इति श्रीलिङ्गमहापुराणे पूर्वभागे वराहप्रादुर्भावो नाम चतुर्नवतितमो ऽध्यायः नृसिंहेन हतः पूर्वं हिरण्याक्षाग्रजः श्रुतम् कथं निषूदितस्तेन हिरण्यकशिपुर्वद

हिन्दी अर्थ

श्रीवीरभद्र बोले--हे भगवन्! है माधव! आप तो जगत्के सुखके लिये अवतीर्ण हुए हैं; श्रेष्ठ ब्रह्मने संसारकी स्थितिके कार्यमें आपको लगाया है। पूर्वकालमें अपनी पूँछमें नावको बाँधकर विशाल

श्लोक 2

हिरण्यकशिपोः पुत्रः प्रह्राद इति विश्रुतः धर्मज्ञः सत्यसम्पन्नस् तपस्वी चाभवत्सुधीः

hiraṇyakaśipoḥ putraḥ prahrāda iti viśrutaḥ dharmajñaḥ satyasampannas tapasvī cābhavatsudhīḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

सागरमें भ्रमण करते हुए मत्स्यरूपधारी आप भगवान् विष्णु-ने जीव-समुदायकी रक्षा की थी। आप कूर्मके रूपसे जगत्को धारण करते हैं और वाराहरूपके द्वारा आपने पृथ्वीका उद्धार किया है। आपने इस सिंहरूपसे हिरण्यकशिपुका वध किया है। आपने वामनरूप धारणकर तीन पगोंद्वारा त्रिलोकोको मापकर बलिको बाँध लिया था

श्लोक 3

जन्मप्रभृति देवेशं पूजयामास चाव्ययम् सर्वज्ञं सर्वगं विष्णुं सर्वदेवभवोद्भवम्

janmaprabhṛti deveśaṃ pūjayāmāsa cāvyayam sarvajñaṃ sarvagaṃ viṣṇuṃ sarvadevabhavodbhavam

हिन्दी अर्थ

आप ही सभी प्राणियोंको उत्पन्न करनेवाले, सबके स्वामी और अविनाशी हैं। जब-जब संसारपर कोई विपत्ति पड़ी है, तब-तब आपने अवतार लेकर उसे दुःखरहित किया है। है हरे! है शिवपरायण!

Ever since his birth he devoutly worshipped the unchanging omniscieiil Visnn who is lord of Devas, who is omni- present, who is the cause ol origin of all Devas, who is the primordial Purusa, who has the form of Brahman, who is the overlord of Brahma and who is the cause of creation, susten- ance and annihilation.

श्लोक 4

तमादिपुरुषं भक्त्या परब्रह्मस्वरूपिणम् ब्रह्मणो ऽधिपतिं सृष्टिस्थितिसंहारकारणम्

tamādipuruṣaṃ bhaktyā parabrahmasvarūpiṇam brahmaṇo 'dhipatiṃ sṛṣṭisthitisaṃhārakāraṇam

हिन्दी अर्थ

The enemy ofUevas saw that his son was frequently repeating ''O Gtvinda, Obeisance to Nfirayana.'' He observed that his son was devoted to Visnu. I hc demon of inful intellect looked at his son as though he would burn him and said: — "O boy of wicked inicHect, you don't know niv. •' e lord of all Daityas as well as Devas.

श्लोक 5

सो ऽपि विष्णोस्तथाभूतं दृष्ट्वा पुत्रं समाहितम् नमो नारायणायेति गोविन्देति मुहुर्मुहुः

so 'pi viṣṇostathābhūtaṃ dṛṣṭvā putraṃ samāhitam namo nārāyaṇāyeti govindeti muhurmuhuḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

ततोऽधिकं महाघोरं कोपं प्रज्चालयद्धरिः

English

O Prahlada, listen to me if you have any desire to be alive."

अध्याय ९५

श्लोक 6

स्तुवन्तं प्राह देवारिः प्रदहन्निव पापधीः न मां जानासि दुर्बुद्धे सर्वदैत्यामरेश्वरम्

stuvantaṃ prāha devāriḥ pradahanniva pāpadhīḥ na māṃ jānāsi durbuddhe sarvadaityāmareśvaram

हिन्दी अर्थ

शासितं मम सर्वत्र शास्ता कोऽपि न विद्यते मदंशाः शक्तिसम्पन्ना ब्रह्मशक्रादयः सुराः

English

Thus ordered by that Daitya of extremely wicked heart, Danavas hit and struck the undaunted Prahlada who considered himself a servant of the lord of Devas.

