In sleep, all the senses withdraw into the mind as the sun's rays fold back into the disk at sunset. The body lies still — none of its perceptual or motor functions are active. "He sleeps" is what we say of this state.

He said to him: "O Gārgya, as all the rays of the setting sun gather into the orb of light, and as they spread out again at sunrise, so all this is unified in the supreme deva, the mind. Then this person does not hear, see, smell, taste, touch, speak, take, enjoy, eliminate, or move. He is said to sleep."

Simple explanation

Editorial explanation, not scripture

Modern reflection

Editorial reflection, not scripture

A modern parallel offered for reflection. It is not part of the scripture, and it has not been checked against the original sources it may allude to.
