Self-satisfaction is the disease. 'I have done what was to be done' is the dangerous sentence. Attachment to the fruit prevents recognition of the fruit's exhaustion. When merit ends, the satisfied fall.
Living variously in ignorance, the immature think: 'We have done what is to be done.' But the ritualists, through attachment, do not understand, and when their merit is exhausted they fall away, broken.
Direct literal rendering preserving Sanskrit philosophical terminology.

Simple explanation
Editorial explanation, not scripture
Modern reflection
Editorial reflection, not scripture

A modern parallel offered for reflection. It is not part of the scripture, and it has not been checked against the original sources it may allude to.