श्लोक 7

प्रह्राद वीर दुष्पुत्र द्विजदेवार्तिकारणम् को विष्णुः पद्मजो वापि शक्रश् च वरुणो ऽथवा

prahrāda vīra duṣputra dvijadevārtikāraṇam ko viṣṇuḥ padmajo vāpi śakraś ca varuṇo 'thavā

हिन्दी अर्थ

मन्नाभिपङ्कजाज्जातः पुरा ब्रह्मा चतुर्मुखः। तल्ललाटसमुत्पन्नो भगवान् वृषभध्वजः

English

O excellent brahmins, w'hat had been evilly perpetrated then by tliose Asuras on the son of the king of Daityas became futile, thanks to the brilliance of the lord who lies down in the milk ocean.

श्लोक 8

वायुः सोमस्तथेशानः पावको मम यः समः मामेवार्चय भक्त्या च स्वल्पं नारायणं सदा

vāyuḥ somastatheśānaḥ pāvako mama yaḥ samaḥ māmevārcaya bhaktyā ca svalpaṃ nārāyaṇaṃ sadā

हिन्दी अर्थ

रजसाधिष्ठितः स्त्रष्टा रुद्रस्तामस उच्यते। अहं नियन्ता सर्वस्य मत्परं नास्ति हैवतम् विश्वाधिकः स्वतन्त्रश्च कर्ता हर्ताखिलेश्वरः ।

English

In order to kill Hiranyakasipu who was furious due to his haughtiness, the lord assumed the form of the man-lion and manifested himself there itself. Glancing at the son kindly he hit the father the base Danava. At the very same moment he split him with his sharp daws.

श्लोक 9

प्रह्राद जीविते वाञ्छा तवैषा शृणु चास्ति चेत् श्रुत्वापि तस्य वचनं हिरण्यकशिपोः सुधीः

prahrāda jīvite vāñchā tavaiṣā śṛṇu cāsti cet śrutvāpi tasya vacanaṃ hiraṇyakaśipoḥ sudhīḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

कालोऽस्म्यहं कालविनाशहेतु- लोकान् समाहर्तुमहं प्रवृत्त: ।

English

Then, the dispeller of sins killed that Daitya along w'ith his kinsmen. Like a fire of annihilation at the dose of yugas he harassed the leading Daitya.

अध्याय ९५

श्लोक 10

प्रह्रादः पूजयामास नमो नारायणेति च नमो नारायणायेति सर्वदैत्यकुमारकान्

prahrādaḥ pūjayāmāsa namo nārāyaṇeti ca namo nārāyaṇāyeti sarvadaityakumārakān

हिन्दी अर्थ

जीवन्त्येते मत्प्रसादेन देवाः साहङ्कारमिदं श्रुत्वा हरेरमितविक्रमः। विहस्योवाच सावज्ञं ततो विस्फुरिताधरः

English

O brahmins of good holy rites, the entire universe be- came terrified due to the terrible roar of Nrsimha. All the worlds beginning.with the world of Brahma trembled.

अध्याय ९५

श्लोक 11

अध्यापयामास च तां ब्रह्मविद्यां सुशोभनाम् दुर्लङ्घ्यां चात्मनो दृष्ट्वा शक्रादिभिर् अपि स्वयम्

adhyāpayāmāsa ca tāṃ brahmavidyāṃ suśobhanām durlaṅghyāṃ cātmano dṛṣṭvā śakrādibhir api svayam

हिन्दी अर्थ

अतः है भगवन्! है विश्वात्मन् । है नरसिंह उपस्थितिमें अपने इस अत्यन्त भयानक लीजिये

On seeing Nrsirhha, Devas, Asuras, Nagas, Siddhas, Sadhyas, Visnu, Brahma and others left olf their courage and strength and went off' in different directions in order to pro- tect their lives. When they had gone, the lord Nrsimha who had a thousand shapes, who had all feet and all arms, wlio had a thousand eyes, whose three eyes were the moon, sun and fire, who was the wieldcr of Maya remained there enveloping every thing. The excellent Devas who were stationed on the Lokaloka accompanied by Brahma, Siddhas, Yama and the Maruts, eulogised him.

