Even while senses sleep, the prāṇas are awake — three Vedic sacrificial fires within. Apāna keeps elimination steady (the household fire); Vyāna circulates (the southern fire); Prāṇa proper carries breath (the sacrificial fire). The body is a yajña that does not pause.

But the prāṇa-fires are awake in this body-city. Apāna is the gārhapatya (household fire); Vyāna is the anvāhāryapacana (southern fire). And since the prāṇa is "led forth" (pra-nī) from the gārhapatya, it is the āhavanīya (sacrificial fire).

Simple explanation
Editorial explanation, not scripture
Modern reflection
Editorial reflection, not scripture

A modern parallel offered for reflection. It is not part of the scripture, and it has not been checked against the original sources it may allude to.
