Who is speaking?
Krishna
Who is listening?
Arjuna
What is happening?
Arjuna has asked how to recognize a person whose discernment is firmly established in divine consciousness.
What is being answered?
What is the foundational internal state of a person of steady wisdom?

Before this verse

  1. Krishna concludes his exposition of Buddhi Yoga and freeing oneself from scriptural rites (2.49–2.53).
  2. Arjuna asks the famous fourfold question: What are the marks of a Sthitaprajna, how do they speak, sit, and walk? (2.54).

This verse

  1. Krishna answers the first question: abandoning all mental desires and content in the Self alone (2.55).

After this verse

  1. Krishna describes emotional equanimity across sorrow and joy (2.56).
  2. Krishna uses the turtle metaphor to describe withdrawing the senses (2.58).

Simple explanation

When one renounces all desires originating in the mind and is satisfied in the Self alone, one is called steady in wisdom.

Simple meaning

Simple explanation

In response to Arjuna’s question about the nature of an enlightened sage, Krishna defines steady wisdom (sthitaprajna). It begins with casting aside cravings and fantasies concocted by the restless mind. When an individual discovers complete, overflowing fulfillment within their own conscious being, they no longer look to external approval, acquisitions, or conditions to make them whole.

Teaching flow

Teaching flow in order. Arjuna’s Inquiry Arjuna asks for the observable characteristics of a person who has attained steady wisdom. Then: Relinquishing Mental Craving (Prajahāti Kāmān) Discarding the endless phantom cravings concocted by obsessive mental projection. Then: Inner Contentment (Ātmanyevātmanā Tuṣṭaḥ) Finding complete, self-sustaining fulfillment within the silence of the Self. Then: Steady Wisdom (Sthitaprajña) Wisdom becomes unwavering when it no longer wobbles under external winds.

Modern example · not scripture

Every satisfied material desire quickly generates three new cravings. Internal contentment stops this exhausting cycle.

Anchoring self-worth in your own conscious presence ends addiction to notifications, social standing, and praise.

A mind liberated from obsessive wanting has immense creative and intellectual stamina to serve and create.

A common first thought
“I will finally be at peace as soon as I acquire that object, title, or external approval.”
With this teaching
“I am already whole in my awareness; I act in the world from fullness rather than from deficit.”

Common misunderstanding

Some readers take it to mean

“Abandoning desire means living a dreary, ambitionless life with zero motivation or joy.”

A fuller reading

Renouncing selfish craving frees tremendous mental energy; you act with greater enthusiasm, mastery, and joy because your inner peace is never on the line.

  • Not: "Having no ambitions, goals, or creative drive"

The Inner Wellspring Pause · 1 minute

When you feel a sudden urge to buy something unnecessary or check your phone for validation today, take 3 deep breaths and repeat: "In this moment, I am already complete; nothing external is required for my peace."

Pause and think

What external circumstance or possession are you convinced you must attain before you can finally permit yourself to be peaceful?

Teaching illustrated: When one renounces all desires originating in the mind and is satisfied in the Self alone, one is called steady in wisdom.

Student life
Feeling constantly restless, checking phone notifications every three minutes while trying to study.
The compulsive itch for digital dopamine is a mental craving. When you sit quietly, take three deep breaths, and find contentment in the present study session, your focus deepens effortlessly.
Professional life
Feeling chronic dissatisfaction despite promotions, constantly eyeing colleagues’ titles, salaries, and perks.
The hedonic treadmill has no finish line. Real professional freedom begins when your baseline contentment is rooted within, freeing you to work with excellence rather than chronic insecurity.
Creative work
Feeling creatively blocked because you are trying to anticipate what audience or algorithm trends will reward next.
Creating from a desire for applause produces hollow art. When you are content in your own inner truth, your work discovers authentic depth and original voice.
Family responsibility
Comparing your home, vehicle, or lifestyle with affluent relatives and feeling resentment at domestic simplicity.
Outer possessions cannot fill an inner void. Gratitude and contentment in the simple reality of your home bring richer joy than a lifetime of envious striving.