अध्याय ९५

श्लोक 12

पुत्रेण लङ्घितामाज्ञां हिरण्यः प्राह दानवान् एतं नानाविधैर्वध्यं दुष्पुत्रं हन्तुमर्हथ

putreṇa laṅghitāmājñāṃ hiraṇyaḥ prāha dānavān etaṃ nānāvidhairvadhyaṃ duṣputraṃ hantumarhatha

हिन्दी अर्थ

सूतजी बोले वीरभद्रके द्वारा शान्त वाणीने प्रकार कहे जानेपर नृसिंहरूपधारी विष्णुने पहलेसे र

English

You arc the Brahman that is greater than the greatest. You are the greatest of realities. You are the greatest splendour among all luminaries. You are the greatest Atman. You are identical with the universe.

अध्याय ९५

श्लोक 13

एवमुक्तास्तदा तेन दैत्येन सुदुरात्मना निजघ्नुर्देवदेवस्य भृत्यं प्रह्रादमव्ययम्

evamuktāstadā tena daityena sudurātmanā nijaghnurdevadevasya bhṛtyaṃ prahrādamavyayam

हिन्दी अर्थ

अधिक तथा महाभयानक कोपको प्रज्वलित किया

English

You ure the partaker of sacrifices of sacrificers. You are the lord bestowing fruits on those who perform sacrifices. You assume the form of a fish.®' You are stationed in the universe after assuming the form of a tortoise.®'®

अध्याय ९५

श्लोक 14

तत्र तत्प्रतिकृतं तदा सुरैर् दैत्यराजतनयं द्विजोत्तमाः क्षीरवारिनिधिशायिनः प्रभोर् निष्फलं त्वथ बभूव तेजसा

tatra tatpratikṛtaṃ tadā surair daityarājatanayaṃ dvijottamāḥ kṣīravārinidhiśāyinaḥ prabhor niṣphalaṃ tvatha babhūva tejasā

हिन्दी अर्थ

आये हो, वहाँ चले जाओ; हितकी बात मत बोलो।मै इस समय इस चराचर जगतूका संहार कर

You have assumed the forms of the Boar and the lion for saving the kingdom of Devas by killing the lord of Daityas.

अध्याय ९५

श्लोक 15

तदाथ गर्वभिन्नस्य हिरण्यकशिपोः प्रभुः तत्रैवाविरभूद्धन्तुं नृसिंहाकृतिमास्थितः

tadātha garvabhinnasya hiraṇyakaśipoḥ prabhuḥ tatraivāvirabhūddhantuṃ nṛsiṃhākṛtimāsthitaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

श्रीयुक्त तथा ऊर्जासे परिपूर्ण है, उसे मेरे ही तेजसे परिवधित जानो। देवताओंके परम अर्थको जाननेवाले मेरे महान् सामर्थ्यको जानते हैं। शक्तिसम्पन्न ब्रह्मा, इद्र आदि देवता मेरे ही अंश हैं। पूर्वकालमें चतुर्मुख ब्रह्म

Under the pretext of the curse of brahmin (i.e. Bhrgu) you sportingly incarnated on the earth. Noth.ig is seen as distinctly different from you. You are the whole universe con- sisting of the mobile and immobile beings.

अध्याय ९५

श्लोक 16

जघान च सुतं प्रेक्ष्य पितरं दानवाधमम् बिभेद तत्क्षणादेव करजैर् निशितैः शतैः

jaghāna ca sutaṃ prekṣya pitaraṃ dānavādhamam bibheda tatkṣaṇādeva karajair niśitaiḥ śataiḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

मेरे नाभिकमलसे उत्पन्न हुए थे और उनके ललाट्से भगवान् वृषभध्वज (शिव) उत्पन्न हुए थे ब्रा रजोगुणसे अधिष्ठित हैं। रुद्र तमोगुणसे युक्त कहे जाते हैं। मैं सबका नियन्ता हूँ; मुझसे श्रेष्ठ कोई देवता नहीं है। मैं सबसे बढ़कर हूँ, स्वतन्त्र हूं सबका स्रष्टा हूँ, संहार करनेवाला हुँ तथा सबका स्वामी

You alone arc the universe. O lord, of what avail is mere prattling. C) lord, that which is non*dualistic is stationed m manifold wa.s, due to Maya.

