इति श्रागारुडे महापुराणे पूर्वखण्डे प्रथमांशाख्ये आचारकाण्डे याज्ञवल्क्योक्तगृहल्थधर्मनिर्णयो नाम पञ्चनवतितमो ऽध्यायः श्रागरुडमहापुराणम्- ९६ याज्ञवल्क्य उवाच ।वक्ष्ये सङ्करजात्यादिगृहस्थादि विधिं परम् ।विप्रान्मूर्धावषिक्तो हि क्षात्त्रियायां विशः स्त्रियाम्

गायसे सूँघा गया, पक्षियोंके द्वारा उच्छिष्ट और जानकर पैरसे छुआ गया अन्न भी त्यागने योग्य

जातो ऽम्बष्ठस्तु शूद्रायां निषादः पर्वतो ऽपि वा ।माहिष्यः क्षत्त्रियाज्जातो वैश्यायां म्लेच्छसंज्ञितः

jāto 'mbaṣṭhastu śūdrāyāṃ niṣādaḥ parvato 'pi vā / māhiṣyaḥ kṣattriyājjāto vaiśyāyāṃ mlecchasaṃjñitaḥ

चाहिए। मनुष्यको सर्वदा धर्मका ही आचरण होता है। यद्यपि शूद्रका अन्न नहीं लेना चाहिए,

There are many types of marriages among them; the Brahma type is Chat in which the bridegroom is invited and a girl bedecked according to capacity is given in marriage. A son born of that girl sanctifies twentyone generations on either side.

शूद्राज्जातस्तु चाण्डालः सर्ववर्णविगर्हितः ।क्षत्त्रिया मागधं वैश्याच्छूद्रा क्षत्तारमेव च

śūdrājjātastu cāṇḍālaḥ sarvavarṇavigarhitaḥ / kṣattriyā māgadhaṃ vaiśyācchūdrā kṣattārameva ca

हिन्दी अर्थ

दिया जाता है, वह 'संघुष्ट' कहा जाता है।

English

A marriage In which the advice, **both of you carry on your sacred duties together'' is given, is called Sakama (with love) marriage. A son born of that wedlock sanctifies six generations including himself.

शूद्रादयोगवं वैश्या जनयामास वै सुतम् ।माहिष्येण करण्यां तु रथकारः प्रजायते

śūdrādayogavaṃ vaiśyā janayāmāsa vai sutam / māhiṣyeṇa karaṇyāṃ tu rathakāraḥ prajāyate

हिन्दी अर्थ

३-पर्यायान्न--किसी दूसरेके उद्देश्यसे रखा भोजन यदि बिना उसकी स्वीकृतिके दूसरेको दिया जाय तो ऐसे अन्नको

The first four types of marriage arc recommended for brahmins; the Gandharva and the Raksa type for kings; the Asura type for vaiiyas and the despicable last type for the judras.

असत्सन्तस्तु वै ज्ञेयाः प्रतिलोमानुलोमजाः ।जात्युत्कर्षाद्द्विजो ज्ञेयः सप्तमे पञ्चमे ऽपि वा

asatsantastu vai jñeyāḥ pratilomānulomajāḥ / jātyutkarṣāddvijo jñeyaḥ saptame pañcame 'pi vā

हिन्दी अर्थ

“चर्यायात्र” कहा जाता है।

If a brahmin marries a brahmin girl, the hands are clasped together; if a ksatriya girl, she catches hold of an arrow the other end of which is held by the bridegroom; the vaiiya girl holds a goad.

व्यत्यये कर्मणां साम्यं पूर्ववच्चोत्तरावरम् ।कर्म स्मार्तं विवाहाग्नौ कुर्वीत प्रत्यहं गृही

vyatyaye karmaṇāṃ sāmyaṃ pūrvavaccottarāvaram / karma smārtaṃ vivāhāgnau kurvīta pratyahaṃ gṛhī

हिन्दी अर्थ

तथापि जो शूद्र परम्परासे ही अपने यहाँ सेवक है, गोपालन करनेवाला है, कुल-परम्परासे ही जो मित्रके समान व्यवहार करनेवाला है, परम्परासे अपने यहाँ हलवाहेका काम करनेवाला है,

The father, the grandfather, brother, a kinsman or the mother gives away the girl in marriage; the latter in case the former is not available.

श्लोक 8

दायकालादृते वापि श्रौतं वैतानिकाग्निषु ।शरीरचिन्तां निर्वर्त्य कृतशौचविधिर्द्विजः

dāyakālādṛte vāpi śrautaṃ vaitānikāgniṣu / śarīracintāṃ nirvartya kṛtaśaucavidhirdvijaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

कुल-परम्परासे जो निर्धारित नाई हे--इनके अतिरिक्त वह शूद्र जिसने मन, वाणी, शरीर एवं कर्मसे सर्वथा अपनेको समर्पित कर रखा है-- ऐसे शूद्रोंका अन्न स्वीकार किया जा सकता है ।

A father not giving a daughter in marriage, incurs the sin of Bhrunahatya (murder of the foetus) at every men¬ strual period. If no one gives her away in marriage, the girl is at liberty to choose her own lover.

