अध्याय २३८
सृजते तु गुणान् सत्त्वं क्षेत्रज्ञस् त्व् अधितिष्ठति गुणान् विक्रियतः सर्वान् उदासीनवद् ईश्वरः
sṛjate tu guṇān sattvaṃ kṣetrajñas tv adhitiṣṭhati guṇān vikriyataḥ sarvān udāsīnavad īśvaraḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Just like the Rtviks I too am a servant of Devas. I carry Havya to Devas. They are the enjoyers (and therefore) they are the saviours too.
अध्याय २३८
स्वभावयुक्तं तत् सर्वं यद् इमान् सृजते गुणान् ऊर्णनाभिर् यथा सूत्रं सृजते तद् गुणांस् तथा
svabhāvayuktaṃ tat sarvaṃ yad imān sṛjate guṇān ūrṇanābhir yathā sūtraṃ sṛjate tad guṇāṃs tathā
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
I shall call Devas and carefully distribute their shares in the Havis to each. Hence, you go hurriedly towards them.
अध्याय २३८
प्रवृत्ता न निवर्तन्ते प्रवृत्तिर् नोपलभ्यते एवम् एके व्यवस्यन्ति निवृत्तिम् इति चापरे
pravṛttā na nivartante pravṛttir nopalabhyate evam eke vyavasyanti nivṛttim iti cāpare
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Devapi approached Devas and bowed to each of them. He then intimated to them the statement of Rtviks, of the Fire-god and (his own threat of) curse.
अध्याय २३८
उभयं संप्रधार्यैतद् अध्यवस्येद् यथामति अनेनैव विधानेन भवेद् वै संशयो महान्
ubhayaṃ saṃpradhāryaitad adhyavasyed yathāmati anenaiva vidhānena bhaved vai saṃśayo mahān
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
When we are invoked by the Vedic Mantras by the Rtviks in the proper order we partake of our shares in the Havis. We are not otherwise free, O excellent brahmin.
अध्याय २३८
अनादिनिधनो ह्य् आत्मा तं बुद्ध्वा विहरेन् नरः अक्रुध्यन्न् अप्रहृष्यंश् च नित्यं विगतमत्सरः
anādinidhano hy ātmā taṃ buddhvā viharen naraḥ akrudhyann aprahṛṣyaṃś ca nityaṃ vigatamatsaraḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Hence, we are the perpetual followers of the Vedas. We are induced by the Vedas. O brahmin, we are dependent. Therefore, intimate this to the Vedas.
अध्याय २३८
इत्य् एवं हृदये सर्वो बुद्धिचिन्तामयं दृढम् अनित्यं सुखम् आसीनम् अशोच्यं छिन्नसंशयः
ity evaṃ hṛdaye sarvo buddhicintāmayaṃ dṛḍham anityaṃ sukham āsīnam aśocyaṃ chinnasaṃśayaḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
At the instance of the Vedas the boy Devapi went to Gautami. The brahmin took his bath and having got the proper opportunity eulogized Mahelvara.
अध्याय २३८
तरयेत् प्रच्युतां पृथ्वीं यथा पूर्णां नदीं नराः अवगाह्य च विद्वांसो विप्रा लोलम् इमं तथा
tarayet pracyutāṃ pṛthvīṃ yathā pūrṇāṃ nadīṃ narāḥ avagāhya ca vidvāṃso viprā lolam imaṃ tathā
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
O lord of the chiefs of Devas, I am a mere boy. You are the preceptor of preceptors. I have no power to eulogize you befittingly. Obeisance be to you, O Sambhu.
अध्याय २३८
न तु तप्यति वै विद्वान् स्थले चरति तत्त्ववित् एवं विचिन्त्य चात्मानं केवलं ज्ञानम् आत्मनः
na tu tapyati vai vidvān sthale carati tattvavit evaṃ vicintya cātmānaṃ kevalaṃ jñānam ātmanaḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
The Vedas do not know you. Neither Devas nor sages. Neither Brahma nor Visnu. As you are so you are. Obeisance be to you.
अध्याय २३८