अध्याय ९५

श्लोक 17

ततो निहत्य तं दैत्यं सबान्धवमघापहः पीडयामास दैत्येन्द्रं युगान्ताग्निरिवापरः

tato nihatya taṃ daityaṃ sabāndhavamaghāpahaḥ pīḍayāmāsa daityendraṃ yugāntāgnirivāparaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

हूँ। मेरे इस नृसिंह नामक परम तेजके विषयमें कौन सुनना चाहता है? अत: मेरी शरण प्राप्त करके तुम संतापरहित होकर यहाँसे जाओ; भूतोंके महेश्वर तुम मेरे इस परम भावको समझो ॥ ३२--३४॥

Hosv shall we eulogise you? O lord of the paus! O lord of Devas, how you shine!"

अध्याय ९५

श्लोक 18

नादैस्तस्य नृसिंहस्य घोरैर्वित्रासितं जगत् आ ब्रह्मभुवनाद् विप्राः प्रचचाल च सुव्रताः

nādaistasya nṛsiṃhasya ghorairvitrāsitaṃ jagat ā brahmabhuvanād viprāḥ pracacāla ca suvratāḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

मैं काल हूँ, मैं कालके भी विनाशका कारण हँ. मैं लोकोंका संहार करनेमें प्रवृत्त हूँ। है वीरभद्र! तुम मुझको मृत्युकी भी मृत्यु जानो; ये देवता भी मेरी कृपासे जी रहे हैं सूतजी बोले--विष्णुका यह अहंकारपूर्ण वर्ची सुनकर असीम पराक्रमवाले वीरभद्र स्फुरित ओठोंवाले

In the meantime, Devas including Indra and Brahma came to loril fiiva and eulogised him after informing him about the activities of Visnu who assumed the form of a beast (Lion). I'hen Brahma and others eulogised Paramesvara. They sought refuge in him who is the great cause, lor saving their souls. दृष्ट्वा सुरासुरमहोरगसिद्धसाध्यास् तस्मिन् क्षणे हरिविरिञ्चिमुखा नृसिंहम् धैर्यं बलं च समवाप्य ययुर्विसृज्य आ दिङ्मुखान्तम् असुरक्षणतत्पराश् च

dṛṣṭvā surāsuramahoragasiddhasādhyās tasmin kṣaṇe hariviriñcimukhā nṛsiṃham dhairyaṃ balaṃ ca samavāpya yayurvisṛjya ā diṅmukhāntam asurakṣaṇatatparāś ca

संहारकर्ताका संहार अपनेसे अथवा दूसरेसे भी नहीं हो सकता है। सभी जगह मेरा ही शासन है; अन्य कोई भी शासन करनेवाला नहीं है। मेरी कृपासे सम्पूर्ण जग् मर्यादायुक्त होकर क्रियाशील है; मैं ही सभी शक्तियोंका

tatastairgataiḥ saiṣa devo nṛsiṃhaḥ sahasrākṛtiḥ sarvapāt sarvabāhuḥ sahasrekṣaṇaḥ somasūryāgninetras tadā saṃsthitaḥ sarvamāvṛtya māyī

taṃ tuṣṭuvuḥ suraśreṣṭhā lokā lokācale sthitāḥ sabrahmakāḥ sasādhyāś ca sayamāḥ samarudgaṇāḥ

असद्वादो विवादश्च विनाशस्त्वयि केवलः॥ ३७ श्रीवीरभद्र बोले क्या आप संहारकर्ता, पिनाकधारी विश्वेश्वर (शिव)-को नहीं जानते हैं? मिथ्या वाद- तबान्योन्यावताराणि कानि शेषाणि साम्प्रतम्। विवाद आपके लिये केवल विनाशस्वरूप ही है। जिस