प्रातः सन्ध्यामुपासीत दन्तधावनपूर्वकम् ।हुत्वाग्नौ सर्यदेवत्याञ्जपेन्मन्त्रान्समाहितः

prātaḥ sandhyāmupāsīta dantadhāvanapūrvakam / hutvāgnau saryadevatyāñjapenmantrānsamāhitaḥ

घी आदि स्रिग्ध पदार्थोसे युक्त अन्न यदि बासी है या बहुत कालसे रखा हुआ है तो भी ग्रहण करने योग्य होता है । किंतु घृत या तेल आदिसे संमिश्रित न होनेपर भी गेहूँ, जौ और गोरससे

A girl can be given in marriage only once; a person who abducts a girl should be punished like a thief; if an un« sullied girl is forsaken he should be punished. A fallen girl should be forsaken at once.

वेदार्थानधिगच्छेच्च शास्त्राणि विविधानि च ।योगक्षोमादिसिद्ध्यर्थमुपेयादीश्वरं गृही

vedārthānadhigacchecca śāstrāṇi vividhāni ca / yogakṣomādisiddhyarthamupeyādīśvaraṃ gṛhī

हिन्दी अर्थ

गये हैं, तब भी ग्रहण किये जा सकते हैं; यदि विकृत न हुए हों।

English

A wife found guilty of adultery shall be compelled to wear dirty garments, shall be given only a single morsel daily, shall be rebuked and forced to lie on tlie bare ground.

श्लोक 11

स्नात्वा देवान्पितॄंश्चैव तर्पयेदर्चयेत्तथा ।वेदानथ पुराणानि सेतिहासानि शक्तितः

snātvā devānpitṝṃścaiva tarpayedarcayettathā / vedānatha purāṇāni setihāsāni śaktitaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

देव और अतिथिको बिना समर्पित किया हुआ तिल-तण्डुलमिश्रित पदार्थ, यवागू, खीर, पुआ तथा पूड़ीका भोजन व्यर्थ हो जाता है।

English

The moon god has blessed women with purity; Gandharva has blessed them with sweet speech. Fire is always pure and women are always pure.

श्लोक 12

जपयज्ञानुसिद्ध्यर्थं विद्यां चाध्यात्मिकीं जपेत् ।बलिकर्मस्वधाहोमस्वाध्यायातिथिसक्रियाः

japayajñānusiddhyarthaṃ vidyāṃ cādhyātmikīṃ japet / balikarmasvadhāhomasvādhyāyātithisakriyāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

पदार्थोंका सेवन करनेपर चान्द्रायणव्रत करना चाहिए। जो पुरुष पशु-हत्या करता है, वह पशुके रोम- परिमित कालतक घोर यातनाओंको सहन करते हुए नरकमें वास करता है। अभोज्य पदार्थोका

If a woman subjects herself to abortion, except in the case of adultery and for purposes of expiation, she becomes guilty of two great sins the murder of the foetus and the murder of her husband.

भूतपित्रमरब्रह्ममनुष्याणां महामखाः ।देवेभ्यस्तु हुतं चाग्नौ क्षिपेद्भूतबलिं हरेत्

bhūtapitramarabrahmamanuṣyāṇāṃ mahāmakhāḥ / devebhyastu hutaṃ cāgnau kṣipedbhūtabaliṃ haret

हिन्दी अर्थ

परित्याग करके अपनी सद्रतिकी भावनासे प्रभुसे क्षमा-याचना और प्रार्थना करता हुआ व्यक्ति भगवानको प्राप्त करता है। (अध्याय ९६)

A wife addicted to wine, suiTering from incurable diseases or inimically inclined can be forsaken. A wife of sweet speech should be maintained. Othirwisc, O sages, great sin will result.

श्लोक 14

अन्नं भूमौश्वचाण्डालवायसेभ्यश्च निः क्षिपेत् ।अन्नं पितृमनुष्येभ्यो देयमप्यन्वहं जलम्

annaṃ bhūmauśvacāṇḍālavāyasebhyaśca niḥ kṣipet / annaṃ pitṛmanuṣyebhyo deyamapyanvahaṃ jalam

याज्ञवल्क्यजीने कहा--हे श्रेष्ठ मुनिजनो! अब मैं द्रव्य-शुद्धिका वर्णन कर रहा हूँ । आप सब उसका ज्ञान प्राप्त करें।

मनुष्यको स्नान करनेके बाद, जल पीनेके इन पाँच अवस्थाओंमें आचमन नहीं करे, अपितु बाद, छींक आनेके बाद, शयनोपरान्त, भोजन दक्षिण कानका स्पर्श कर ले। ब्राह्मणके दक्षिण करनेपर, मार्गमें चलनेपर तथा वस्त्र बदलनेपर कानपर अग्नि आदि देवता सहैव विराजमान