तां तु बुद्ध्वा नरः सर्गं भूतानाम् आगतिं गतिम् समचेष्टश् च वै सम्यग् लभते शमम् उत्तमम्
tāṃ tu buddhvā naraḥ sargaṃ bhūtānām āgatiṃ gatim samaceṣṭaś ca vai samyag labhate śamam uttamam
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
You protect, O Mahegvara, those who are sinning souls, who are helpless, who are miserable, who are poor and who are sickly.
अध्याय २३८
एतद् द्विजन्मसामग्र्यं ब्राह्मणस्य विशेषतः आत्मज्ञानसमस्नेहपर्याप्तं तत्परायणम्
etad dvijanmasāmagryaṃ brāhmaṇasya viśeṣataḥ ātmajñānasamasnehaparyāptaṃ tatparāyaṇam
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
The heaven-dwellers who are worshipped by penance, holy rites and Mantras will give them the benefit ordained by you, O lord of the worlds.
अध्याय २३८
तत्त्वं बुद्ध्वा भवेद् बुद्धः किम् अन्यद् बुद्धलक्षणम् विज्ञायैतद् विमुच्यन्ते कृतकृत्या मनीषिणः
tattvaṃ buddhvā bhaved buddhaḥ kim anyad buddhalakṣaṇam vijñāyaitad vimucyante kṛtakṛtyā manīṣiṇaḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
(Even) beggars will turn out to be donors. Whatever they desire is not wanting at your door. You are the cause of this unique situation.
अध्याय २३८
न भवति विदुषां महद् भयं यद् अविदुषां सुमहद् भयं परत्र नहि गतिर् अधिकास्ति कस्यचिद् भवति हि या विदुषः सनातनी
na bhavati viduṣāṃ mahad bhayaṃ yad aviduṣāṃ sumahad bhayaṃ paratra nahi gatir adhikāsti kasyacid bhavati hi yā viduṣaḥ sanātanī
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
O preceptor of the universe, O lord, at the mere utter¬ ance of the word Siva, you protect ignorant persons, sinners and those who are immersed in the ocean of hell.
अध्याय २३८
लोके मातरम् असूयते नरस् तत्र देवम् अनिरीक्ष्य शोचते तत्र चेत् कुशलो न शोचते ये विदुस् तद् उभयं कृताकृतम्
loke mātaram asūyate naras tatra devam anirīkṣya śocate tatra cet kuśalo na śocate ye vidus tad ubhayaṃ kṛtākṛtam
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
On hearing the words of Devapi the lord of the uni¬ verse said "So be it". At the behest of Sankara, Devapi got everything.
अध्याय २३८
यत् करोत्य् अनभिसंधिपूर्वकं तच् च निन्दयति यत् पुरा कृतम् यत् प्रियं तद् उभयं न वाप्रियं तस्य तज् जनयतीह कुर्वतः
yat karoty anabhisaṃdhipūrvakaṃ tac ca nindayati yat purā kṛtam yat priyaṃ tad ubhayaṃ na vāpriyaṃ tasya taj janayatīha kurvataḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Calling Nandin, one of his Ganas, the merciful lord Sambhu sent him with his Spear, O Narada.
अध्याय २३८
यस्माद् धर्मात् परो धर्मो विद्यते नेह कश्चन यो विशिष्टश् च भूतेभ्यस् तद् भवान् प्रब्रवीतु नः
yasmād dharmāt paro dharmo vidyate neha kaścana yo viśiṣṭaś ca bhūtebhyas tad bhavān prabravītu naḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Nandin went to the nether worlds and killed Mithu and the leading Asuras. Bringing his father and others he handed them over to them (Devapi).
अध्याय २३८
धर्मं च संप्रवक्ष्यामि पुराणम् ऋषिभिः स्तुतम् विशिष्टं सर्वधर्मेभ्यः शृणुध्वं मुनिसत्तमाः
dharmaṃ ca saṃpravakṣyāmi purāṇam ṛṣibhiḥ stutam viśiṣṭaṃ sarvadharmebhyaḥ śṛṇudhvaṃ munisattamāḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
The horse sacrifice of the self-possessed Ar§i§ena was performed there. The Fire-god, Rtviks, Devas, Vedas and sages said:

इन्द्रियाणि प्रमाथीनि बुद्ध्या संयम्य तत्त्वतः सर्वतः प्रसृतानीह पिता बालान् इवात्मजान्
indriyāṇi pramāthīni buddhyā saṃyamya tattvataḥ sarvataḥ prasṛtānīha pitā bālān ivātmajān

Restraining with the intellect, in truth, the tormenting senses that have spread out in every direction, as a father restrains his young children —
अध्याय २३८
मनसश् चेन्द्रियाणां चाप्य् ऐकाग्र्यं परमं तपः विज्ञेयः सर्वधर्मेभ्यः स धर्मः पर उच्यते
manasaś cendriyāṇāṃ cāpy aikāgryaṃ paramaṃ tapaḥ vijñeyaḥ sarvadharmebhyaḥ sa dharmaḥ para ucyate
हिन्दी अर्थ

English
one-pointedness of mind and senses is the highest austerity; it is to be known as higher than all dharmas and is called the supreme dharma.
अध्याय २३८
तानि सर्वाणि संधाय मनःषष्ठानि मेधया आत्मतृप्तः स एवासीद् बहुचिन्त्यम् अचिन्तयन्
tāni sarvāṇi saṃdhāya manaḥṣaṣṭhāni medhayā ātmatṛptaḥ sa evāsīd bahucintyam acintayan
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
Gathering all of them, with the mind as sixth, through wisdom, he remained content in the Self, not thinking of the many things to be thought of.
अध्याय २३८
गोचरेभ्यो निवृत्तानि यदा स्थास्यन्ति वेश्मनि तदा चैवात्मनात्मानं परं द्रक्ष्यथ शाश्वतम्
gocarebhyo nivṛttāni yadā sthāsyanti veśmani tadā caivātmanātmānaṃ paraṃ drakṣyatha śāśvatam
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
When the senses, turned back from their objects, remain in their abode, then by yourself you will see the supreme, eternal Self.
अध्याय २३८
सर्वात्मानं महात्मानं विधूमम् इव पावकम् प्रपश्यन्ति महात्मानं ब्राह्मणा ये मनीषिणः
sarvātmānaṃ mahātmānaṃ vidhūmam iva pāvakam prapaśyanti mahātmānaṃ brāhmaṇā ye manīṣiṇaḥ

The wise brahmins behold the great Self, the Self of all, like a fire without smoke.
अध्याय २३८
यथा पुष्पफलोपेतो बहुशाखो महाद्रुमः आत्मनो नाभिजानीते क्व मे पुष्पं क्व मे फलम्
yathā puṣpaphalopeto bahuśākho mahādrumaḥ ātmano nābhijānīte kva me puṣpaṃ kva me phalam

As a great tree with many branches, laden with flowers and fruits, does not itself know where its flowers are or where its fruits,

एवम् आत्मा न जानीते क्व गमिष्ये कुतो ऽन्व् अहम् अन्यो ह्य् अस्यान्तरात्मास्ति यः सर्वम् अनुपश्यति
evam ātmā na jānīte kva gamiṣye kuto 'nv aham anyo hy asyāntarātmāsti yaḥ sarvam anupaśyati

so the individual self does not know where it will go or where it came from; there is another, its inner Self, who sees all.
अध्याय २३८
ज्ञानदीपेन दीप्तेन पश्यत्य् आत्मानम् आत्मना दृष्ट्वात्मानं तथा यूयं विरागा भवत द्विजाः
jñānadīpena dīptena paśyaty ātmānam ātmanā dṛṣṭvātmānaṃ tathā yūyaṃ virāgā bhavata dvijāḥ

With the blazing lamp of knowledge one sees the Self by the self. Having seen the Self, O brahmins, become free of passion,
अध्याय २३८
विमुक्ताः सर्वपापेभ्यो मुक्तत्वच इवोरगाः परां बुद्धिम् अवाप्येहाप्य् अचिन्ता विगतज्वराः
vimuktāḥ sarvapāpebhyo muktatvaca ivoragāḥ parāṃ buddhim avāpyehāpy acintā vigatajvarāḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
released from all sins like snakes that have cast their skins; attaining supreme understanding here, be free of anxiety and fever.
अध्याय २३८
सर्वतःस्रोतसं घोरां नदीं लोकप्रवाहिणीम् पञ्चेन्द्रियग्राहवतीं मनःसंकल्परोधसम्
sarvataḥsrotasaṃ ghorāṃ nadīṃ lokapravāhiṇīm pañcendriyagrāhavatīṃ manaḥsaṃkalparodhasam

The terrible river that flows through the world, with currents on every side, with the five senses as its crocodiles and the mind's intentions as its banks,