परात्परतरं ब्रह्म तत्त्वात् तत्त्वतमं भवान् ज्योतिषां तु परं ज्योतिः परमात्मा जगन्मयः

parātparataraṃ brahma tattvāt tattvatamaṃ bhavān jyotiṣāṃ tu paraṃ jyotiḥ paramātmā jaganmayaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

कृतानि येन केनापि कथाशेषो भविष्यति प्रकृतिस्त्वं पुमान् रुद्रस्त्वयि वीर्य समाहितम्।

स्थूलं सूक्ष्मं सुसूक्ष्मं च शब्दब्रह्ममयः शुभः वागतीतो निरालंबो निर्द्वन्द्वो निरुपप्लवः

sthūlaṃ sūkṣmaṃ susūkṣmaṃ ca śabdabrahmamayaḥ śubhaḥ vāgatīto nirālaṃbo nirdvandvo nirupaplavaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

सृष्ट्यर्थन जगत्पूर्वं शङ्करं नीललोहितम्। ललाटे चिन्तयामास तपस्युग्रे व्यवस्थित:

Obeisance to Kala of dark complexion; obeisanc e to the destroyer of Kala; obeisance to lord Midhustama®'® (bounti- ful ): obeisance to you Sitikantha (blue-nccked).

श्लोक 24

यज्ञभुग्यज्ञमूर्तिस्त्वं यज्ञिनां फलदः प्रभुः भवान्मत्स्याकृतिः कौर्मम् आस्थाय जगति स्थितः

yajñabhugyajñamūrtistvaṃ yajñināṃ phaladaḥ prabhuḥ bhavānmatsyākṛtiḥ kaurmam āsthāya jagati sthitaḥ

हिन्दी अर्थ

अंशोऽहं देवदेवस्य महाभैरवरूपिणः अहङ्कारावलेपेन गर्जसि त्वमतन्द्रितः। उपकारो ह्वासाधूनामपकाराय केवलम्

Obeisance to you the great one; to the perpetual destroyer of Daityas; obeisance to Tara®®® (redeemer) and to Sutara (the excellent redeemer); obeisance to 'Parana (one engaged in redeeming sinners).

श्लोक 25

वाराहीं चैव तां सैंहीम् आस्थायेहव्यवस्थितः देवानां देवरक्षार्थं निहत्य दितिजेश्वरम्

vārāhīṃ caiva tāṃ saiṃhīm āsthāyehavyavasthitaḥ devānāṃ devarakṣārthaṃ nihatya ditijeśvaram

हिन्दी अर्थ

यदि सिंह महेशानं स्वपुनर्भूत मन्यसे। नत्वं स्रष्टा न संहर्ता न स्वतन्त्रो हि कुत्रचित्

Obeisance to Harikesa (one with tawny hair); obeis- ance to Sambhii the groat Atman; obeisance to you the benefactor ol Devas; obeisance to one the benefactor of living beings.

द्विजशापच्छलेनैवम् अवतीर्णो ऽसि लीलया न दृष्टं यत्त्वदन्यं हि भवान् सर्वं चराचरम्

dvijaśāpacchalenaivam avatīrṇo 'si līlayā na dṛṣṭaṃ yattvadanyaṃ hi bhavān sarvaṃ carācaram

हिन्दी अर्थ

हरहारलतामध्ये मुग्ध कस्मान्त बुध्यसे। विस्मृतं किं तदंशेन दंष्ट्रोत्यातनपीडितः वाराहविग्रहस्तेऽद्य साक्रोशं तारकारिणा। द्धोऽसि यस्य शूलाग्रे विष्वक्सेनच्छलाद्भवान्

भवान्विष्णुर्भवान् रुद्रो भवानेव पितामहः भवानादिर्भवानन्तो भवानेव वयं विभो

bhavānviṣṇurbhavān rudro bhavāneva pitāmahaḥ bhavānādirbhavānanto bhavāneva vayaṃ vibho

हिन्दी अर्थ

किसी प्रकारसे आपके द्वारा लिये गये विभिन्न अवतारोंमें कौन शेष रह गये हैं; अब तो केवल आप ही बचे हुए हैं। आप इस दोषको देखिये, जो आप इस दशाको प्राप्त हुए हैं। संहारमें दक्ष उन शिव-के द्वारा आप क्षणभरमें
