Seven Days of Focus

एकाग्रता के सात दिन

Read seven verses from the Gita on a steady, gathered mind, one a day.

  1. मूल श्लोक (Original Sanskrit)

    व्यवसायात्मिका बुद्धिरेकेह कुरुनन्दन।बहुशाखा ह्यनन्ताश्च बुद्धयोऽव्यवसायिनाम्

Literal TranslationIn this (Karma Yoga), O Arjuna, the resolute mind is single-pointed; the minds of the irresolute are multi-branched and endless.

    Context (प्रसंग)

Krishna contrasts a resolved mind with a scattered one.

    Simple Explanation (सरल अर्थ)

A mind with one clear resolve is steady. A mind pulled in many directions has little rest.

    Pause and Think (आत्म-चिंतन)

“What is one aim you could name today so your attention has somewhere to settle?”

    Optional Action Step (दैनिक अभ्यास)

Write one sentence naming the single thing you most want to finish today.

  2. मूल श्लोक (Original Sanskrit)

    कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि

Literal TranslationYou have the right to work alone, but not to the fruits of it. Do not be driven by the results of your work, nor have attachment to inaction.

    Context (प्रसंग)

Krishna tells Arjuna where his responsibility lies.

    Simple Explanation (सरल अर्थ)

The verse points the mind at the action in front of you, away from worry over results.

    Pause and Think (आत्म-चिंतन)

“Where does your attention go while you work: to the task, or to how it will turn out?”

    Optional Action Step (दैनिक अभ्यास)

Give 15 minutes to the next useful step of one task, without checking how it is going.

  3. मूल श्लोक (Original Sanskrit)

    योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय।सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्योः समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते

Literal TranslationAbandoning attachment and established in Yoga, perform works, viewing success and failure with an even mind. Evenness of mind is said to be Yoga.

    Context (प्रसंग)

    Equanimity in action.

    Simple Explanation (सरल अर्थ)

Acting from steadiness, not clinging, lets success and failure be received with equal calm.

Literal TranslationOne should raise oneself by one's own mind and not allow oneself to sink; for the mind alone is the friend of the self, and the mind alone is the foe of the self.

    Context (प्रसंग)

The mind as friend and obstacle.

    Simple Explanation (सरल अर्थ)

One’s own mind can lift a person up or pull them down.

Literal TranslationWherever the fickle and unsteady mind wanders, one should subdue it and then bring it back under the control of the self alone.

    Context (प्रसंग)

    Restlessness and returning.

Whenever the mind wanders, bring it back gently.

    Pause and Think (आत्म-चिंतन)

  7. मूल श्लोक (Original Sanskrit)

    आपूर्यमाणमचलप्रतिष्ठंसमुद्रमापः प्रविशन्ति यद्वत्।तद्वत्कामा यं प्रविशन्ति सर्वेस शान्तिमाप्नोति न कामकामी

Literal TranslationHe into whom all desires enter, just as the waters enter the full and undisturbed sea, attains peace, and not he who longs after objects of desire.

    Context (प्रसंग)

The sea as an image of the steady mind.

    Simple Explanation (सरल अर्थ)

Waters flow into a full, unmoving ocean without disturbing it. A steady mind receives experiences in the same way.

    Pause and Think (आत्म-चिंतन)

“What would it feel like to let today’s demands arrive without being carried off by them?”
