इति श्रीमार्कण्डेयपुराणे सृष्टिप्रकारणनामाष्टचत्वारिंशो ऽध्यायः ऊनपञ्चाशो ऽध्यायः- ४९ क्रौष्टुकिरुवाच अर्वाक्स्त्रोतस्तु कथितो भवता यस्तु मानुषः ।ब्रह्मन् ! विस्तरतो ब्रूहि ब्रह्मा समसृजद्यथा

iti śrīmārkaṇḍeyapurāṇe sṛṣṭiprakāraṇanāmāṣṭacatvāriṃśo 'dhyāyaḥ ūnapañcāśo 'dhyāyaḥ- 49 krauṣṭukiruvāca arvākstrotastu kathito bhavatā yastu mānuṣaḥ / brahman ! vistarato brūhi brahmā samasṛjadyathā

पर्वतोदधिसेविन्यो ह्यनिकेतास्तु सर्वशः ।ता वै निष्कामचारिण्यो नित्यं मुदितमानसाः

ऋषि कहते हैं-- । १ ॥। चण्ड और मुण्ड नामक हैत्योंके मारे जाने तथा बहुत-सी सेनाका संहार हो जानेपर हैत्योंके राजा प्रतापी शुम्भके मनमें बड़ा क्रोध हुआ और उसने हैत्योंकी सम्पूर्ण सेनाको युद्धके लिये कूच करनेकी आज्ञा दी ।। २-३ ।। वह बोला--“आज उदायुध नामके छियासी हैत्य-सेनापति अपनी सेनाओंके साथ युद्धके लिये प्रस्थान करें।

पिशाचोरगरक्षांसि तथा मत्सरिणो जनाः ।पशवः पक्षिणश्चैव नक्रा मत्स्याः सरीसृपाः