लोभमोहतृणच्छन्नां कामक्रोधसरीसृपाम् सत्यतीर्थानृतक्षोभां क्रोधपङ्कां सरिद्वराम्
lobhamohatṛṇacchannāṃ kāmakrodhasarīsṛpām satyatīrthānṛtakṣobhāṃ krodhapaṅkāṃ saridvarām

covered with the grass of greed and delusion, with desire and anger as its serpents, truth as its landing place and falsehood as its turbulence, anger as its mud — that best of rivers,

अव्यक्तप्रभवां शीघ्रां कामक्रोधसमाकुलाम् प्रतरध्वं नदीं बुद्ध्या दुस्तराम् अकृतात्मभिः
avyaktaprabhavāṃ śīghrāṃ kāmakrodhasamākulām prataradhvaṃ nadīṃ buddhyā dustarām akṛtātmabhiḥ

rising from the unmanifest, swift, full of desire and anger — cross that river by the intellect, hard for the undisciplined to cross,

संसारसागरगमां योनिपातालदुस्तराम् आत्मजन्मोद्भवां तां तु जिह्वावर्तदुरासदाम्
saṃsārasāgaragamāṃ yonipātāladustarām ātmajanmodbhavāṃ tāṃ tu jihvāvartadurāsadām

flowing to the ocean of worldly existence, with the netherworld of births hard to pass, arising from one's own birth, hard to approach with the whirlpool of the tongue.
अध्याय २३८
यां तरन्ति कृतप्रज्ञा धृतिमन्तो मनीषिणः तां तीर्णः सर्वतो मुक्तो विधूतात्मात्मवाञ् शुचिः
yāṃ taranti kṛtaprajñā dhṛtimanto manīṣiṇaḥ tāṃ tīrṇaḥ sarvato mukto vidhūtātmātmavāñ śuciḥ

The wise, of perfected understanding and steadfast, cross it; having crossed it, one is free on every side, cleansed, self-possessed and pure,

उत्तमां बुद्धिम् आस्थाय ब्रह्मभूयाय कल्पते उत्तीर्णः सर्वसंक्लेशान् प्रसन्नात्मा विकल्मषः
uttamāṃ buddhim āsthāya brahmabhūyāya kalpate uttīrṇaḥ sarvasaṃkleśān prasannātmā vikalmaṣaḥ

and resting in the highest understanding becomes fit for union with Brahman; having crossed beyond all afflictions, serene and stainless,

भूयिष्ठानीव भूतानि सर्वस्थानान् निरीक्ष्य च अक्रुध्यन्न् अप्रसीदंश् च ननृशंसमतिस् तथा
bhūyiṣṭhānīva bhūtāni sarvasthānān nirīkṣya ca akrudhyann aprasīdaṃś ca nanṛśaṃsamatis tathā

looking on beings of every place as if from a height, neither angry nor elated, and without cruelty of mind,

ततो द्रक्ष्यथ सर्वेषां भूतानां प्रभवाप्ययम् एतद् धि सर्वधर्मेभ्यो विशिष्टं मेनिरे बुधाः
tato drakṣyatha sarveṣāṃ bhūtānāṃ prabhavāpyayam etad dhi sarvadharmebhyo viśiṣṭaṃ menire budhāḥ

then you will see the origin and dissolution of all beings. This the wise have held to be superior to all dharmas —
अध्याय २३८
धर्मं धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठा मुनयः सत्यदर्शिनः आत्मानो व्यापिनो विप्रा इति पुत्रानुशासनम्
dharmaṃ dharmabhṛtāṃ śreṣṭhā munayaḥ satyadarśinaḥ ātmāno vyāpino viprā iti putrānuśāsanam

English
this dharma, O best of those who uphold dharma, sages who see the truth, of the all-pervading Self, O brahmins; such is the teaching for sons.
अध्याय २३८
प्रयताय प्रवक्तव्यं हितायानुगताय च आत्मज्ञानम् इदं गुह्यं सर्वगुह्यतमं महत्

It should be told to one who is restrained, well-meaning and devoted. This knowledge of the Self is secret, the greatest and most secret of all.
अध्याय २३८
अब्रवं यद् अहं विप्रा आत्मसाक्षिकम् अञ्जसा नैव स्त्री न पुमान् एवं न चैवेदं नपुंसकम्

What I have told you, O brahmins, is plainly witnessed by the Self itself. Brahman is neither woman nor man, nor is it neuter;

अदुःखम् असुखं ब्रह्म भूतभव्यभवात्मकम् नैतज् ज्ञात्वा पुमान् स्त्री वा पुनर्भवम् अवाप्नुयात्
aduḥkham asukhaṃ brahma bhūtabhavyabhavātmakam naitaj jñātvā pumān strī vā punarbhavam avāpnuyāt

