The Yoga of the Field and Knower of the Field · क्षेत्रक्षेत्रज्ञविभागयोग

35 verses · about 26 min study

Narrative Context: Beginning the final six chapters (focusing on the nature of reality and discernment), Krishna introduces the critical distinction between the Field (Kshetra—the body, mind, senses, and emotions) and the Knower of the Field (Kshetrajna—the unattached witnessing consciousness).

Central Conflict: The confusion between our changing psychophysical instruments and our unchanging conscious core.

Dialogue Participants
Speaker: Krishna dissects the objective field and subjective consciousness; Sanjaya narrates.
Listener: Arjuna listens as student; Dhritarashtra hears through Sanjaya.
Central questions
“How can one clearly differentiate between the changing world of thoughts and the unchanging witness within?”
  • What constitutes the "Field" of human experience (the body, desires, intelligence, ego)?
  • What is the true nature of the "Knower of the Field" that witnesses all bodily and mental states?
  • What are the twenty virtues that constitute genuine spiritual wisdom?
Recommended Background
Marks the opening of the final third of the Gita, focusing on discrimination (Viveka).

The Field & The Witness (क्षेत्र व क्षेत्रज्ञ का भेद)

Central Inquiry (केंद्रीय प्रश्न)
“What parts of our experience are objects rather than the true self?”
Major Concepts (प्रमुख अवधारणाएँ)
KshetraKshetrajnaVikara (Modifications)

Transition: Krishna defines the specific psychological attitudes that constitute true knowing.

Chapter Conclusion & Synthesis · उपसंहार

Chapter 13 provides the ultimate diagnostic tool for psychological freedom: you are not your grief, anxiety, or bodily ailments; you are the silent witness observing them.
