In the face of it, these two versions appear to be inconsistent, but, there is really no such inconsistency. The first verse takes its standpoint from the reign of king Parikit, who was contemporary of king SomAdi and counts the future kings from that point, as the Viu PurAna has done. From 8omSdi upto Ripunjaya, the aggregate of the reigns is 1,000 years and the number of kings is 22 (or rather 32) though ten names have dropped, three of whom however have been supplied by Mr. Pargiter, and others may be found if further search be made. The second verse takes its standpoint from Senajit's reign, consistently with its assertion, that ttte Pur&pa was recited towards the end of the reign of Sen&jit, or, to use its own words " Sentijit, had just passed away," and the total number of kings is really, sixteen, from that date and their aggregate period of reign is 723 years. Thus both the figures 1000 and 723 years are correct, the starting points of counting being different.