Brahman is without sorrow and without pleasure, the essence of past, future and present. Knowing it, neither man nor woman comes to birth again.
अध्याय २३८
यथा मतानि सर्वाणि तथैतानि यथा तथा कथितानि मया विप्रा भवन्ति न भवन्ति च
yathā matāni sarvāṇi tathaitāni yathā tathā kathitāni mayā viprā bhavanti na bhavanti ca
हिन्दी अर्थ

As all the doctrines are, so have I told these as they are, O brahmins; they are and they are not.
अध्याय २३८
तत्प्रीतियुक्तेन गुणान्वितेन पुत्रेण सत्पुत्रदयान्वितेन दृष्ट्वा हितं प्रीतमना यदर्थं ब्रूयात् सुतस्येह यद् उक्तम् एतत्
tatprītiyuktena guṇānvitena putreṇa satputradayānvitena dṛṣṭvā hitaṃ prītamanā yadarthaṃ brūyāt sutasyeha yad uktam etat

English
This is what a father, glad at heart, would tell his son, seeing his good — a son full of love, endowed with virtues, and with the kindness of a good son.
अध्याय २३८
मोक्षः पितामहेनोक्त उपायान् नानुपायतः तम् उपायं यथान्यायं श्रोतुम् इच्छामहे मुने
mokṣaḥ pitāmahenokta upāyān nānupāyataḥ tam upāyaṃ yathānyāyaṃ śrotum icchāmahe mune

"The Grandsire declared that liberation comes through a means, not without one; we wish to hear that means duly, O sage."
अध्याय २३८
अस्मासु तन् महाप्राज्ञा युक्तं निपुणदर्शनम् यदुपायेन सर्वार्थान् मृगयध्वं सदानघाः
asmāsu tan mahāprājñā yuktaṃ nipuṇadarśanam yadupāyena sarvārthān mṛgayadhvaṃ sadānaghāḥ
हिन्दी अर्थ
इदं मयोक्तं प्रवरं पुराणं पापापहं धर्मविवर्धनं च। श्रुतं भवद्भिः परमं रहस्यमाज्ञापयध्वं मुनयो व्रजामि ।
English
"That is fitting in you, O wise ones — a subtle insight, that you always seek all aims through a means, sinless ones.
अध्याय २३८
घटोपकरणे बुद्धिर् घटोत्पत्तौ न सा मता एवं धर्माद्युपायार्थे नान्यधर्मेषु कारणम्
ghaṭopakaraṇe buddhir ghaṭotpattau na sā matā evaṃ dharmādyupāyārthe nānyadharmeṣu kāraṇam

The intention to make a pot's tools is not held to be the making of the pot; so the means to dharma and the rest is not the cause in other dharmas.
अध्याय २३८
पूर्वे समुद्रे यः पन्था न स गच्छति पश्चिमम् एकः पन्था हि मोक्षस्य तच् छृणुध्वं ममानघाः
pūrve samudre yaḥ panthā na sa gacchati paścimam ekaḥ panthā hi mokṣasya tac chṛṇudhvaṃ mamānaghāḥ

The path to the eastern sea does not lead to the western; there is one path to liberation — hear it from me, sinless ones.
अध्याय २३८
क्षमया क्रोधम् उच्छिन्द्यात् कामं संकल्पवर्जनात् सत्त्वसंसेवनाद् धीरो निद्राम् उच्छेत्तुम् अर्हति
kṣamayā krodham ucchindyāt kāmaṃ saṃkalpavarjanāt sattvasaṃsevanād dhīro nidrām ucchettum arhati

By forbearance one should cut off anger, and desire by giving up intentions; the steadfast should cut off sleep by cultivating sattva.

अप्रमादाद् भयं रक्षेद् रक्षेत् क्षेत्रं च संविदम् इच्छां द्वेषं च कामं च धैर्येण विनिवर्तयेत्
apramādād bhayaṃ rakṣed rakṣet kṣetraṃ ca saṃvidam icchāṃ dveṣaṃ ca kāmaṃ ca dhairyeṇa vinivartayet

निद्रां च प्रतिभां चैव ज्ञानाभ्यासेन तत्त्ववित् उपद्रवांस् तथा योगी हितजीर्णमिताशनात्
