् उक्त्वा दिवम् उत्पत्य सा जगामोर्वशी द्विजाः स च सत्यतपा विप्रो रूपतीर्थं जगाम ह

Having said this, Urvashi flew up to heaven, O brahmins, and that brahmin Satyatapas went to Rupatirtha.
अध्याय २२८
तत्र शान्तिपरो भूत्वा नियमव्रतधृक् शुचिः देहोत्सर्गे जगामासौ गान्धर्वं लोकम् उत्तमम्
tatra śāntiparo bhūtvā niyamavratadhṛk śuciḥ dehotsarge jagāmāsau gāndharvaṃ lokam uttamam
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
There, devoted to peace, keeping vows and disciplines and pure, when he gave up his body he went to the excellent world of the Gandharvas.
अध्याय २२८
तत्र मन्वन्तरशतं भोगान् भुक्त्वा यथार्थतः बभूव सुकुले राजा प्रजारञ्जनतत्परः
tatra manvantaraśataṃ bhogān bhuktvā yathārthataḥ babhūva sukule rājā prajārañjanatatparaḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Having enjoyed pleasures there for a hundred manvantaras, he was born a king in a good family, devoted to pleasing his subjects.
अध्याय २२८
स यज्वा विविधैर् यज्ञैः समाप्तवरदक्षिणैः पुत्रेषु राज्यं निक्षिप्य ययौ शौकरवं पुनः
sa yajvā vividhair yajñaiḥ samāptavaradakṣiṇaiḥ putreṣu rājyaṃ nikṣipya yayau śaukaravaṃ punaḥ

इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
He performed various sacrifices completed with excellent fees; then, entrusting the kingdom to his sons, he went again to Shaukarava.

रूपतीर्थे मृतो भूयः शक्रलोकम् उपागतः तत्र मन्वन्तरशतं भोगान् भुक्त्वा ततश् च्युतः
rūpatīrthe mṛto bhūyaḥ śakralokam upāgataḥ tatra manvantaraśataṃ bhogān bhuktvā tataś cyutaḥ

pratiṣṭhāne puravare budhaputraḥ purūravāḥ babhūva tatra corvaśyāḥ saṃgamāya tapodhanāḥ

English
and in the excellent city of Pratishthana was born as Pururavas, son of Budha, for union with Urvashi, O ascetics.

एवं पुरा सत्यतपा द्विजातिस् तीर्थे प्रसिद्धे स हि रूपसंज्ञे आराध्य जन्मन्य् अथ चार्च्य विष्णुम् अवाप्य भोगान् अथ मुक्तिम् एति

Thus of old the brahmin Satyatapas, at the famous tirtha named Rupa, worshipped Vishnu in birth after birth, obtained enjoyments, and then attained liberation.
